As a Canadian I knew right away what he meant, like that depressing season between October and the snow in December that just drags on and just feels like you're stuck in a constant in between and all your college friends are away till the Christmas break. I love this song so so much. Musically, one of my favorites. Lyrically, I can relate to the sentiments. The dad line is especially personal to me because, paired with the dad line in Catastrophize, it describes mine. Poetically, this song describes my relationship with the place I grew up in. I miss it desperately but I can't go back. The place I grew up in doesn't exist any more, I wouldn't want to go back even if I could afford it. It moved on, it grew without me. The people I loved moved out, forgot about me, and I'm too ashamed of how I've wasted my life to try to reconnect. I grew up in small town in Washington state and when there's light rain here, I think of it. I had a vacation planned to go back and visit for my birthday in early 2020, but Covid made me cancel. I still haven't been back I've been depressed for years, and I've made very few friends in the places I've lived. The past year or so I've been opening up and "piling something good on all the bad" but I still get hit hard with depression, and it's made it very hard to sustain relationships or find a career worth doing. There's more, but I think that illustrates why I love this song pretty well.
