#SupportBlackBusiness - Colina Bruce, owner and CEO of Noir Lux Candle Bar, says she believes candles can be a conduit for community building, networking and growth.
“I consider our space as an incubator space,” Bruce said. “We’ve had a lot of people come in and grow their ideas and business within this shop. We want to be a one stop shop for everything Black-owned.”
Bruce became interested in candle-making after she found herself lighting a candle every day during the pandemic, and continued to pursue that passion. Her retail space now features her creations, which are 100% soy wax, as well as space for Bruce to run candle pouring classes. Our Besa Gordon was there to experience one of these classes and made her very own candle.
“We started in the kitchen and now we’re here,” Bruce said. “It was supposed to be a side hustle - really I just wanted to sell ten or fifteen candles a month. Then it really took off.”
She now uses her shop to spread knowledge through both her candle-making classes and through offering support and advice to business owners. Bruce aims to help create a thriving community through the success of all.
“I think it’s important as a business owner that you don’t become a gatekeeper,” Bruce said. “It’s important to share knowledge and experience.”
