The champions league is the single best gathering of footballing talent in the world and they're always called European champions not world champions, even though the european champions could stomp any other continental champions in the world. A world championship is title that's won not a self proclaimed one. Like City won the last champions league title and could stomp any other team in the world but they don't get the world championship title de-facto just because they have played against the best players in europe. That's the point, these teams call themselves world champions when not only are they not competing with the world, but they're crowning themselves world champions in sports nobody else cares about. World cup finals are watched by billions of people all over the world. The superbowl gets maybe 100m, NBA finals on average pull about a tenth of that. In pretty much every non-American sport, the "world champions" are actually competing against the world.
