It’s nice having them every once in a while! But not every year? “It’s not every year” check again if you believe that. 4 of the last 5 years have had a wild card team in the World Series with the Astros going to game 7 against the rays despite having a losing record which would have been 5 for 5. Baseball is too random to give this many teams a chance to go deep. It hardly has anything to do with one team being objectively better or worse than any other. There’s nothing special about an underdog storyline when it’s every year. Literally the exact sentiment you might have for dynasty teams. If you want underdog teams to be special, watch basketball because it hardly ever happens. The rockets from the 90’s are still talked about to this day for that reason
@timmyg831

Basketball is totally different from baseball though. I’m from Houston and I grew up watching Rockets in the 90s. Olajuwon was literally the 2nd best player in NBA and during MJ brief retirement he was the best player. He dominated both ends of the court. In baseball one player can’t dominate, it’s a total team game. But in basketball it’s possible to dominate. Olajuwon did dominate over his competition. Rockets weren’t a dynasty but they were a great team. They weren’t a “wild card” team or an underdog. People really underestimated the skill of Olajuwon, Drexler and teammates. They were able to beat great teams even sweeping a supposedly better Shaq/Penny’s Magic.

As a Phillies fan, this World Series is great because it proves that there is parity in the MLB. One team proved you can go deep with a really solid young core, and the other was able to get there with the right veterans at the right time. Plus, since both teams only have one World Series win between themselves and 3 WS appearances (before this year), it’s guaranteed be a memorable World Series for generations for both teams Also, rooting for chaos/underdogs is always fun

I personally loved this World Series. It was so exciting watching these underdog teams battle it out. NLCS/ALCS was by far the best I've seen since the Cubs and the Indians won their pennants and gave us the duel of the droughts of 2016. I think in the long run this will be good for baseball as people a few years ago weren't happy with the excessive favoritism towards certain teams.

What is hurting the ratings more than anything is lack of ways to watch. It’s not on any streaming service as an example unless you have a live TV package. NLCS was at least on Max. Baseball needs to make a few changes to max out its potential. First and obvious, end the blackouts. They also need to incentivize bottom feeder teams to be competitive (*cough cough central divisions). And finally, they need to reduce the schedule. Go back to the 154 game schedule so that the season won't drag on longer and so that it minimizes scheduling conflicts with football and basketball.

I have been saying for years to stop appointing division winners automatic playoff spots. Teams can say they won their division, but that shouldn't be the reason they are in the playoffs. If there are 6 teams in the playoffs, the top 6 records should be in. Seed based on the season records overall, not based on who won the divisions.

As a die hard baseball fan, last year was the first year in years I didn't watch a single world series game. One of the most boring matches in the 2000's. This year's is fun to watch, and honestly I had the dbacks on my bracket winning the world series before it started, so I'm not at all suprised they connected and made their way here. Honestly screw the "casual fans". Baseball isn't about money, it's about the experience. That's why literally every other baseball league doesn't pay players a bunch, and try to do everything in their power for "ratings". They let the players play, and the postseason fun ensure

Nobody is watching The World Series.....and it DOES matter. When the biggest postseason stage of the league draws the lowest average ratings ever, then something is definitely wrong with the league and sport. When the majority of the fan base of the league are going through their midlife crisis, heading to retirement or are in a retirement home, then something is definitely wrong with the league and the sport. Baseball is dying....albeit slowly. It's flat out disappointing that most baseball fans, especially the diehards, seem to choose to ignore and turn a blind eye to this reality. Their ignorance will lead the MLB to face some serious problems in the next 15-20 years.

As a Rangers fan in Stros Country. I was more than happy to see y'all win it all in 2017. It was good for the state of Texas (especially Houston at the time) and for the rivalry. I think the main reason people aren’t watching the WS is because they can’t. Most ppl don’t have cable anymore, and if you don’t it’s going to cost $75 for Fubo or YTTV. Just too expensive for most fans to pay. They’d rather just watch the 11 min recap on YT 2 hours after the game. If the MLB made games more accessible to the fans, the ratings would be better. I don’t think it’s about the ratings, it’s about the $.

WS Ratings have been declining for the last decade with more people cutting the cable. The 2016 series was a fluke that benefitted from the Cubs going after their first Championship in more than 100 years and the “curse” narrative. The sudden hubbub over TV ratings seems more like just whining. The Dodgers get eliminated and suddenly everyone is a TV analyst for Variety.

As someone who grew up in Dallas all my life and watched the heartbreak in 2010 and 2011, seeing them finally bring home a championship is nice but it just really doesn’t feel that rewarding against a team like the Diamondbacks who frankly didn’t deserve to be in the postseason to begin with. When 100 win teams are 1-6 in WC/LDS series it really seems like it’s a pattern of baseball’s best teams not being there for baseball’s best moments, and a World Series where a 90-win team has the home field advantage just doesn’t feel like a World Series. It seemed like the most anticipated series this years was going to be a Dodgers-Braves NLCS and neither team even made it there.

This is where pro sports fails. They focus on instant money and numbers rather than building as many solid franchises as possible. As you said, the Astros were nobodies until they put themselves into the national spotlight by winning. If the Rangers can continue being in the WS mix for 3 or 4 more years, they'll upend the Astros because the Rangers have a good image while Houston will always be the armpit.

Also, what's the point of an MLB subscription if you can't even watch the post season or home games during the regular season. Ratings don't account for all the people that use 3rd party sites to watch the games

Hopefully they undo the third wild card spot, if not the second one too. The wild card should be a safety net to keep a really good team from missing the postseason because they play in a division with another really good team, not a backdoor to allow teams that are barely over .500 to sneak in to the postseason, get hot and possibly steal a championship from more deserving teams.
@rustyshackelford4224
@rustyshackelford4224 9 ай бұрын
Yep. What you've described the Wild Card is what the whole WC format was envisioned as, as a response to the 103 Win SF Giants missing the postseason altogether back in 1993. Yeah, back then, _teams had to be actually freakishly good_ to dream reaching the postseason. Bring back the WC format MLB had in place from 1995-2011.
