Noise reduction in voiceover. Is it a good idea? In this video, Randy walks through the do's and don'ts of using noise reduction processing in your voice over recordings go.voices.com/getstarted
Noise reduction plugins require serious discretion as they can subtly damage your audio in ways that can sometimes only be heard by a professional. It's recommended not to use noise reduction as it typically causes more harm than good. Instead, we suggest treating your noise at the source through absorption, isolation and proper microphone technique.

What's your favourite noise reduction plugin? I like the NS1 for simplicity, and the iZotope Voice De-Noise for more subtle processing.

great tips, sort your space and you'll never have to worry and people will be in awe how good it sounds, I also agree don't use them unless its not going to an editor 👌as an long time VO & Audiobook editor, I find using RX voice de-noise creating a profile from just roomtone is hard to beat, if that doesn't work you can normally bet your bottom dollar NS-1 will do it

Hi Randy! Hoping you might be able to get to give me a suggestion to fix an issue I’m having. I have a potential client who is telling me that there is a little interference in the high frequency part of the spectrum in my audition. Any ideas on how I can fix this? Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

Hi Christina! Usually that issue could be caused by your microphone being near an electrical device that emits a very quiet (often inaudible) high frequency. Examples of such devices include computer monitors or lights. The best way to visually see the issue is to use a spectrogram but the best way to solve this issue is to try and find the cause of the frequency and simply them turn off/move it away. Hope this helps!

Not everybody can record in an ideal situation of an isolated and professionally treated studio. Most do the best we can, so noise suppression plugins are a godsend. Plus, unless you’re working with big clients with professional sound engineers judging your recordings, the average Joes that most of us work for are not judging the fine detail of how a recording sounds. If it’s good enough it’s good enough. Filing this video under good to know but not relevant to most of our real world experiences.

What About Noise Gate? What's Gating?

I think noise gates are even worse when it comes to increasing artifacts and damaging original audio

I totally agree with BlackEyes Media. Gates are used to eliminate noise in areas of your recording where the audio is quiet. Typically, between words, in this case. Gates can be incredibly obvious to clients, and they can be quite tricky to dial in subtly. Like noise reduction, they are a bandaid solution for sub-par recordings. You can utilize gates to lower the noise between words slightly instead of completely removing it. However, I'd recommend staying clear and spending the time getting the room treated. Hope this helps! -Randy

You actually dont need to record a track just to check your noise floor. Just adjust your mic pre gain to where your voice peaks on you DAWs input meter where you want it. For spoken word a good target is peaks no higher than -6db. Safest is to aim for peaks at -10db. That gives plenty of headroom for louder parts. Once gain is set,,, reset your DAWs input meter, be very quiet and see what your input meter says. That is your noise floor. Simple. Because voice over work will usually requires some compression and other post processing which will add some makeup gain,,, the noise floor in your space needs to be at least -70db or better to have an end product with a noise floor at -60db or lower.

Solid points all around! I've always been in the habit of recording the silence so that I can bring it into iZotope and run an analysis on it, but you way is much faster! -Randy
