In this video I go through how to diagnose and fix an outboard that isn't peeing any water out the tell-tale. We go through checking for blocks in the tube and outlet nozzle, removing the thermostat to see if water is reaching the block and then removing the gearbox to check the water pump impeller, transfer pipe and inlet grates.

I was buying a 1976 Era Merc and the seller was embarrassed when the telltale showed no water, explaining that the impeller was replaced. Lucky I had seen this video and we soon had the plug cleared. I bought the motor and now working on cables with the help of your videos. Thank you for being a thoughtful resource, and greetings from Lake Superior.

Super helpful. All your videos are. I inherited my father's boat with a Suzuki DF50 that sat neglected for maybe 5 years with bad gas. After changing the fuel pump, Fuel Pressure Regulator, and cleaning the inside of the VST spotless, (changed pretty much the entire fuel system) and new impeller and oil I was excited to have a working engine but there was no water in the telltale. I thought I botched the impeller install, but I watched this video before disassembling the lower unit and had the confidence to pull the water hoses to diagnose where it was blocked. I saw water coming from the engine block, whew. I stuck my finger in the telltale and some water dribbled out, I stuck it in again and more water came out, a third time and it pissed like a racing horse. If I did not watch this video I would have pulled the lower unit and probably done a lot of damage. All your videos have been super helpful for me to learn. I take the boat out for the first time tomorrow.

I’m working on a 1987 Yamaha 60HP at the moment. Knew a bit about car engines but nothing about outboards. Bought this engine for £45 here in the UK. That’s pennies for an outboard, however, you get what you pay for! I’ve learnt everything for this channel Stu. Bought a used carb linkage and airbox as the engine was missing those. Checked compression, learnt that here. Been through the electrical system, learnt that here. Going to tackle a service/clean of the forward controls, yes, learnt here! Fitted a new fuel pump after seeing that mine was shot, another of your videos 👍🏻. Awaiting a new fuel line to arrive which will mean I can attempt to start the motor. If it starts and runs then I’ll replace the water pump and the gearbox oil and sell it! As I’ve not done the cleaning of the forward control I’ve not ran power through the motor’s loom yet so fingers crossed for a working tilt motor etc. Haowever, I’ve watched your video on that too. After watching your videos, I’ve broken each system down and learnt about them. I still don’t claim to know heaps about outboards, but I can now take tools to it and feel confident in what I’m doing. When I get stuck I seek advice to avoid costly mistakes. Many have said it before but thank you very much for the simplistic approach to passing on your vast knowledge to us all. Thanks mate. 👍🏻

A boat set up we are thinking about is a 14 or 16 ft jon boat {aluminum}. Don"t really know what type of motor to try for. Tiller, 2 stroke, 4 stroke, honda, yamaha, evinrude etc.. All modern outboards are pretty good to be honest, so I would chose the brand mostly on which dealers are closest to you and best able to support you after purchase. I personally prefer four stroke motors to two strokes but whether you go tiller or forward controls really depends on your budget and how you want to use the boat.

Thank you for your excellent videos. You have helped me to do things which I did not know how to do without your instruction. Adjusting my valves, carbs,etc. Everything has come out superb. But, I currently do have a problem with my 2006 50hp Honda 4 stroke. I have moved to a colder climate (Idaho). I am actually away from home working the vast majority of the time, so I can't work on it whenever I want. Last fall, I put the boat away for the winter; I do recall that my last cruise I did go through some water right before putting it on the trailer that had a lot of debri. I don't know for sure if that caused the problem, but maybe. About a month ago, on a warmer (non-frozen) day, I pulled the boat out of the garage. I put earmuffs on it; the water pressure was not tremendous, but i thought it would be sufficient. Previous to this, I do not believe I had used earmuffs on this boat; we had moved, and I no longer had the tank to submerge the lower end before starting. The water was not pumping out; I foolishly burned up my impellor as well as melting the upper and lower pump housing. I should add that I have put in a new impellor in this boat myself (after watching your video) a couple of times previously with no problems. I have a very wimpy air pump, but I thought I did feel air coming out the thermostat hole when blowing from the tube from the impellor housing. I ordered parts from boats.net. I replaced everything, including new water seals in the lower housing, thermostat, etc. I thought everything was as good as new. I repeated the same scenario as above, and burned up the impellor and housing even worse this time. It was after this second time that I wondered if I had gotten pickup from the earmuffs. I am currently working a couple of thousand miles away (screw the plandemic). I have again ordered all the parts. I will go home for a 1 day visit in a couple of weeks. What should I do? Thanks again, your videos are great!
@woelbier
@woelbier 9 ай бұрын
I hope you solved the problem after two years. My first guess would have been too little water pressure from the earmuffs. The next step in my mind would have been to remove the lower unit, set up the earmuffs and spin the driveshaft manually. If water comes out of the pump housing, you already have a big win. So what was it?
@gabell727
@gabell727 9 ай бұрын
Oh yes, I fixed this right away. I no longer use earmuffs on this engine. The engine runs great, but I will not use earmuffs on it again! You are correct, it was the earmuffs. I had the parts ordered right away, and fixed everything asap. I don't know, or care why the earmuffs did not work, but I am done with them!@@woelbier

