He certainly borrowed from it, but changed the arrangements, tempo, some words to turn rhythm and blues into rock and roll. Before July 5,1954 when Elvis, Scotty and Bill recorded That's All right at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, there wasn't even a branch of music yet called rock and roll. He combined country, rhythm and blues, white gospel, black gospel to create rock and roll. John Lennon said before Elvis, there was nothing. Before Elvis recording his version of black artist's songs, making them popular, black artists music couldn't even get on main stream radio stations. Elvis changed all that. Little Richard said by Elvis performing his songs, it made them bigger and it made him bigger.

My mother was born in 44. She moved from Kentucky to Cleveland to watch her nieces while their parents worked. For some fun she took her little sister (my mom) to see elvis about 1958/1959. He wasn't kissing women back then - but he picked mom out of the audience and had her come up on stage and he kissed her. Mom passed in 96 - but for the longest time elvis was our livingroom photo. She kissed him again 1976 - what a way to say hello & goodbye. I had hearing issues growing up (still do - a lot of infections). Mom would put on elvis to see if my hearing was returning. What she didn't know is i felt the music and would know where he was in the song. I'd be lying there in pain but wording elvis songs. When my daughter was born she about turn her head exorcist style to find his voice if she heard him. She's almost 30 now and she's had love me tender lyrics tattooed on her arm for over 10 years. Elvis continues in our family ❤🎶🎙

Love your enthusiasm for Elvis! My mother saw Elvis in concert 1970, and his energy, the incredible vocal range of his voice, his stage presence - the audience was mesmerized, especially the women. My mother was on such a "natural high" after seeing Elvis...that lasted about 2 days...and she said Elvis was THE BEST, period. You can't imagine the level of excitement, holding that concert ticket, finding your seat ... Then seeing and hearing Elvis. I'm thrilled you truly appreciate his phenomenal talent!

He actually had several songwriters. And of course he did covers. But he's a lot more than just a performer. He's a multi-instrumentalist as a musician, and of course he's an incredible singer, but he also does all his own Arrangements, including with that very large TCB band and the backing vocalists and all that. I think that's one thing that makes these things so good is that he was a genius at that stuff. He knew what he wanted for sure. And back then, that was pretty much the norm for this kind of music, most people did songs that other people wrote either for them or as covers.

It functioned as a prank against the sound guy who's back there with headphones on hearing that sharp blip of feedback, but then again, it was also to make sure that the sound guy stayed on his toes and was paying attention every single second. The song talks about a young woman named Annie down in the swamps in Louisiana, and the family is poor, her mom is in prison working on a chain gang, her dad has a bad back, and the brothers aren't good for anything except stealing watermelons out of his truck patch garden, which is a part of your garden that you load onto trucks and take to market to sell. So basically everything fell on her shoulders, and she was mean and vicious and carried a straight razor. In fact, she was so mean that she even made the alligators look tame. She would go down by the swamp and pick these greens, carry them home in a pole sack, and then make them for dinner and they called it Polk Salad. But you actually had to know what you were doing, because they are only edible for a certain part of their growth cycle, and at other parts of that cycle that can actually be toxic.

Polk salad is similar to turnip greens. Annie is the girl picking Polk salad in the song. Elvis was a great singer and entertainer. I was fortunate enough to see him in concert twice when I was a kid. It was an experience I’ll never forget. Never seen so many women cry and try and sneak in stage. Why i like Elvis is, Your never stuck with the same thing all the time. Most artist, Once you see one performence the next one is much the same. But not with Elvis. He's always different.

Aside from his great voice, his fantastic performances, his sense of humor, his generosity, the way he produced his music and led his band and singers, Elvis never took himself seriously. He disliked being called "The King" ( there was only one King to him ; the Lord) Elvis did take his performances seriously by giving his audience the best show he could give, each and every time. Also by making sure his female backup singers, The Sweet Inspirations, were always treated good wherever they performed, or he would not do the gig. You should watch Elvis and the Black Community video and watch the movie that just came out about his life. Th ese will give you a whole new level of understanding and respect for him. Yes, Whitney Houston's mother was one of his backup singers. Listen to the beginning of the song again, he tells you what polk salad is. It's a green that grows wild that people go out and pick. You just asked what that instrument is that you liked, and that is a guitar played through a wah-wah effects pedal (wah pedal for short); when you enable it, you work a pedal with your foot while you're playing the guitar and it makes the sound modulate like that. It was common in rock music at that time and Jimi Hendrix infamously used it frequently and it was kind of his signature sound. It's also a stereotype that it got used frequently in 70s porn music, laugh. Also notice that the backing vocalists have now started doing that boom chicka wow wow thing. But they're doing it really really fast and it's truly almost a tongue twister. But it's really cool. They get louder as it goes. Also, he's dancing but he's also essentially directing the band with his body movements and pushing them to go harder and faster.

