Playing Dungeons and Dragons with John Darnielle of Mountain Goats

4 жыл бұрынWe surprised John Darnielle, lead singer of the Mountain Goats, with a custom campaign of Dungeons and Dragons based on their new full-length album “In League with Dragons.” The album includes references to fantasy, but also deals candidly with life and aging in the modern age. We sat down with him in a castle to play some D&D and talk about the record.

Lol John hated the manner in which they inserted him into the campaign and broke the fourth wall with hokey tMG references.

You guys rolled a natural one, both on understanding D&D and understanding John Darnielle. As a longtime TMG fan, you posted cringe the second you gave him that doll, bro. I bet if you guys had actually respected his roleplaying background and let him do more than scoff at puns based on his song's titles, you would have a really great video. Instead, you have... this.

Late to the comment party, but seriously. I imagine this video was only 6 minutes long because the rest made the people involved look bad (worse rather). I truly hope John doesn't let this nonsense colour his TTRPG experience to the point where it's the last time we might see him playing, I bet he's an awesome player under less lame circumstances. Go watch his address to WoTC when this album came out, it's much better.

I honestly like this video I'm not gonna pretend this is a good campaign, it really isn't, but I think the goal was mainly to advertise the mountain goats within their game and as a case of good idea, bad execution, I really appreciate what they were doing here Plus, John really makes the best with what he's given and it's kinda insane how well he does so
