We hope you've enjoyed our two docs on the past, present and future of Bethesda Game Studios. We have a half dozen smaller videos on everything from the design of Fallout Shelter, to The Dark Brotherhood and more. Make sure to sub to get all these docs for free too. Again, a massive thanks to our Patrons for funding this work, and to you for watching. It's been incredibly humbling to see so many of you care about our work. We think we're at the start of an exciting new adventure for games coverage and are delighted to have you along for the ride. The best is yet to come. Thank you all.

I live in West Virginia (between Grafton and Morgantown) and I don't think Bethesda realized how excited the people here would be about being the center point of a large video game franchise. Bars are having launch parties, its been all over the news, and I've even seen multiple people saying that they are going out to buy a console just so they can play this game.

Noclip will never say anything bad in their documentaries mostly because they want to be able to do more documentaries in the future go back to all of their videos and see anything bad against the company any company that they're working with you will not because they are working with them and they want to work with them in the future it's so if they say something bad about them then they won't work with them in the future so they don't say anything bad about them and they only say good things about the games in the documentaries and how the games are made and all the good things and the good press about the games you will never hear all of the bugs and microtransactions and issues within the games from a noclip documentary

It would be fascinating to have them return for a followup. Maybe after the big wastelanders update that's supposed to add a whole new main quest and NPCs hits. I've had fun with 76 but there's no denying there's a lot of problems with it. Giving the team at Bethesda a chance to explain it all might not be the best idea *right now,* but depending on how confident they are with that overhaul, who knows.

@@umadbroimatroll7918 It's the cleverest decision. That's why when the post-mortem on what went wrong with this game will inevitably happen - it'll be most likely be on NoClip. They've been trying to maintain excellent relationships with more-or-less everyone. Bad-mouthing just for clickbait, in the end gets you nowhere in life. A general life lesson most people learn sooner or later.
@umadbroimatroll7918
@umadbroimatroll7918 4 жыл бұрын
@@yinoveryang4246 here is the thing no clip will not be the one to make that documentary. They are so focussed on pleasing their corporate overlords that they will never talk bad about a game you will never hear about anything bad in a game from a no clip documentary. The thing is that doesn't make it a bad documentary noclip has to keep good relations with all of their business partners so that they are able to get information that other games journalists are not able to get. That's the main reason no clip has the style of documentaries instead of game reviews and game journalism because companies allow them to come into their Studios to give interviews and to look at the unfinished games because they will not say anything bad about them unlike other games journalist and games reviewers.

@@umadbroimatroll7918 Even when Studios have gone bust, or fallen out with each other (like Id or Telltale), they try to keep all parties happy. (Although they made one or two quite gentle assertions with Telltale actually). Who knows who's responsible anyway ? To jump to conclusions about where the mistakes were made, and who was responsible is deeply unfair. Because no-one, apart from the people working in these studios, actually knows who made those decisions. Although people like Todd Howard, who is clearly a creative man with ideas, not a money-man necessarily, gets lambasted. But who actually knows what pressures he was under? He's the only face, the face of that studio, and therefore gets attacks that are sometimes personal - and that's not an easy place to be. But there's only going to be one way to find out isn't there ... and that's to have a good relationship with people. With everyone. Their positive relationship with studios like CDPR, will stand them in good stead. They can also most probably be trusted with confidentialities, and I imagine they're contractually bound to keep confidentialities also. They're trusted because they seem to care about journalistic standards - meaning accuracy.

5:45 This explains so much of what happened (bugs) with fallout 76. They took something that was designed for one player and tried to shortcut making it a multiplayer game. It explains why there were bugs from Fallout 4 still in fallout 76 and why there are a lot of issues. It makes me wonder how much harder it would have been to start from scratch and steal little bits and pieces of code from Fallout 4 as opposed to trying this "shortcut" of forcing a single player game into multi player.

What I've gotten from this video, feel free to add on: -Ghouls called the "Scorched" to replace raiders -2 headed possums and irradiated hostile plants -63 "things" (enemies?) And more? -6 regions of the map with own flavor and difficulty -Crashed space station -Paper Maché masks (10) -Public workshops to claim -There is ore, lead, For example, can make bullets "C.A.M.P has restrictions, "so you don't camp outside the vault and grief" -Crafting system retained "and more" -Eating and drinking is apparently a necessity like FO4 Survival Mode, you can "starve". -Diseases -"Mutations", no inverse rad health bar (I believe) the more rads you have the more likely you are to be "mutated": "Like 'Traits' from FO1+2 Where they have pluses and minuses" (Curable, along with ways to permanently get them for ones you really like). Mostly gameplay, some are visual. -Weapon condition from FO3 is back so you're never "comfortable" -Bartering between players (like trade) -"Perk cards" with a limited amount and re-rolls, you can also share perk cards with your party allowing "specialists" in your group. Also in the end give you plus and minuses -POSSIBILITY of setting up a robot vendor -"Wanted" level for highly aggressive players -24-32 people in the map (you can see where they are) -Possible team deathmatch -Cosmetic microtransactions (still able to earn through gameplay) -Free updates "for years to come"

