Hello guys, speaking of 2Bus processing in the box, I would like to share my excitement with you about the discovery of FirComp 2 (in VCA mode)... never heard such a "respectful" SSL bus comp emulation that also packs so much punch! It sounds very similar to the FG-grey but punchier and allows for more detail retention. After the discovery, I sold my SSL The Bus+...

I guess printing the VST instruments to audio is done before applying any EQ/compression/reverb etc. right? If so you might still have issues reopening the project if let's say you can't run certain plugin on a insert?

I'm a little confused. So do you create another master bus and carry out the top down mixing on that then progress to the actual master bus?

Can someone explain why the trim is necessary? “I’m using a trim, because the next thing we have is a compressor.” Couldn’t the threshold on the compressor just be adjusted as opposed to trimming the signal prior?

Regarding routing, I noticed Room Mono from Toms, Cymb and snare goes to st.12 and Room Mono from kick in the st.11, which is also the one for snare bottom. Is there any reason for all this or is it a mistake? It sounds amazing though!!!

If nolly is adding eqs, compressions and tape emulations/saturations on the mix bus itself what work is left for the mastering engineer to do apart from just adding a limiter ?! I thought the final eq coloring and glue compression and tape emulations was done by the mastering engineer

Hi I will attempt to answer you, from watching these guys mix religiously the top down mixing approach isn't heavy handed at all if you pay attention these are very miniscule dB boost if boost at all. I do believe he approaches the mix this way to keep his ears nice and fresh, just pulling out the harshness of a rock mix from the beggining i.e. "cymbals" "snare" ect. ect...can minimize hearing fatigue greatly...rather than beating yourself up by dealing with the rattiness of the mix whilst you try and dial the levels in and such...plus I'm sure other reasons too

The bus routing is unclear... so you bus the instruments into their individual busses (guitars, drums, bass) and then buss those all into the instrumental bus? And then that bus goes straight into master bus?

So how are you setting up the first Master? I always assumed you put all those plugins on the ACTUAL master. Is it just another track that you are "Sending" all your audio tracks into?
@shayne08

Devon Nyers wondering the same man, I thought it was originally the master bus but then thought maybe he means drum bus? Not sure because he said all instruments go through it. Maybe he’s made like a second master bus but excluding vocals? 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@Setri123 I know this was posted years ago, but just for clarification for those that are coming across this video, if you're only making instrumentals, you can apply all of this to just the actual master bus without having to worry about configuring a second bus.

@@DRJTUBECHANNEL That's part of my confusion. While my computer is old, it tends to do just fine with virtual instruments in Logic. I can have multiple instances of Alchemy, Serum, Kontact and others open with all sorts of plugins and not have too much trouble. When I load one single instance of GGD in Kontact with no other plugins or channels, it will struggle to play eight bars without giving me the overload dialogue and stopping the track. I'm using a 2011 MBP High Sierra with 8gb of ram reading from a Samsung SSD. I've messed with Kontact's settings as well as Logic's settings trying to find the issue. Did I miss something somewhere?

J hmmm...wish I could help. I use a MacBook Pro 2012, 2.3GHZ intel core i7, 16GB ram, 1600MHz DDR3....no issues at all. I do have to change the sampling rate sometimes and put logic in “low latency mode” on some virtual instruments that give me latency issues...other than that, GGD runs just fine for me.

Set the raw sound as good as it can get, than export the tracks and mix them as you would do if they were recorded with real drums instead of coming out of a VI.
@jay1070
@jay1070 5 жыл бұрын
@@mvyper That's actually what I've been doing but in some cases the midi data wont even play 4 bars without overloading. Every other virtual instrument works fine except that one. That's why I've been thinking it's something stupid like a setting I missed or something.

9:00 that’s interesting considering high frequency content has less energy, therefore should it not die off quicker? Not questioning our lord and saviour but it just got me thinking!
@DTSEMusic

I think he talking about volume rather then resonance, or how quickly the sound dies. Also don't over look 'perceived' volume. So hi frequencies will have less energy but will be 'louder'. (Not sure this is an answer but it something to consider lol)