Thanks for the video, it was a helpful guide to troubleshoot with. I was having problems with my tell-tale and traced it to the plastic pipe thread to hose connector fitting. Someone sheared the fitting and tried to glue it back on, but the epoxy/glue blocked the hole as well. Thanks for the info. My Yahama isn't either pumping or the hose is plugged at spring startup. I pulled the foot thinking it may be the Impeller but, it looked ok. I had a spare so replaced it anyway, still no water discharge. I'm hoping the small hose is plugged as you showed. While examining the pump I noticed the Plastic Housing had some chips missing where the Shaft exits it. It appears to have gotten very hot sometime in its past. Dangar, so I disassembled the outdrive again and found the impeller was installed properly. I ran the hose through the flush out hose and water came out of the tube that attaches to the water pump. This showed me all was clear. Then I attached the muffs to the disassembled outdrive and watched to see if water came up the orifice to the water pump. I noted that it barely came up to the orifice. Even as I turned up the hose pressure the water would not come rise but simply spurted out the side of the muffs. So I clamped down the pressure on the muffs and low and behold water came out the orifice. Did the re-assemble and dropped the outboard into the tube of water and all was fine. Thanks again. Felling much more confident as I've now dis and re-assembled the lower unit 6 times. I think I'll have a Scotch.
@DangarMarine
@DangarMarine 8 жыл бұрын
+Terry Brothers Sounds like that scotch is well earned. There is no doubt that having seen something several times gives you a lot of confidence. It is also an import point about the muffs. There is a style that sends water to both sides when is a little bit better, but the only real test is having the boat in the water. Happy boating!

Hi Stu many years ago I was a marine diesel fitter (1976) it was the best job I ever had seeing your fault finding with the cooling water on the outboard motor you was working on the impeller is similar to a jabsco pump the water pressure got less as the pump wore out I used to replace all the components inside the pump, impeller, wear plate and end cover, clean out the oilcooler and sea cock then the water cooler for the engine then everything would be normal nice water flow overboard

Instead of a wire to clear the hose , I use the spray tube off a spray can. Fits perfect threw the fitting and reaches farther without hurting the hose.

Good tip. It's also been suggested to use whipper snipper cord which is another good idea.

Mean Rats I have been using weed wacker line instead of heavy fishing line...much cheaper and safe. I am having a problem where I have something lodged in the T fitting where the in and out lines for the tell tale are located. I don't know how to get it out....any ideas? If I leave a piece of weed wacker line lodged in the hole pushing the debris the water flows..I get that the tell tale not flowing is fine as long as your water pump is working...but I like having it as a primary safety feature prior to overheating.

In this video you were mistaken, what have been calling the "tell tale" is actually called the piss hole, at least that's what we call it in North Carolina

Dangar Marine, thank you so much! Your calm, common sense instructions are second to none. I always seem to end up watching your excellent videos whenever I'm having outboard woes.. an earlier video you did on carburettor cleaning was very useful and now I am having exactly the issue above. An old but serviced Mariner 20hp from 1998 which has been in the garage for a couple of years that starts but cuts out and the tell-tale isn't working. I'm going to go through step by step and check each potential blockage as you suggest. I hope it's just a bit of dirt in the hose!

Thanks for the insight. I just purchased a 1965- 35 hp mercury that was last licensed in 1989 yep 30-year-old impeller. I have it running but not a drop at the telltale. I did a quick poke in the telltale and it's clear. I will be getting an impeller next step.

I'm glad you mentioned that some outboards don't squirt that hard - I was beginning to worry about my 93 Evinrude VRO 70 HP. I had a mud wasp nest in the end, and after cleaning it didn't squirt very hard. It was constant and upon running appears to be fine. I had forgotten to stick a piece of weed whacker line in it on storage, the bees don't like if the hole isn't perfectly clear and don't bother with the hole if something is in it! (at least so far!)

thank you for making this video. at first I thought my impeller went bad. but after watching this video, I found out my tube had debris in it as well as the little spout the water comes out from. now the motor has free flowing water coming out of it.

Thanks! My wife and I drove an hour plus to take a 17 mile river cruise. I ALWAYS make sure the motor is "peeing" before releasing it from the trailer. It didn't, I shut it down and drove the hour plus back home not knowing if it was a bad impeller or something of that nature. Watched your video after I got home, removed the hose on my Yamaha 115 and sure enough a wasp had laid eggs up in the tell tale tube. All good now, and I'll be sure from now on I include the things I need for a fix whenever I take the boat out. Thanks again!

Thanks for your efforts. 3 times I pulled the boot after no water flow and on the 3rd time inspected the broken gasket under the silver plate. Gasket swapped, I now have water out the tell tale. With your bolts on the flywheel, you'd fit into the Territory without a problem. Cheers from the Outback.

You solved my question 2 minutes into the video. I was only getting a dribble out of my tell tale and worried that my water pump was not working. Two minute into your video I learned that I could put a paper clip in the tell tale hole and unblock it. I did that and I immediately got a steady stream of water flowing out rather than a dribble. Thanks!

Thanks for this video. I tore into my motor due failed tell tale, turns out there was no thermostat. As I continued to watch and tear into it further, the impeller was fine. I found there was some shotty mechanic work they used silicone adhesive to hold the impeller to the shaft instead of a impellar key. I got those parts coming in the mail. Thanks again for the video, you potentially saved my motor.

A great tip you gave to check the weep hole, it was a blocked nozzle, I reamed it out with a small drill as it's just so easy to get blocked. It saved a strip down. Thanks

This channel is great! I have a 1989 yamaha two stroke with 50hp jet. It clogs often because I run through shallow water frequently and suck up debris. I hav adapted a 60ml medical syringe with a tube to push water backwards into the telltale spout on the powerhead. It cleans it out quickly and has kept me from overheating quite a few times. Easy light weight tool that always stays on the boat.
