Another excellent video. 24 hours ago I stuck mine on an 85Ah Varta battery that was 4 years old when it was taken out of my car around a year ago as it was no longer holding its charge due to lack of use; the battery was reading just over 4v before I powered up the charger. Once switched on it started what I assume is NOCO's automatic pulse charging as it fluctuated between ~19v then down to ~7v, earlier today it was reading just over 12v and showing 25% charged, just now it's ~13.5v and showing 50%. As for the 40Ah maximum battery, NOCO has stated that it's what they put in the chart they included for charge times v's capacity along with other batteries of lower capacity (8, 12, 18, 24) and people mistook it for being the maximum. I've seen 1* reviews being given because it won't charge their pancaked 100Ah batteries in an hour and other just as stupid reasons. NOCO really should make it clearer that this is more of a trickle-charge/maintainer and not an out & out charger. I'm looking forward to your next video testing it. ̶C̶a̶n̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶ ̶s̶e̶e̶ ̶a̶n̶y̶w̶h̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶a̶n̶y̶ ̶i̶n̶f̶o̶ ̶o̶n̶ ̶m̶a̶n̶u̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶c̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶d̶e̶s̶u̶l̶f̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ ̶m̶o̶d̶e̶?̶ ̶ ̶I̶ ̶c̶a̶n̶ ̶o̶n̶l̶y̶ ̶f̶i̶n̶d̶ ̶r̶e̶f̶e̶r̶e̶n̶c̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶c̶h̶a̶r̶g̶e̶r̶ ̶a̶u̶t̶o̶m̶a̶g̶i̶c̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶s̶t̶a̶r̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶&̶ ̶s̶t̶o̶p̶p̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶r̶e̶c̶o̶v̶e̶r̶y̶ ̶m̶o̶d̶e̶ NM, found it, press & hold mode for 3 sec. then press again for 12v repair mode.

@@razenby Ah, I must have missed that, was it in one of the four videos (4, lol, I bet you can no longer stand the sight of this) or a separate video? I'll rewatch them again in any case, I'll use a different IP & account for the algorithm. My charger has finished working its magic on the old battery and it's sat at 13.2v, I've taken it off now & I'll monitor the battery to see if/how much the voltage drops. I'm planning on fitting the charger in the engine bay or battery box (as the 2DUK), I'll cut the mains lead short and source some kind of small, waterproof plug & socket combo, but I'd better do it quickly as my son is threatening to "liberate" it as he's having issues with his motorbike battery or alternator or wiring which we need to get to the bottom of and he's sick of having to push-start the thing and he says my old charger is like lugging around a microwave. Pffft, kids these days. :D

@@Bob_Dub it is common for chargers that you need run charging cycle again, 2-3 times, let battery rest 24-48h and start charging again, and also measure achieved voltage after 24-48h resting. Ctek mxs5 requires 3 cycles to charge 50Ah battery from 0 to 100% -> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ga-Gpbpq2c2tYHk.html

I just used a 1 amp Schumacher manual battery charger for my BMW 1000 CCA battery that was at 11.2 volts from sitting for a year disconnected, and it would not start my car, I also used my PulseTech PowerPulse battery desulfator connected to the battery and left it with the charger on it for 72 hours, and then left the desulfator on it for a week, it now starts my car just fine.

Have you tried testing for “load dump” i.e. when the charger is connected to the vehicle and user engages the stater. When stater engages the battery voltage will drop, then upon dis-engagement the battery voltage will spike.
@razenby
@razenby 7 ай бұрын
Do you mean starting the car with the charger connected? All of these chargers have a current limit on the secondary charging side. They just shit down or limit when the terminal voltage drops. You will get back EMF from the starter but the battery impedance is so low that the battery itself will shut any transient.

Thank you very much, very interesting. It will be great if you can teardown Genius 2D, which intended for in-car mounting. Is it really vibration resistant, how should be?.. And how Noco can get +100 degrees non-working high temp limit (according to manual)…

Thanks for watching. I have a Noco Genuis 2 maintaining my Jaguar battery for nearly four years at 24/7 and it is still working fine. I am not keen to tear it down. I can say that because it is so light it dangling/ from the socket and had a few bumps and drops without any issues. I think it will be fine. In a car the damp is a bigger problem than the vibration. Thermal cycling causes the product to breathe in humid air and then rapid temperature drops that cross the dew point cause internal condensation.

you can probably charge larger batteries than 40Ah with this, probably this is a limit for fully discharged batteries, I suppose there is timer timer limit for bulk charge stage, but you may need repeat charging cycle few times
@razenby
@razenby 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. It will charge most batteries just fine. The manufacturing cost of the next size up is probably very close to this model. It is probably a marketing ploy to direct you to the next model thus maximizing profits from the car market.
@vrod1a
@vrod1a 3 жыл бұрын
@@razenby I don’t know about marketing ploy but the charger has a function where it will show a faulty battery light if the charger fails to fully charge a battery within a certain maximum time, In the case of this 2 amp charger it will take roughly 20 hours to fully charge a fully discharged 40Ah battery, so the fault light will be set somewhere between 20 - 30 hrs, In case of a 90Ah battery that max time limit will have to be somewhere near a 50 hr Mark, In that case that set maximum time will be excessive for a 40Ah or smaller battery, I think that is the reason NOCO only recommended this 2 Amp charger for up to 40Ah batteries. They do make a 10 Amp charger for larger batteries.

@@vrod1a Good point. If the feature is there then I guess you could run it twice. I think it is a marketing plot to address the whole range of the market. Bear in mind that the recommended charging current for most starter batteries is just a measly 3A. Question: Why make a charger that is adequate for all batteries but limit to 40Ah unless you are in a hurry? Answer: So you can sell a more expensive charger with almost the exact same components for a lot more margin. The difference in component cost between a 2A and 5A charger is less than US$4. Yeah i bought the genius 5 a couple months ago over the genius 2 because of the forced mode and the repair mode. Supposedly similar charging sequence like the ctek.. i think the final optimization mode in the noco is like ctek sequence 7. And then they both monitor voltage and start charging if the voltage drops below a set figure.

@@Bob_Dub In the absence of natural or forced ventilation, all heat remains locked in the box. The sensor has no direct contact with the environment. That is why I am curious how it was solved, but we'll see about that in the next part of the test. This version is not very strong so the heat problem should not occur, but anyway, let's see what (hopefully soon) Magic Smoke will show us. However, I am afraid that based on the temperature inside the device, the charging current is reduced to protect against overheating. Nothing more.

@@Tab7.6.Tab7.6 _"In the absence of natural or forced ventilation, all heat remains locked in the box"_ I think if that were true then all houses would be constructed from the same plastic as the case, we'd save a fortune in heating/cooling costs. You can't honestly think that without ventilation the heat would remain within the case indefinitely, right?
@Tab7.6.Tab7.6
@Tab7.6.Tab7.6 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bob_Dub Indeed, the phrase “all heat remains locked in the box” is quite unfortunate, but it was a mental shortcut. However, it is obvious that plastic is not the best heat conductor and in this case it works more as an isolator than a radiator. Instead of picking on words, let's wait peacefully for the temperature compensation test results. Maybe I unfairly judge this device in advance, or maybe it is just simply another marketing mumbo jumbo. We will see it soon.
