In this tutorial I run through my preferred method for Modelling a Structural Composite Floor Slab in Revit, complete with a Metal Deck Profile.
This video will start with the process of creating the Profile Family, then how it is used as part of the Structural Floor Assembly so it is now visible in Sections and finally a few tips and tricks to know, such as presentation conditions and how to control Floor Cantilevers easily.

Quick Note : Around the 11.40 mark I assigned the Wrong Deck Profile to the Structural Slab. I should have used the Comflor 60 deck that we generated the Profile family before but absent mindedly I assigned it to the Comflor 70 that was already present in the project. My Bad!

Perfect tutorial, exactly what I was looking for. Quick question, what if I actually want to also show the metal decking in the Revit model? Is that possible? Cheers

With this method you cannot see the floor deck in 3D. As defined by the ISO 19650 standards of level of information need it wouldn't be recommended either due to the complexity of the surface repeating over such a large span. Niall

Hi! Like others in the comments, the profile I generated is not showing up in the Structural Deck Properties. Mine is just single lines (so no thickness like the example you showed) but I only see one option which is not the family/profile I created. Any thoughts?

hi there. ive followed your instructions to the T - but yet when i open my structural deck properties, my new deck profile cannot be found? do you know why this is?
@8020BIM
@8020BIM 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dane. Your Issue might be that your profile has a depth (as it was for me in the video). What I mean by this is the profile should not have a thickness. So instead of drafting the deck profile family with the nominal steel thickness you should just have the bottom line of the profile in place and not account for the real world steel thickness. Once I did this after the video I could see my profile in the drop down list when creating the structural floor assembly. Hope this helps! Let me know how you get on and I'll try answer any other questions that you have in the meantime. Niall

Is there any possibility of creating that same profile but at the top part of the floor? Instead of having the relief at the bottom part of the slab, having it at the top part facing upwards. Thank you!

Great tutorial, just one question... once a metal deck has been assigned I suppose that revit takes that into account when making material takeoffs right?
@8020BIM
@8020BIM 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for the feedback. Yes it should be no issue. The material takeoff for the deck is area based so the material takeoff should be relatively straightforward. Regards Niall

Hi, first of all, compliments for the video. Secondly, I have some doubt in the minute 11:09. Once the fimily is edited and loaded, why I can't see it in the Structural Deck Properties -> Deck Profile?? Many thanks for your answer!!!

@@annafranceschi807 Can you explain to me how you resolved this issue? I am having the same issue where my cant see the family loaded under Deck profiles. I am not sure I follow what he means by "having the bottom line of the profile in place and not accounting for the real world steel thickness". I am relatively new to revit, so a simplified answer or steps on how to resolve this would be very much appreciated!

Sir. Why to see 3D dont have steel deck, only section
@8020BIM
@8020BIM 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. At the start of the video I stated that this method does not create a visible deck profile in 3D. The reason for it is because it makes the file too heavy graphically, so the programmers never allowed the profile to extrude in 3D views. If you must see the deck in 3D you can use a model in place family, draw over the 2D profile and extrude it the depth of the floor. Then, cut the floor with the in place family. Hope this helps Niall
