The show leans into the day's political cycle with cutting edge analysis from DC insiders who can predict what is going to happen. If my grandpas were still alive, they would only be 3 to 4 years older than Chomsky is right now. This man has seen the Great Depression, Europe's descent into fascism, WWII, the Civil Rights Movement, all significant Women's Rights movements since the suffrage, Vietnam, Corea, the Cold War, the rise and decline of neoliberalism, the fall of the Soviet Union, 9/11 and the iraque war. And somehow, he still figured out to remain on the right side of history. If there ever was such a thing like a living legend, he'd be probably the closest to it.

@ I wouldn't call the Democratic corporatists to be classic neoliberals in the economic sense. At least not anymore since the bailouts 2008. I would actually state that to most of the populace, it has proven to fail on dealing with reality. Also please consider that US politics do not equal the rest of the world, the US is far right-wing to the rest of the world. I am German for instance, and our conservatives actually achieved to write a debt ceiling into the constitution back in the 2000s with the shameful help of social democrats. Both parties are back in power and started to ignore their own amendment amidst the Coronavirus crisis, something the 2008 crisis could not achieve.

It was awesome. He and his wife were sitting a few seats away from me and I couldn't believe my eyes when I noticed him. I addressed him as "Professor Chomsky" and he looked at me. I told him that I admired his work with linguistics and generative grammar. He was about to give a lecture at Harvard University and he asked me if I was a Harvard student (I'm not). I told him that I was just hanging out in Cambridge for the day. I shook his hand and asked him if I could take a picture with him. He was gracious enough to let me take a picture.

IF you cannot understand his voice in this interview (bad audio), then use the subtitles on KZfaq. Here is how: When you click on the link above, it takes you to the video. Before the video starts, click on the tiny "GEAR" icon for the video SETTINGS. This is shown on the bottom right margin of the video image. Look for the tiny wheel like GEAR icon. Click on that. Then, look at that sub menu and find SUBTITLES, click on that and choose ENGLISH (if that is what you want). When I do this, the subtitles show large (you can adjust size too) on my screen on the video. You can do this for MOST videos on KZfaq. Perhaps not all (I am not sure). I hope that helps you. :) Also, you can adjust the playback speed if you want. Look under that same GEAR (SETTINGS) icon menu, for PLAYBACK SPEED. I sometimes choose .75 speed to slow fast talkers down if I am taking notes.

@@jonm7888 How is it dumb? Chomsky says, in this interview, that Trump is more dangerous than Biden, and that Biden can be pressured into doing what we want. That's pretty backwards. Trump hasn't started any wars (and he tried to end one, but the Democrats blocked him). He stopped the health insurance mandate. He even backed off a bit on his anti-mask position. Biden wants to start more wars, bring back ObamaCare in full, and pass laws that force everyone to wear a mask and do whatever he thinks people should do. Biden is obviously the more dangerous candidate. Trump isn't perfect, not by a long shot, and I'm certainly not voting for Trump, but Chomsky isn't seeing things clearly if he thinks Biden is the better option.

It can be Trump which 100% means goodbye to democracy and any good of averting catastrophic climate chaos, or it's Biden, who is at least accepts democracy is a good thing and that climate catastrophe is something to be avoided. When FDR got into power, he didn't immediately enact the New Deal. It was way to politically hard. He told the socialists and und unions "Get in the streets and make me do it." Even if we had Bernie as President, the amount of change we need to avoid disaster would demand the kind of public protest and civil disobedience that we have just glimpsed with BLM, but for weeks and weeks and weeks. Nothing is going to be easy. But at least with Biden there is more than 0% chance of success.

If I might add Michael Hudson, I think he's pretty great, especially in backing up the whole historical materialism thing with interesting anthropology along with a recontextualization of religion as a sort of foundation for economic stability that has been, surprise, distorted by the ruling class a tool of social control (similar to Adorno and Horkheimer's dialectic of enlightenment) ie robbed of any of its valuable progressive essence leaving only a literal "prosperity gospel" interpretation/enforcement of the current social hierarchy. Basically just backing up the base/superstructure conception from Marxism with further supporting evidence. Also David Harvey of course.

