If you didn't live in California, Bl'ast was a group that people found from ads in Thrasher in the late 80's. They had the emotional intensity of My War era Flag but with the snottiness of the first Suicidal record.
Their sound was a lot more influential than they get credit for, and there was an actual kind of snobbery towards Bl'ast from people like Henry Rollins and Greg Ginn who looked down on the younger group as copyists. But I'd take "The Power of Expression" over records like "Family Man" any day.
Their vibe was more innocent and positive than the Flag of the time and I liked that. Sample opening lyric here: "Time to grab reality by the balls / Daring to ask why before the future falls".
The records were recorded pretty badly but that only added to their charm. They appealed to that scrappy genre of skateboarding where everything had a screaming skull on it, with Bullet 66s, strictly Independents and layback grind combos on curbs. There were no girls attracted to that genre of skateboarding, ever. Believe me, I lived through it.
What's great about this long-lost recording is that Dave Grohl has totally maintained the scrappy, lurching, intensity of Bl'ast, but has added this great bottom end of modern rock "welly." Does that word make sense to Americans? It means "oomph."
Did Greg Anderson make the sleeve have a Sabbath-y goth vibe to it that doesn't really fit the original Bl'ast aesthetic? Sure, but it still looks cool. Thank god they didn't update the logo because it's one of the best Cali hardcore logos, second only to Suicidal.

The Power of Expression is my favorite hardcore album of all time. Age of Quarrel, Damaged and the first Bad Brains album are in my top 5 as well, but the intensity of Power of Expression is peerless.

Bl’ast will always live in my head.. Skinhead hit me in the head with a pipe in the pit, and I was concussed during their set at the Farm in SF.

The opening bass line of the song "it's in my blood" is so awesome and powerful the whole song...I remember as a teenager being floored by it and I still am...frickin 35 years later...I can't believe it!

Clifford is the man. Surfed 1st peak with him many many times. Nuts on stage and the nicest guy out in the water or checking the waves. I miss those times.

Having lived thru hardcore...countless shows, hundreds of albums, and jumped off many of the same stage Dave played on, my honest opinion is this is the greatest goddamn hardcore record of all time. I find it impossible to "look back" on this album, as to us then--this record was the future of hardcore. Other than Fucked Up, I don't think anyone's come close to pushing boundaries like this band since. This album is simply a masterpiece. Just ordered the remix and will probably listen to it 10,000 times more!

I respect dave grohl, any music tribute or info series on a band youll see him in. It could be a doc on lost music of mountain ppl whose music was only laid out in notes found in a tree in the 50s and he'd be an aficionado about it lol

So glad they are remixing BLAST's records for a more authentic sound! Clifford grew up around the corner from us in Aptos CA. He was the first to turn me on to punk music including bands like Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Angry Samoans, Dead Kennedys and many others. I knew he was friends with Nirvana back in their early days but was surprised to see him with Dave Grohl all these years later. Very cool!
