No Your Alternator SHOULD NOT Be Oil Cooled! Celsior LS400 Valve Cover Gasket Fix

Turns out my Celsior had a pretty nasty leak from the valve covers that coated almost everything in the lower engine bay with a film of oil, and in the process it dripped down into the alternator for who knows how long. Who would've guessed oil cooled alternators are no good?
This is actually a fairly common leak for the Lexus LS400 and Toyota Celsior, but luckily it's a pretty easy and cheap fix, although it's a bit time consuming. In this video, we're tackling some of the boring stuff like the valve cover gasket replacement while wait on new parts to arrive.
The first drive and reaction to the all new OEM suspension that you've been waiting for is coming soon!

Nissan cars for ads/ racing normally use the number 23 because in Japanese, a 2 is pronounced 'ni' and a 3 is pronounced 'san'.

I recently picked up a 1990 ls400! starter died a couple weeks back and I've been working on it in my spare time. Too damn cold in ny to be working outside much. These videos are a great resource! Very informative, thank you for allowing us to learn from your efforts and mistakes! Maybe I'll add these valve covers to the "while you're in there" list.

@@JJinMotion my biggest fear is snapping a bolt or the gasket rolling over on itself and having to do it all over again!

Just an idea would an oil catch can help with leaky oil from rocker cover gaskets as it collect oil vapors

The two throttle plates in the throttle body are part of the traction control system. It was an option on the LS400 models in the US...I am assuming this Celsior has it. The inner throttle plate is the main one that is controlled by the accelerator pedal. The outer one always remains open during normal operation. The traction control system shuts the outer plate when it detects wheel slip to make the engine cut power.

Yup my sc400 has it and I just unplugged it. Don’t want it. I wonder if it obstructs any airflow

Check to make sure your power steering pump isn't leaking as well. The power steering pump is directly over the alternator and is the main reason why the alternators die prematurely. Its a known issue for the LS400 1UZ.

Why can't your alternator be oil cooled, makes perfect sense to an engineer...

Great video once again! Was there more info on your over-application of the FPV that I missed? Additionally, I cannot stress enough that you DO need to upgrade your wiring if you're going to upgrade your alternator with an additional 50 amps. You are risking starting a fire if the load/"demand" on the alternator becomes higher than the rated capacity of the wiring, which I shouldn't need to say is a major safety issue. Imagine trying to push an elephant through a door frame. The wire upgrade is very easy to do and I would be happy to walk you through it step by step when the time comes. I just did this a few months ago myself. I also have ten years of professional experience working with high energy electrical, mechanical and hydraulic systems.

More info on the FIPG issue in the next video! I ended up splitting this one into two videos because I had so much footage. Definitely keen to hear more about the wiring upgrade. Multiple forum threads I read said it's a drop in place upgrade. Can you send me more info? You could message me on IG: @jj.in.motion

Weird, usually with the Ls400 the power steering pump leaking is what kills the alternator.

Where did you source your gaskets from? Cheapest price for oem I've found is nearly $200 for the valve cover gasket, spark plug tube seals, and bolts/grommets. That's 25% under msrp, but still hard to stomach when rockauto has a kit with all that for $40. Don't even get me started on fuel injector o-rings😢

I got all those bits OEM Toyota from partsouq.com. Everything in this video as far as gaskets, bolts, etc was $206 with shipping. It's a lot more than rockauto but as you know I go OEM as much as possible, if not then OE. Plus these are all things I don't want to do more than once so I'll spend a bit more to ensure that's the case

Man im new to your channel been researching the 430s here in the uk, 400s would be rotted out by now due to our weather and salt on the roads in the winter. Im sick of bmw replaced 7 springs in various cars over the last 6 months from the m3,m2 and my daily e92 320i. what are these like as daily drivers as i do 40 miles a day to work and do really want a total guzzler dont mind if it the same as the Ms i had a v8 sc rangerrover sport and it was deadly on petrol. thats in advance for any advice

The LS400 / Celsior is in a totally different league than the 3 series BMW, I think. They just have different design principles when you compare them by things like ride comfort and driving dynamics. I think for any kind of spirited driving, most BMWs will beat the LS400 but if you're concerned with reliability and comfort, then the LS400/430 is the way to go. This Celsior is my daily right now and I love driving it. It's smooth, comfortable, and quiet. Exactly what I want from my daily. I hope to get an LS430 at some point in the future to see how it compares because from what I've heard, it's even better