"One of the most cited public intellectuals of our time, professor emeritus at MIT, historian, author, political activist, scholar, Noam Chomsky. Great to have you, professor, so great to speak with you." (0:20) DR. NOAM CHOMSKY: "Glad to be with you." KRYSTAL BALL: "So, there's so many things that we could talk about. But I was wondering if you could start by putting this moment we are living through in a little bit of context. "I mean we have this unbelievable pandemic. We have racial unrest and uprisings across the country. We have a Great Depression. We have the existential threat of climate change, and so many things that we are living through right now. "How does this compare to other things, that you have lived through, that you've studied? "Help us put this into context." (c. 0:54) DR. NOAM CHOMSKY: "This is a unique moment in history, in human history, not just my lifetime. "We're living at a point of confluence of severe crises. There's another one, that you didn't mention---equally severe---the increasing threat of terminal nuclear war. "So, nuclear war, destruction of the environment, a raging pandemic (and others likely to come, unless we prepare for them); innumerable problems internal to the country. "There's never been a moment in human history when such a confluence of crises emerged. And the decisions about them have to be made very soon. They cannot be delayed. (c.1:47) "Nuclear war could break out at anytime. We've livedunder the shadow of the Cold War for 75 years. (c. 1:57) [...] "Within the next decade or so, we will decide whether our grandchildren, your grandchildren, will have a world in which humans can survive." KRYSTAL BALL: (c. 15:33) "Professor, I wanted to ask you about the future of the American left [i.e. the political grouping of Americans on the left side of the single-axis left-right political spectrum model]. "Obviously, many were demoralised by Bernie Sanders' second loss this time around. And there's this open debate about what he right path is forward. "Do you try again to have this sort of political revolution from within the Democratic Party to kick out the neoliberals? Do you start an entirely new third party? [Do you fight for ranked-choice voting and/or proportional representation in congress?] There's a new effort underway, with the People's Party, to start something new, a working-class focus, from scratch. "Which way do you think is the most likely to succeed? And, then, do you think that it's possible to influence and move a Biden administration, if he does, in fact, win the presidency?" (c. 16:16) DR. NOAM CHOMSKY: "All we can say is that, assuming he's elected, it'd better be possible, or else we're in serious trouble. "But, yes, I think it is possible. [...]

When determining the fate of a system by assessing the amount of entropy occurring within it, and you consider the amount of entropy occurring with the planet, and with the human condition, for example the confluence of events described, in addition to a well-established system reverting to political and economic regression, including contributing to the Anthropocene, 6th mass biodiversity extinction, and climate catastrophe, and the solution is to remove a malignancy that achieved the highest office in the land, and to use nonviolence to shift another verifiable malignancy a little bit to the left, and hope that’s enough to jumpstart an entire sequence of events, which if they each succeed, might barely forestall the worst consequences of inertias already set in motion, it’s time to rethink the human condition at the most causal level of reductionism possible, objectify whatever toxic biological determinism exists, and move in the distinctly opposite direction as fast as possible.

Noam Chomski is a linguist. Maybe ask a political scientist whether we are a failed state. A failed state is when the govt has completely collapsed. It's when there is no govt. He can speak to our condition, but the classification has a definition. There is something worse than being ruled by an authoritarian regime. It's a failed state. There is much romanticizing about a rightwing utopia without a govt. They romanticize a failed state, and it's so horrible that it caused Machiavelli to figure out how the only kind of govt that had ever existed (until 250 years ago) worked in order to prevent that from happening again. Democracies are the only govts that must provide for the welfare of the citizenry. Losing your democracy isn't a failed state. This is simply a result of people voting their democracy away and choosing authoritarian rule. If you want a democracy, then fight for it.

Here, let me help you, ALL OF THE ECONOMIC THEORIES EITHER REQUIRE AN AUTHORITARIAN GOVT or DESTROYS DEMOCRACY TO BUILD AN AUTHORITARIAN GOVT. Everything in Econ is basically rightist. Democracy is leftist. Nothing you learn in Econ will help to build a democracy, and nothing from Econ applies.

I'm a historian like Noam Too, but I disagree with Noam on this topic. The corona-and economic crisis aren't necasairy leadership-crisis, but a policy-made crisis. Noam wants to concentrate on Trump, but the problem is far bigger then Trump. Trump is actually an outcome instead of a cause and with Biden we have also a person who actually agrees on Trumps economic policies and only moved a little bit because he wants to win the elections. If he was president instead of Trump we would be probably in the almost exact same position. We can put the blame on Trump, but what about the reasons someone like Trump could become president, let alone still has a chance to get a second term? In a good-working democracy candidates would have done more for voters and we would have an ecomical functional right and left spectrum like also many other western countries in for example Europe have. If donor-choices can have such a hugh impact on who we can choose, we have to ask ourselves if we actually live in a democracy or an olichargy disguised as a democracy in wich both main-party candidates who actually have a chance to run are under controll of wallstreet and countries like Saudi Arabia, Israel and all other countries who can give money to our candidates. We haven't Trump because he is such a good candidates, but because the other candidates that are chosen by donors are actually even worse for common lower and middle income voters. In other countries we would call donor-activities corruption and the country even tried to prosecute a FIFA-boss for doing the same as presidential candidates have to do to have a big enough deposit to run effectively. This caused actually two parties that aren't distinct enough on economical policies and who try to mask that by focussing on personal issues and other non-policy baised distractions instead on economical policy-plan differences.

