The writer and director behind The Squid and The Whale, Marriage Story and his new film, White Noise, talks about his career at the 2022 BFI London Film Festival, presented in partnership with American Express (5-16 October).
Since debuting at the 1995 New York Film Festival with the comedy drama Kicking and Screaming, Noah Baumbach has developed an instantly recognisable style and wit, often centring on East Coast elites and their challenging family dynamics. He received an Oscar nomination for his breakthrough The Squid and the Whale (2005), following it with such varied fare as Margot at the Wedding (2007), While We're Young (2014), The Meyerowitz Stories (2017) and Marriage Story (2019). He collaborated with actor-writer and Greenberg (2010) star Greta Gerwig on Frances Ha (2012) and Mistress America (2015).
His work has featured a wealth of distinguished actors, including Laura Dern, Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver, Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Nicole Kidman, Adam Sandler and Dustin Hoffman - each playing characters caught up in the knotty complexity of the characters, relationships and situations Baumbach creates.
