Noah Lyles is one of the best sprinters in America and in the world right now, but this recent 4x400m performance is not living up to his abilities.

When Michael Johnson set the world record in the 4x400, he was in the same position - ahead by more than 4 seconds. However, instead of cruising to an easy win, he still pushed himself and ran the fastest leg of all time (42.9). Obviously lyles wasn’t there to set a WR, But running your hardest when you have a huge lead isn’t always a bad thing

It’s a race. How many 400s is he going to get to run this season? You can run 48 seconds in practice. Why not see what you can do?

@@normcmiller its early in the season, and he probably would rather not getting injured. if he was a 400 specialist i would agree, but he does 200m, why risk a injury on a meaningless race?

I think this was a bad take. 1) its early in the season, probably the first race of the season for most of the pros. 2) noah lyles doesn't run the 400/4x400 and probably hasnt done so since high school. 3)you're comparing him to people who DO run the 400/4x400 much more often, so of course their times would be better.

If Noah hadn’t said “he could easily break 43 seconds and even the world record if he wanted” he wouldn’t be getting criticized for such a slow split.

It's not early in the season for Noah he's run indoors. Also his capabilities shows he should be running a relay split of 46 easily with a running start. He went to run a 4x4 just to jog it, like what's the point in that...

@Rebelfochrist correct me if im wrong but when he ran indoors i believe he ran a couple of 60m races, which would help with his starts for the 100m and wouldnt be much help for the 400. Now if he was able to go faster he should have but at the same time this isnt his normal event and unless he was consistently running indoors for the entire season then yes it would still be early season since outdoors just started. And, as someone else pointed out, they were so far ahead anyway why over exert yourself when you're clearly goinf to win.

Noah is a sprinter, and the 400 is a sprint. When I was in college. I was a teammate of Dwight Stones. Our coach wanted him to run anchor on the mile relay.i ran the third leg. Dwight asked me to get him a cushion, which I did. Dwight is high jumper, so I understood my job. Had Noah been on third leg. Different result.

Do your research before posting a video. Josephus was a 200m and 400m combo sprinter in high school. He has been running 45 seconds in the 400m since high school.

I was here front Row at the race. Lyles is always super excited and hyped pre race but for this one he seemed irritated or nervous. He always talks about how he hates running the 400, so he probably didn’t exert himself

Lyles is a man on a mission and he is testing his limits rite now.I think we will see him be more definitive on his race choices as the season progresses .He is a talent to be wreck' n with.Don't know if anybody can touch him in the 200?

Much to do about nothing it's his first race running by himself the last leg in a race he doesn't run. The point of the race was to work on endurance for the 200 not break a world record.

Lot's of athletes run the 400 for conditioning, including Shelly Anne Frasier who is also a 100 meter sprinter. They do it every year to start the season and are not really trying to compete.

Learning experience. Pacing is weird when your reacclimate yourself to race speed of a relay 400 or the open quarter especially when you have open track like that in a smaller meet compared to what has resume says. It might as well been a intersquad meet. Give him a full season of both to really see how he does. Worst case scenario he’s a viable alternate for the reloaded 4x400.

It would be one thing if he was competing against someone and ran that time but he was by himself. I actually think he would be better at the 400 than the 100. And he should have ran first or second leg for the work

Just because he ran a 47 doesn’t mean he’s sick or anything… idk where you get that info from. If he is not a 400m runner, you expect him to run a 43 or 44? It doesn’t work like that. That’s jus t not his event.

400m runner or not. This says that Noah is currently not in a good place with his preparation. 25 secs to close says a lot. This is a great champion with competitive pride. He would definitely do more if he was capable of it. Maybe working back from minor injury. Long season ahead; it's not a big deal, but it is a little something. I know he is not please looking at this video and yes he pays attention to everything.

A 4x4 split by Noah doesn't foreshadow anything about the season. But that was just a bad performance by Lyles. Someone of his caliber should split 45 high easily in a relay since he had a running start. Otherwise what benefit does running a slow relay do...Nothing

He's a severe asthmatic. Running the 400m is NOT going to be a strong race for him without alot of endurance training and gradual finish speed training.

What do we learn from it? Nothing. He might be fit, he might not. He could have been tired. He could have been jogging. If I had to say, I'd suggest he was way in front, it was a run out to support the team , it's not his event and his coach said, if he was well in front, to run at 90% as a training run.
