When you find you've been "let go" from your job, the unfortunate reality is that, many times, no one will be there to help. Seasoned executive, Todd Putman, shares how to get back on your feet fast.
Todd Putman is the Chief Commercial Officer at Bolthouse Farms. He recently served as an architect of “Eat Brighter,” a partnership between the White House and First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative, the Sesame Workshop, and the Produce Marketing Association created to encourage children to eat more fruits and vegetables. Todd earned a bachelor’s degree in Communication from Purdue, and now sits on the Liberal Arts Dean’s Advisory Council.
Todd, who is passionately committed to empowering people to accomplish their goals and realize their individual potential. spends his limited free time collaborating on his upcoming book, Be More: Find Your Truth, Tell Your Story, and Get What You Want Out of Life.

This is true. I had a job I started back in 1999 until 2008. I got let go and people who I thought were my friends, even best friends didn't even call me, come by my house, ask if they could help or anything. Not one. I struggled badly. I lost my house, car and on the verge of homelessness. I mean, I wasn't expecting them to drop by and give me bunch of money, but when you don't even hear a phone call. That was pretty hurtful.

Yea , in my experience I learned that when you are perceived to not be doing well people generally avoid you because they dont want to take on your emotional baggage, but when you are doing well in life people gravitate toward you. Most people are only there for you conditionally, as humans we look out for ourselves unless (1) we benefit from in in some way (return on investment, belief in good karma) or (2) we are being watched by others

what i know about this old college roomy of mine is that he is trustworthy. you can have opinions about his message, but at the end of the day, trust that he fully believes in his message, and it is based on a plethora of experience. the only argument i have is about his sister and mom not caring. i know them both, and they do care about him. but he is right, nobody else cares. do what you love.

I've "known" and "known of" Todd Putman for a couple of decades. What I "know" is reflected in this talk: he does care; he knows from whence he speaks; and he is a top tier marketeer/general manager (for non-novitiates: you don't get into P&G without an MBA from a top tier BSchool without passing the dreaded "M Test" which he obviously aced.) A standing albeit not particularly crowded ovation from my living room Todd. And that's the second such ovation after my second viewing of your talk. Purdue U listen hard as well as any others of you lucky enough to stumble upon this talk. Signed, Sr. Level Retained Executive Recruiter (e.g. I know from whence I speak.)

I thought the concept he was trying to express was that of being proactive, Covey's 1st habit. A proactive person takes full responsibility for their outcome and does not blame others. I thought he was trying to teach the listener to be proactive by taking full responsibility for their lot in life. Even if 90% of ones failure is because of others, it is still 100% of their responsibility to deal with it.

What' or who Is Covey?
@naturalbornscientists6576
@naturalbornscientists6576 4 жыл бұрын
@@frankiegunnz8066 Stephen Covey was the author of 7 habits of highly effective people. The first habit in the book was to "be proactive." He quoted Viktor Frankl's definition of proactive, but emphasized taking responsibility for whatever reaction one has. In being proactive, a person takes sole responsibility as if no one cares. Your talk made me think of the need to be true to myself first independent of what other think. I liked your presentation.

I thought I was a pessimist. He’s so full of it it’s sad to be him. People do care. I care. Even when I feel/know that nobody cares about me. Am I a crier? Yes. And if you say no, you’re a liar. The only truth is I don’t care about what negative people say. Cry, recover and move on. You’ll be happier. There are empathetic people and there are cold souls.
@Sm-ig4rn
@Sm-ig4rn 4 жыл бұрын
Actually what he's saying is true. People only care to a certain extent. Maybe you'll get a phone call, maybe they'll wish you luck on your search. But no one is going to REALLY care about your career or success, make it a priority to help you be successful, or lead you to that path and teach you their skills. Everyone is really on their own. People care in the sense that they want everyone to be happy and do well, but other than that, they have their own problems to worry about.

I think one thing that is not accounted for here is academic jobs. It is not just on you to get the job. Your references need to write you letters too. It is always hard to have to chase your recommenders to make sure that they send the letters in before the deadline, and if they don't read your emails because they are always busy with their research, that would ruin your career opportunities! How many academic jobs are out there in the first place?

It will be very hard to work fulltime for 30 days in starvation though and have no electricity and have to live on the street. And no one will show no mercy for me beeing tired and weak, just enjoying my suffering. No mercy and understanding for those whom get sick. Forgive them, they dont know what they are doing.

I think the part about being responsible for yourself and your career is great, but the last part was not as useful. I don't have a passion, but the ones I had, I lost interest in.