The "Sweet Inspirations" are indeed in the background singing ...a great group of ladies for certain, especially Myrna, who cherished her time with Elvis.

Elvis was truly without a shadow of doubt on his own level. MJ got a lot of his moves from Elvis including that 'jamone' slang. Elvis would include it as part of his funked up rendition of Hound Dog in 1974 in which The Jackson 5 were in attendance and he introduced them to the audience.

Elvis would have had a TON more hit songs BUT his manager (Col. Parker) only allowed Elvis to sing songs that he (Parker) got monetary cuts from. Same for the jumpsuits, Parker cut a deal that he got money every time Elvis wore those jumpsuits! Parker held back Elvis and his talent until the day Elvis died!

My mom was born the same year as Elvis and she was a huge fan from the beginning and in 1967 my parents moved the family to Las Vegas for my dad's new job a few years later my mom wound up working at the international hotel where Elvis performed and when she was caught up or done for the night she would stand in the back of the showroom and watch him perform it was her dream come true. POLK salad...Louisiana girl here. Used to ride my horse in the Polk Salad festival in Blanchard Louisiana every year back in the late 70's. It's just like Elvis sings, it grows wild in Louisiana and a good cook would turn it into a mess of greens that's delicious. It was considered very very poor folk food. And of course Elvis would know about it as he grew up so poor.

So hear goes, he is talking about the mother of girl, a mean woman, sharp as a razor, so he makes the sound with the mic (called onomatopeic sound), then with his hand he does the cut troath sign to show the razor sharp mean charcter of Annie's mom. None of the folks making reaction videos to the sogn understrood the lyrics or WHY he made that sound effect, I was really taken aback how NONE of the folks got it, people either thought if was funny, or they were somehow shocked.

The song was about a poor girl from the other side of the tracks who routinely picked a weed called “poke” and prepared it for supper. Luckily for Annie, she knew what to do with the poke, because the actual plant can be fatal if not cooked properly or if picked at the wrong time

It was common back then to have song writers working for you. For example, Frank Sinatra wrote 3 or 4 songs at the start of his career, but once he became well-known, he took on people who wrote songs for a living. Dean Martin Never wrote a song, but he was a big name. So people who disparagingly say Elvis never wrote his own songs, clearly don’t know that neither did most big name singers at that time, & Elvis was the biggest of them all. A great many singers were very happy if Elvis did a cover of a song of theirs, because Elvis’ records were huge sellers & those singers got royalties off every record sold. Elvis began his career at the age of 18 & within a short space of time was virtually a mega-star. At his very first official appearance on stage, as an 18 year old, he had girls screaming crazily at him, because he was like no other singer they had ever seen before ….. he actually moved his legs as he sang, rather than stand still as all other white singers did back then. Elvis was born in 1935, into a very poor family, & he grew up in a black community, so as a child he was influenced by gospel music, which remained his passion until he died at the age of 42 in 1977. So although he was white, his childhood roots were black & he had a strong affinity with the black community. Elvis was a trend-setter & considered highly dangerous by the authorities who strictly enforced segregation. He didn’t read music, but taught himself guitar & piano, & he could play drums tolerably well. And he was deeply spiritual.

I live in Mississippi and I love Polk salad. It grows wild, pick it wash it, then boil until tender, drain all water off, put a little cooking oil in skillet then scrambled 5 or 6 eggs in it, it's delicious. Season like scrambled eggs

Back in the 60’s and 70’s the music mostly told stories and brought to light issues that had been ignored. A great storyteller is Harry Chaplin. I call him mental health music. Billy Joel makes those days visible as you listen. He makes visible the days of yesteryear. He was pertinent then and he’s pertinent today.

The song title is Polk Salad Annie but the plant is pokeweed. You can eat it but you have to prepare it correctly, otherwise it can make you sick. Lots of poor people used to eat pokeweed in earlier times.
