The Swedish researcher Svante Paabo won this year's Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his research into how human beings evolved, Sweden's Karolinska Institute announced on Monday.
Paabo was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1955 and performed his prize-winning studies at the University of Munich and at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.
Paabo sequenced the genome of the Neanderthal and also discovered the previously unknown hominin Denisova. His work showed the genomic changes that came to differentiate humans and their closest cousins. He also showed that both Neanderthals and Denisovans contributed genes that still exist in modern humans.

Why would it be surprising? I have been involved in medical science for decades, and with the exception of the h. pylori bacteria as the major cause of gastric ulcers and gastritis, almost every other prize went to some kind of genetic research. We tell PhD students that if they are not studying genetics, they can forget about ever getting a Nobel. I am not a genetics researcher, and I consider what I am doing, merely the intermediary until reliable genetic medicine is available. For myself and my colleagues, in 2 generations, we will not even be a footnote. But somebody has to help the people today.

Assuming however that it was always our germs killing the others and never the other way around that would be a mistake. We might never know the full truth about their demise as most material things turn to dust in 15 to 20 thousand years. We might already have had more advanced civilisations in the span of the 160k years homo sapiens have been around then we think. Especially if we look at the almost 800k years since hominids had a similar brain. If we disappeared today, only the remains of our geo-stationarry satellites would remain as proof of our existence.

I am marveled by western countries thinking in this particular area. Let's use the US for example, in the justice system or in the court room an individual is ask to take on oat (ref.the Bible) and these same Americans say "in God we trust" they teach evolution yet their God without apology in the first words in the Bible say he is the creator and throughout the Bible. How can I have confident in someone who don't belive in God testimony after taking an oat in court. Basically what is the purpose of the oat when your people don't believe in God? Saying "in God we trust" is different from your actions. Imagine this nobel prize winner should appear in court and take an oat, what purpose that serve when he don't believe in God. I am attacking anyone but I am just trying to make sense of having people take an oat when they dont believe in God.
@thebowman2

Some things are just tradition you know. The same reason why they still wear white wigs in the UK court. They still do it because no one wants to break this long held tradition. Even if its relevancy has diminished because a lot of people don't believe god will punish them if they break the oath they swore. Additionally I believe breaking an oath is still generally looked down upon by society and might have an effect on your social standing. But the only way to make people really respect an oath is to have severe real life consequences for breaking it. But even this is still no guarantee of course.

Entropy is increasing, randomness of disorder. Unique only in a tiny box. 2nd law of thermodynamics iincludes outside of the lab boxes.
@RP-ch8yn
@RP-ch8yn Жыл бұрын
Earth isn’t even an isolated system. 2nd law of thermodynamics applies to isolated systems. The earth absorbs 10 million terajoules of energy from the sun every single second. That adds up to 3.5 • 10^24 Joules per year. If the earth absorbs ΔQ of heat from the sun, it will be balanced by an equal amount of heat radiation from the earth back in to space. (Rebecca Lindsey, 2009 NASA) Using this, we get that the temporary loss of heat in sun is ΔQ divided by the temperature of the radiation, which is 5778 Kelvin. Now, the ΔQ flows back into space at temperature 283 Kelvin which is the avg temperature on the earth. Since the change in entropy ΔS = ΔQ/T, we get that the total entropy is -ΔQ/T1 + ΔQ/T2. Now T1 = 5778K and T2 = 280K, thus, the decrease in entropy is compensated with an increase in entropy by more than 20 times the amount. By using the formula of entropy, the net increase in entropy in this system would be 1.1 • 10^22 Joules/Kelvin every year. In 4 billion years, this adds up to 4.4 • 10^31 Joules/Kelvin. This is such a ridiculously large quantity that even if all the biomass on earth that had ever existed were to be transformed from an unimaginably disorganized state (a gas at 10000 degrees Kelvin) into a frozen solid at the absolute zero, 0 degrees Kelvin (which is physically impossible and thus amazingly generous in this assumption), this could happen once every month for 4 billion years straight without causing a decrease in entropy of the total system.

@@jimmyquigley7561 Try to watch this woke agenda with a neutral eye and rethink that "being awake". It means canceling every nonconforme thinking, labeling it fascist, leads to a totalitarian, intolerant(YES) consumer society without roots, identity and freedom.