LMFAO yeah. I've been having fun with friends and kinda alone but the Uber lonely feeling missing the NPCs hurts solo. Nothing personal which sucks. Fallout felt lonely enough so that burst of euphoria and happiness when you found non hostile humans was amazing and added to the charm of camps and cities. Lore wise there shouldn't be any I guess but I wish they added them but made raider types just rare as fuck since there's so few what if another very large vault opened but they were bad guys. And NPCs for quest I get that wouldn't make since but could've also just made up some outside vaults that opened and people spreadyl out. Even if they were few and far between humans giving wuest would've felt better.

Darn. Todd seems like a really nice person here. I would relay like him to tell the real story of Fallout 76 some day and show us what went so wrong with it's launch. I am glad the game is better now in 2023, and people are enjoying it, but that launch... It's puzzling. This documentary doesn't solve this puzzle. One thing I know is Todd is happy to try and fail, rather than sit and do boring things. And I can respect that. But the way they handled their fan base was unimaginably bad, and I can't get behind that stuff.

On one hand, they really seem to want to make a good game and its good they want to take risks. However, even though they did do their research on the area and building areas, the interview suggests their approach to designing mechanics seems plain chaotic and unfocused. Its weird how much they seem focused on busywork and a type of tourism approach to the exploration. The worldbuilding and gameplay style that made the IP famous, the one made by Black Isle studios and Obsidian, were diametrically opposed to this. Then I hear them say "it still feel like Fallout", I can't help but ask "what are you talking about? Do you even understand the core pillars of this franchise" ?

We can clearly see how passionate they are with their products, it's just a shame some decisions were badly took (no human npcs is a big one) and someone there is pushing the games faster than they should. This game needed an extra year of development and more care on the lore. I'm trying to look things differently, and the good news is that as this game seems empty and boring, the team responsible for quests, npcs and such must be working hard on the next games!

this looks a lot more fun then what we were shown at e3. i wish they would have shown character specialization with perk cards and what not, more on the nukes and it creating high end areas. todd saying a dozen characters rather then 24-32 really sets off concerns especially in a world 4x the size of fallout 4. but this was a great documentary. can't wait for the beta.

Same here. I love hearing 4x the size of Fallout 4, but is 24-32 too little people? 32 might work alright, I feel as though 24 is too low. I was hoping for 50ish with the size of the world though. That's what I'm most anxious about for sure. Still, I'm hyped.

I've never played 76, but I think it's telling that in this doc they always discussed multiplayer in the context of "bumping into people" while going on a solo adventure. Back when I played MMOs like WoW and FF14, I certainly did a lot of bumping into people, but my most fond memories are when I had a specific group of friends in mind that I wanted to group up with.

First off, much love to everyone at Noclip for all of these excellently crafted documentaries. You are doing and have been doing amazing work. The saddest part of Fallout 76 to me, based on this documentary, the History of Bethesda documentary, and every other interview or piece of information I've read about them, is this: the people who work on these games seriously care and are passionate about what they are doing, with such palpable belief in what they want to achieve....and yet this game launched in such an utterly abysmal way, and still to this day, nearly 4 years later, the game is still not healthy or vibrant. I see exactly where they were going with the game and what they wanted achieve. And while I'm not particularly keen on the way some things were executed, on a fundamental level, I think there is some semblance of a pretty good game in there; I love the map. And I say this as a devout New Vegas acolyte. It's just a shame that all their work went into making the game, so much of their time and humanity, only for it to kind of become a mixed bag of emotions that has tainted their customer-base's perception of them. I feel for them, honestly. Those two years post Fallout 76s launch, were not particuarly kind to them in the public forum. And while a lot of things went down, during that time, that are absolutely not excusable and deserve the scorn they recieved, Fallout 1st along with the CE cheap bag fiasco, I still feel it must have been really hard on some of the devs to see that game launch and it be recieved so harshly.

Well said, and now with starfield's release I don't think Bethesda can continue to roll with the engine theyve been using all these years either because it doesn't offer much in terms of stable gameplay. At this point they might as well just give us the framework with all the content and let the community develop the storyline. Honestly the story is just a vessel for the engine.

I think it should be like this. There is a list of everyone in the server, and you can choose who appears on your map for playing with friends, and you can hide yourself from other but it stops you from seeing others. So its like there is a choice between your two options, but you can choose who appears on your map.