(eek throw some paragraphs in there.) i agree with you on the intermediate frame. but it IS the Republicans that shut down the CDC in china to "save money"/"small gubment"/"science pinheads". we have to LAND this airliner, we (they) can't just rip out the components in mid air for the benefit of Ayn Randian captains of the fossil fuel industry and war industry. if it were just the current imperial structure collapsing, fine, but like Prof. Noam says, the melting ice sheets are irreversible and have to be dealt with NOW. the Green New Deal (or as Pelosi and Biden, presumably, say the "Green Whatever") is the kind of step in this direction we need. but we're MUCH more likely to triage this collapse and survive to fight another day with a Biden option than with the system noise that is Trump.

So, being a historian, you enjoy reading. What do you think of books by conservatives and former Republican operatives that condemn today's Republican Party itself alone? Norman Orstein (a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute) and Thomas Mann (of the Brookings Institute) "It's worse than it looks" Geoffrey Kabaservice "Rule and Ruin: downfall of moderation and the destruction of the Republican Party from Eisenhower to the Tea Party" Stuart Stevens (long-time Republican operative, and the only here who is a member of the Lincoln Project) "It's all a lie: how the Republican Party became Donald Trump" Or, how about those authors who are not necessarily conservatives, but academics: Like Rick Perlman who written several books chronicling the Republican Party including "Reaganland" and "Nixonland" Steve Benen "The imposter: how Republicans quit governing and seized American politics"

@@barquerojuancarlos7253 I look to policies and who actually could influence them and many people and even scientist's are too political biased because they think they can contain the problems we are facing if we choose another candidate. They are subjectively looking to the outcome instead of looking to an underlying cause. It's like constantly mobbing a bathroom to make sure the water can't damage the rest of the house without repairing a leaking shower. If we have an honest look we see that donors actually choose for us what we are allowed to vote and media are telling us that we have to be proud we can choose between Dems and Reps. They are telling us everytime that now it's not the time to vote on for example a third party eventhough donors support both parties. This led eventually to the path of Trump and also to a path in wich the corona-virus and also the economic crisis hit us harder then it is hitting other strong economic countries. If we also look objectively we see Trump even didn't a bad job till the corona-virus hit us if we compaire him with other former-presidents. Not because he was that good, but because the system gave us presidents who couldn't do a better job because the system with donors prevents them to put voters first.

@@zaloo I think the real problem is that if enough of us tell beforehand we will vote on Biden (or Trump) anyway and aren't prepared to vote third party or on the other, both candidates don't have to do anything for us because they already have our unconditional support. It's the people who can still be won over who can give both Biden and Trump strong arguments against donors to meet with them and those people a little bit more in the middle. Biden will definetly win with support of the progressive and independent voters and maybe even people who don't normaly vote anymore, but he needs to give them more then he is doing now to be sure of a secure win. If he gambles and does not, a Green-party could pressure him to give something in return for not blocking him on not all unprogressive choices or even Trump could win. I don't see that as bad. With the threat of Trump or a big enough Green-party to effectively sabotage him Biden, the party and donors must ask themselves what a too meager win or even loss could cost them.

@@nicothenu8903 it sounds like we're on the same page, with the same dilemmas. i think there are two elements you need to throw into the stew. one, there are plenty of anti-donar progressives who are actually -willing- to jump off the jimmydore cliff. and i do think that if this election is even CLOSE it will be in the ballpark for trumpworld to throw a bunch of W vs. Gore moves and BrooksBrothers Riots, and steal this shit and the Dems have a history of wussing. two, and i'm not sure this is really about our discussion, but is more an important dynamic to consider, it's that the "donor-class" the push comes to shove, will always throw in with the fash. not ALL but as a class. there needs to be the pressure of a working class movement to leverage the whole thing. and we're slowly getting there. and slow might not be fast enough, but keep building for the next opportunity. anyway. yes, i deal with the same dilemma about confessing to the "good cop". lately i just tell my liberal or somehow progressive pro biden friends that ok i'm probably going to vote for him and he SUCKS because of: Iraq, Wall Street/credit industry, bailouts, Crime Bill, unsharpness, ...it's easy to say how much jeopardy the DNC is putting us in to get their way. cut out the space for the fight NOW. and donate/phone bank/knock doors for those progressive down ballot people nationally. do what you gotta do in your milieu! fuerza!
