You can't really expect Gerry Adams to welcome the the Queen's visit. He would be criticised if he did, but he did mellow a bit later and say that "Mrs Windsor can go where she wants". I am pleased about the visit because when I was growing up in England there was never any acknowledgement by the British of their history in Ireland. It was like it was taboo, and that was a thing that made it more difficult to forgive. It's good to get things acknowledged - much more healthy for relationships.

Is there anyone alive that remembers Ireland being part of the UK? I think the British PM should this week say sorry for Ireland pre1916,in much the same way that Thatcher did to the eastern block countries that helped us in WW2 but we let them be ruled by the soviets for 40 years. Once this is done perhaps we can start to put the past behind us.

I can't really see the Welsh leaving the union/England. They have very close bonds with the English, however they could probably manage to be independent if they wanted to.

I had family that were in the IRA, who have since changed their view and opinions. The economic crisis in the Republic has put nationalists off a United Ireland. I am well aware of the peace walls in Northern Ireland and I know a lot about the History, having studied it in depth and getting top grades in the subject. If you have not met any Catholics who favour the Union with Britain, you are not looking hard enough.

@hexcane Dublin and thus the Republic is totally independent. The North of Ireland does not fall under the Republic's jurisdiction so it makes no difference what a referendum of that sort would make. As for the Native American issue you raise you can also include Dutch, German, Anglo Saxon, Scotttsh, Welsh, French.... I could go on.

Please forgive my ignorance but can someone explain to me why he refers to the 'english' queen, as opposed to the 'british' queen? Does he not recognise Scotland or Wales as part of the UK?
@cephalopod7300
@cephalopod7300 3 жыл бұрын
It's part of a historically dubious narrative that insinuates Scotland and Wales are somehow colonies of England instead of just being part of a union of nations alongside England. Adams is not a fan of the UK and therefore keen to undermine its legitimacy. There is more nuance here, because this narrative isn't TOTALLY dubious, but this is KZfaq and I'm replying to a nine year old comment so that'll do for now.

@oiso94 He knows which Queen the interviewer meant, he was just trying to get a cheap dig in. She's referred to as "The Queen" in most of the English speaking world. No disrespect to the other royal families in the world, but they're not as well known, so people don't feel the need to call her the Queen of England or the Queen of Britain, as people know who'd being referred to.

Actually, he was. Great Britain and the United Kingdom are two separate entities. GB is the island with 3 countries on it (Scotland, England and Wales) whereas the UK is the political state of 4 countries (Scotland, England, Wales and N.Ireland). James VI of Scotland became James I of England however "James VI of Scotland and I of England" was a bloody long title so he named the island Great Britain and thus he became "James I of Great Britain". The countries were independent for 104yrs.

William Campbell ah but you Wrong. northern Ireland is Not a country. It has No flag and it has No anthem. IRELAND & SCOTLAND & WALES do. Soon Scotland will be on it's own INDEPENDENCE from a tyrant. The vote was rigged something englanders have expericence of doing to others. Example 1 a video here on Y.T. shows a woman counting the voting papers putting Yes votes into the no pile. Cheaters. Next time the S. N.P. ( Scottish NATIONAL Party ) will have more and more support. england can not stop SCOTLAND going. Alba Abù

I know what the difference between the GB and UK are LOL :)..I am going to say you are correct here with some caveates. Great Britain was a much earlier term used for the island to distinguish it from Brtianny and gets official mention neasrly 2 centuries before James VI (note he was king of Scots, not Scotland). He did indeed style himself King of GB etc., but never "James I of GB", it was term dropped by his sucessors until the Union. So you are right by James' decision to use it regardless.

You're saying it always has been? Point taken. My flippant use of 'crazies' obviously got you. Both sides have their reasons but I don't think it's controversial to say that people who must live in the same place who raise arms to solve a fundamental ideological disagreement are crazy. ROI was in a sticky spot and will continue to be till around 2014 (depending on the Eurozone) but its no where near Greece. Irelands National debt is 200 billion. The UK's national debt is 4.1 Trillion. Now, whos more likey to go like Greece? Thats why NI must leave the UK and rejoin the Irish Republic. And BTW, just because the UK has a large GDP doesnt mean that will benefit Northern Ireland, the english will put the english, scottish and welsh before the Irish.

Because the Vast majority of Irish Republicans, including myself, would rather be ruled from London than be part of an independent Ulster. An Independent Northern Ireland cannot exist anyway due to economic reasons, thats already been stated, even the UDA, who proposed such an idea said that in economic terms, for the state to survive an economic policy called "Distrubutism" would have to be enforced. NI can only survive by being part of the UK or the Irish republic.

Northern Ireland, for example, 80% of people are employed by the state. Thats why most english people often are annoyed that NI is still part of the UK, its being carried by the english taxpayer. It was different decades ago in the late 1800's and early 1900's, Belfast was a powerhouse of shipbuilding, rope making, etc it MADE the british goverment money, now it costs the british money, Billions to just police the place alone.

It statedd the first thing its going to do is cut the public secter MASSIVELY, it will not pay to employ people. To make jobs for the people, its going to move the head quarters of many of its Technologly corporations North to provide thousands of jobs for people, made by the private secter. Due to the republics low corporation tax, thousands of companies are based in the Irish Republic which provide jobs

I've also met other Catholic families from Northern Ireland who have shown support for NI remaining in the UK. I'm also Catholic and raised in an Irish Catholic community in England. It would cost too much money to have a referendum on something that is going to give a clear answer. It's pointless.

@1994breeno7 ye ken guiness is just an English-style beer (a stout) made in Ireland? Admittedly it's been made in Ireland for a long time. If you want to have a Gaelic drink, then whiskey's the answer. Of course there must have been traditional Gaelic beers, seeing as whiskey is in a way just distilled beer but without the hops, but I've never heard of anyone today making such a beer. The 'republican' Plunkett and Pearse were considering having Prince Joachim of Germany as King of Ireland Bit ironic that this was supposedly anti-British, given that the British royal house was not called Windsor, but Saxe Coburg Gotha If it were a British Republic that still had jurisdiction over the Six Counties, would you oppose a visit by its President to Dublin? Sinn Féin MPs at Westminister still wouldn't take their seats, because they would have to take an oath to a British Republic!

In my experience it was the English themselves that pissed and moaned about immigrants whilst the large majority of them that were on the dole were white English yokels who had no interest in working.
