'Nomadland's' Chloe Zhao Talks With Barry Jenkins About World-Building & Working With Marvel

Filmmakers Chloe Zhao and Barry Jenkins met as many indie directors do - hiding in the corner of a film festival party as their heroes and other luminaries schmoozed. It was in 2017 in Telluride, when Jenkins returned to the festival for which he used to work with a Best Picture Oscar for “Moonlight.” There he saw Zhao’s sensational “The Rider.”
Years later, both directors are solidified in a new wave of indie crossovers. Zhao’s “Nomadland,” a sweeping look at a generation of van dwellers starring Frances McDormand, is one of this year’s Oscar frontrunners. Jenkins is preparing “The Underground Railroad” limited series at Amazon. The pair met virtually as part of Variety‘s Virtual FYC Fest to discuss world-building, authenticity, and their massive Disney projects “The Eternals” and the “Lion King” movie.

I loved that part with Derek. My Uncle Dell was what we called "a Hobo!" He hopped train cars from the western states to visit us back east. He never married, lived out his life taking odd jobs, even carried around a sharpening stone and went door to door sharpening lawnmower blades and such for a little extra money. He was easygoing, kind, funny and I never saw him get angry. We all loved his visits. Derek allowed me to see my Uncle Dell as a young man. So, thank you for that.

I was skeptical but saw it recently and it is great. If youre an existential thinker like me then this film will make lots of sense to you. It’s also a gut wrenching look into aging, lose and purpose. Things that many of us are afraid of or currently experiencing and don’t know what to do.

The women who have been nominated for Academy Award for Best Director ...their movies are all great watch. Lina Wertmuller for Seven Beauties, Jane Campion for The Piano, Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation, Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker, Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird, Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, Chloé Zhao for Nomadland...all masterclass films. 11 years later , Kathryn Bigelow is still the only female director who has won an Oscar. This year (2021), for the first time two women have been nominated for Best Director in a single year.

I would put it down to going for talented low status directors not only because they are cheaper but because they are also more malleable to the wims of the studio and producers. They are not entrusting the budget to the directors, but the producers who manage the budget and assemble all the elements of the production Blowing up is just a consequence of their name being attached to a billion dollar grossing marvel movie

Asian directors are becoming a thing lately but not everyone is Bong Joon Ho. Can't say I liked the movie. Not all nomads are old, out of job, grieving, and have no interest. Many choses the life for the freedom to do things they love to do such as hiking, photography etc. The choice to use real nomads in the movie is also a failure. You clearly see the contrast in acting between the actors and non-actors. Also the choice to go with R rating instead of PG for single full nudity shot that doesn't do much... bad choice again.
@siiiiiuu7
@siiiiiuu7 3 жыл бұрын
I think your choice of wording is really odd. Asian directors aren't "a thing lately" and they're also not a monolith. Just because one Asian person makes a film about "A" doesn't mean every Asian creative that comes along has to be compared to "A". Asian actors, writers, and directors have been around Hollywood for a long time. They just haven't been given the same space as others to shine. Also, I'm all for having an individual opinion on a film, good or bad. However to nitpick about things like an R rating? Someone is fully nude. Urination on a road and defecation in a bucket are shown. Death and suicide are mentioned. What does an R rating have anything to do with the quality of a film? You seem like you have a personal gripe with the film or the director.
@thegrynne
@thegrynne 3 жыл бұрын
Once you tell a story with specificity-rather than treating a group or demographic as a monolith, with the same experiences and histories and feelings-someone will always come at you for the story you’re *not* telling, instead of the one you are.
@scottmead854

Your comments are so fraught with ignorance I don't even know where to begin. Asian directors a thing _lately_ ? Have you heard of Ozu, Kurusawa, Wong Kar Wai, Kore-eda, Park Chan-Wook? The film doesn't claim to represent all kinds of nomads. Of course there are all kinds of everything, a film is not a compendium or encyclopedia, it focuses on just one story. As for rating, it's not up to the film producer _at all_ , it's the MPA.