They had the Star Wars Galaxies guys attached and then it made sense. Galaxies is a true sandbox where the player is given a few tools and they make their own adventures, towns and journeys. Theres a few npc but the players make the economy, gear etc Whereas say The Old Republic that replaced it is a curated experience. Like a BGS game vs a Bioware one. Say Skyrim vs a Dragon Age affair. In time 76 will be popular to a niche audience as Galaxies has become, unfortunately Galaxies is now entirely fan supported and has waaayy more bugs and glitches, but its forgiven. I disagree with the missteps in the monetisation, but tbh after the Worlds update, the subscription model is a good way to go. Groups can play together in their own space curated by the Game master of sort. When it's ironed out a bit, the host can add different conditions to the session like double XP and such, spitballing here but you get what I mean? The group's structures and factions are more persistent for them. One week the Host can add a hellish Radstorm to the area and tweak up the difficulty. The players have to take shelter more often and theres greater risk vs reward. In the aftermath farms gain greater yield, but the enemies retain their difficulty etc. The person who does pay the subscription who's invested can have a toolkit they can play about with and get creative to set the tone and then watch as the gameplay emerges. One guy wants to be the camp provisioner who cooks and makes stew and guns. One woman wants to be the Doctor with a chem habit. A couple want to hit mines for loot. Maybe the head of the group is the server guy and creates a Walking Dead type heirarchy, or Maybe they play as a hermit? Or the group joins the settlers and the host the Raiders orrr...lThey all can on their server. You know roleplayers...

Indeed, people are so used to bs games like Rust that make fun at the expense of someone elses. They refuse to believe it can be done any other way and wont even make an attempt to try it or even consider how it could be done properly. Perhaps its a product of gaming culture these days or maybe of the human condition as a whole.

The whole point was they wanted GUNFIRE to tell you there were human players. Yet, ghouls will have GUNS. As far as I know, the sound a gun makes doesn't change just because the person who pulled the trigger is full of radiation. Also, the fact that PLAYERS ARE SHOWN ON THE MAP, makes the argument ridiculous as well. This is just their justification for not having any friendly groups/factions to interact with. This game will have no real quests. Just simplistic MMO style quests, even though it is just an -MO.

@krashd
@krashd 6 жыл бұрын
By going all out you mean they've handed it to someone else because Zenimax are desperate to cash in but the actual main Bethesda people have no interest in making it. A bit like Elder Scrolls Online wherever that went. It's always the same story, Rockstar North had no intention of an online mode for GTAV so Rockstar Games hounded Leslie Benzies out of his own studio and handed his franchise to someone else. Games that are made solely for profit by studios that were handed them are never as good as those that are made out of love by a studio that wanted to make them. Just look at Battlefield Hardline, EA took DICE's franchise and gave it to a third party who released a shit game.

He's not wrong. The persistent cell based gameplay mechanics are a major draw for their games, and no other contemporary company does it. Even the likes of TW3 has mere bag drops of loot and very little object interaction with the world, though I hope CDProjekt does something with Cyberpunk 2077 along the lines that BGS operates here.

agreed, however it'd be better if Bethesda went ahead and borrowed the Idtech Engine and did away with Gamebryo, all their games would instantly improve after that lol better lighting, worlds look better, it seemed to handle a RPG lyte and hardcore shooting and driving no prob, lighting, character models & all that looked good and I think on a larger scale no vehicles they could totally do Fallout or TES in that engine without all the frakkups Gamebryo brings; eh, no matter the engine though there's always strengths and weaknesses but I think Idtech has more strengths....

Should have been called "Making A Failure: where is the Fallout in my Fallout game?". They thought they could pocket that money they would have spent on Voice Actors and recording time by ripping out the NPCs and thought Todd could convince us it was a good idea. It didn't "JUST WORK" it stalled out the franchise and made people rush to play OuterWorlds instead.

Oh my gosh Danny I lost track of you a year or so ago and boy was I excited to see you in this video! +1 sub just for Danny! That being said the more I discover about Fallout 76 the more excited I'm getting for it. Bethesda is one of my favorite studios at the moment. So many others have failed me recently ranging from Bioware to Bungie. I'm not a huge fan of all the expensive microtransactions in ESO but I still play it. I also really don't like the loot boxes in that game as well. Hopefully none of these games ever go down that route. Everyone should have learned from the EA Star Wars backlash of 2017.

Always appreciate Noclip for producing docs on subjects and material they're interested in. I'm sure they wrestled with the potential downfalls of a pitch like this, one that walks the line between a window into current large scale development and publisher friendly, pre-release PR for an unfinished product. I don't think they nailed it here, there's too much of the Fallout 76 development story that is obfuscated or left untold as it currently stands, but I bet plenty of lessons were learned in case they ever decide to go the embedded route with a publisher again.

this is one of the most exciting games i have ever seen. The context the video gave me allowed me to start dreaming up what kind of character i would want to create in the new fallout. Like how to become such a charismatic player that you could create a massive following from other players and become the greatest leader in fallout 76. It would be cool to allow players to create their own factions other players could join maybe mod support would allow design of exclusive gear and crafting items for the faction you chose.
