When this came out, my English teacher saw it as a way to teach the chronology of the last 30 years. -- We studied each entry and by the time we got to "Children of Thalidomide...", growing up in the 80's didn't seem so bad. -- Give it shot; you'll learn alot.

Every history teacher on the planet should access this song. In fact, there is a history teacher making video and one uses this song. Its probably hard for people born after 1980 to grasp why a pregnant Lucy on TV was such a shock. She was the first pregnant woman who appeared on TV entertainment. The pill was marketed first in 1961...married women needed permission from their husband's to get the pill. Loretta Lynn's "The Pill" was banned from 60 or 70 radiostations because it was sooooo controversial. Lol. Elvis and rock and roll, Korea and Vietnam, Neil Armstrong on the moon. I insisted my folks get me up to see the first spacewalk I was 10. Woodstock in 69 followed by Kent State in 70. Ah well I hope I have clarified some things and created some curiosity!!!

It's basically a huge history lesson we didn't start the fire there's a whole lot of people that started a bunch of crap before us from beginning to now and he's basically saying we didn't start the fire but we have to clean up the mess basically we didn't start the fire but we got to clean up the mess at least that's what I get from it anyway love the song Love the reaction take care t w o n. @ No Limit Twon as you may or might have figured out by now, We Didn't Start The Fire was Billy Joel's setting to rock a synopsis of US history spanning many decades. I'm quite certain pre-collegiate students of today are taught very little of this, if any, even though they should be for that old adage "people who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it." If you haven't yet, in my opinion it would be a beneficial excursion to take all the parts of this song and learn just a little bit about them.

Every generation at some point thinks their parents generation created horrible events or did squat and knew nothing..in one occasion a 22 year old informed Joel that nothing happened when he was growing up....oh really. Hold my beer! He is giving this kid a summary of important events and people since he was born....and its a hell of a lot more significant than the kid knew.

He’s spitting out famous figures and headlines from the 50’s 60’s etc. We think it’s crazy now, but it’s always been crazy and falling apart, and it’s up the people at the time to keep building things up.

The conflicts and unrest have been around since Cain killed Abel...he is basically saying, in my humble opinion, that we have tried ways to make it right but it seems impossible so we live with the reality we have...just thinking out loud 😢😢

The people in the video are the members of Billy's family. His mother and father and baby Billy. The lyric of the song describes the events in history that took place during Billy's lifetime. The song serves two purposes; 1. your generation did not start the mess the world is in and 2. there is always something going on.

i agree with most the people he is say we need to clean up the mess that was left im 63 so i was in my 20's in the 80's and i don't think we did a good job on cleaning up the mess me at 63 think it is worst now then it was back then cause everyone disagree with so much now a days im glad im 63 and not 23

The comment you read about the meaning of the video is incorrect. Billy Joel wrote this song in response to the comment of a teenager/young adult in some news interview or other, where the young man said, "Nothing big has happened since the '50s." So this song tells all the "nothing" that's happened in the world.

There's a new version of this that takes up where Billy Joel stopped. Its got the same title but its by Fall Out Boy. Unfortunately, their version is not chronological. I feel a few things were unnecessary and could have been replaced with other things. If you want to do a song of theirs, do "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark" and also "Sugar, We're Goin' Down."

The early version of Scenes from an Italian restaurant is much better than the latter one imo. My first year of university I lived a residence run by nuns...cleanest residence ever!!! The theme song for my floor was Billy Joel's "Only the Good Die Young." ...Catholic girls start much too late...," Maybe. There was a charming Italian restaurant that we just loved Billy Joel's tunes were a big part of my early University years.
