Agree! And a different "looking stupid" than Jordan, as MJ would torch everybody and they would just shake their head and think "nothing I can do against Mike", but with Larry, I bet it was more like "how the did I let Larry do that to me...again?"

When Larry came back after hitting his face on the floor, he played the rest of the game with a fractured right cheekbone and a concussion, but Larry had the heart of a lion and would not let his team lose if he could do anything at all about it. Youve only scratched the surface on Larry, theres SO much more - they way he would trash talk, telling the opposing players where and how he was going to score on them - and then DO IT virtually every time. His passing was something else, his assists, and he did most of this the last part of his career with a really bad back. The videos all tell the stories and theres a lot of stories which are even told by other hall of famers so you can believe every word of it. Larry Bird is a bonafide LEGEND and one of the top GOATS in NBA history

It always amazes me to see young guys reviewing Larry Bird. Many people forget that when Bird came into the league they didn't think he could make it in the NBA. Magic's friends would ask him if Larry was really that good. Magic has said that Larry was the only player he feared. Pat Riley said if the game was on the line he'd want Jordan to take the shot but if his life were on the line he would want Larry to take the shot!

Larry Legend is different. He would tell the play to the other team and dare them to stop him. The more clutch the more he did it, he played with their mind. Also Larry was ALWAYS in the right spot at the right time doing the right thing. He would pass a ball where nobody was and someone would miraculously show up. People showed up for games because they saw plays that look impossible all the time. That is why they say Magic and Larry saved the NBA. The old school play was rough and tough not like today and players stayed with a team for a long time. Thanks for a fun moment looking back in time.

When looking at the all-time greats describing Larry as slow and unathletic, you have to understand the context. He was a contender for being the best player in the league when he was playing, and compared to all the others in that competition, he absolutely was slow and unathletic. Think about Shaq, for example. By normal standards, Shaq is very much a skillful player and good shooter. However, if you imagine Shaq's skill in the body of the average NBA player, he would have been nowhere near the dominating force he was. He probably would have honestly been a below average player, because his skill could not have carried him to greatness on its own without his freakish power and athletic ability. Larry bird was that same idea, but reversed. He was not unathletic, but his athletic ability would not have carried him very far in the NBA if it were paired with an NBA average skill and intelligence.

"Why does basketball look so lit back then?" It WAS. I wish I was there too. I mean today's game is just more corporate, and it ain't even on the players really, it's the agents and the managers and the TV producers. A player of top tier talent doesn't get rewarded for being committed 100% to that competitive purity. It's all worry about injuries, career longevity or "your brand". But back in the day, it was pure. And it's a vintage nobody makes anymore. It's not that the quality was so much better, but it was pure in a raw sense. Unfiltered competition.

If he had a healthy career he wins 6-10 titles no question he was so dominant. And as for in today's nba if u put him on a team like the mavs and swap him for Luka he'd average easily 40-15-10 it would be scary playing him on a team like that.

The back story to the Hawks game when Larry dropped 60+ is great from both teams. From the Celtics Kevin McHale had just broken Larry Bird's single game franchise scoring record just a few days prior to the Hawks game. Bird reclaimed his franchise record vs the Hawks. From the Hawks side it was post game when coach Mike Fratello was watching the tape he noticed the Hawks bench cheering for Bird. Fratello would fine the players seen celebrating including John Salley. Salley replied to coach Fratello by saying watching Bird play like that was well worth it. Fratello agreed with Salley and fined himself as well.

Larry was the ultimate trash talker and all those after him including Michael specifically Michael learned from Larry. There are so many great players from the ABA to the NBA merger that hardly ever get talked about anymore or looked at if you love the game go check out them guys and see the transition

Bird pretty much did everything in Basketball you could do on the court. 3 point contests, crazy passes, MVPs, impossible shooting, clutch plays, multiple championships, toughness through injury, 50-40-90 club (and 1 steal away from a quadruple-double if he didn't voluntarily sit out an entire 4th quarter) . I mean he was slow and had average defense but he just anticipated plays and out-thought his opponents that made those negatives better. I think Jordan may begrudgingly agree that Larry Bird on the other side of the court always gives a chance to win a game, even against him. And we all know how MJ demoralized pretty much everybody else he ever faced.

I love it when Larry does those Jedi master passes when someone passes him the ball and he doesn’t catch but instead he taps it and changes the ball’s trajectory in a split second. But the ball never slows down. Talk about hand eye coordination…. 🐐

it's not just larry's skills that made him great. it was also the era he played in. he was a great player in a league filled with great players. and almost all of them have horror stories about how good bird was and how much of a nightmare he was to play against. the mid 80s-late 90s was the most talent rich and competitive era of basketball and bird was at or near the top of that era.

Bird was a nightmare for the opposing team. There was no way to defend him. He had too many weapons in his arsenal. Do his passing re-edit video. Greatest passer.

Just as I think Jordan would have been close to Bird as a jump shooter, had he not been forced to shoot a lot of garbage shots early Bulls when they didn't have a team, I think Bird would have easily averaged 30+ in many seasons had he only been focusing on scoring. But I am glad he didn't we got so many highlights that didn't involve Larry himself always making the basket.

The first 3 point contest was the best, even though everybody mostly remembers the last round of the 3rd one. In the last round of the 1st contest he was in (and at the time nobody thought a bigger man had a chance at winning a 3 point contest), he hit like 11 in a row, and not even through the 3rd rack he had already won it, so then he started f**king around like banking in a 3 and trying to rainbow shots. I mean how intimidating is that?

Larry talked about how he had 600 moves he would use daily in his opponent’s. It was so hard to tell what he was going to do and he mentally wore you out. James worthy said he would rather guard MJ over Bird because bird you had to play the mental game to figure him out.

I'm lucky enough to say. I saw larry legend play his whole career. Bird is the most complete player to ever play. He was the smartest most clutch player to ever play the game. He is the best shooter that I have ever seen. He was an unbelievable passer. He rebounded better than most centers. He would d up on anybody. Played more than half of his career with a broken back and two bad feet. In My opinion, larry bird is the Goat. Just ask Jordan, Jordan was 0 for 6 in the playoffs versus bird. With two sweeps. Bird was the only player that jordan never beat in the playoffs. People always say bird was slow, bird couldn't jump. He didn't have to. He was always 3 steps ahead of everyone he played. Just imagine what he would have done if he was fast and could jump. They called him Basketball Jesus for a reason. Because he was the best!

Don't let Larry's slowness fool you. He was freakishly strong and what he lacked in physical ability, he made up for in hustle, work ethic and basketball IQ. He made a hobby out of humiliating guys. I saw them play in 1987, at the old Boston Garden, a gift for my 12th birthday, and it's still one of my best childhood memories. Growing up in the Boston area in the 80's, the Celtics/Lakers rivalry was EVERYTHING!

Not only could Larry shoot the ball, but he was absolutely a master at passing. To do what he did he had to always know exactly where everyone was on the court and that everyone was looking for a ridiculous pass at the last second. That's what made him almost impossible to guard. You had no idea what he was going to do. He'd go up like he was shooting, but pass instead. He looked like he was passing, but then he'd take the shot.
