Since this video, the RallyNavigator mobile app works on both Android and iOS and it works with any PDF file. So if you have a roadbook event people can all use the same app.

A really great video - thanks for that, the professional execution is really second to none! The whole subject appeals to me all the more because I have been professionally involved with roadbooks for many years as I offer motorcycle tours as a tour operator using roadbooks for navigation. Recently, however, the criticism of the anachronistic principle with paper, tripmaster and roadbook holder - everyone using its own hardware of course - has become louder and louder. This is a great pity, because in my opinion, the roadbook principle has by far the advantage over simply following a GPS track on the navigation device - especially when it comes to additional information or warnings. The development of soft- and hardware in the meantime is very promising and will certainly make me change my mind sooner or later. One thing, however, remains the same: the effort of creating a good roadbook not only requires a fair amount of diligence and precision, first and foremost you also have to know the relevant routes!
@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Proud to receive cheers and input from a veteran in the subject. This is so much fun but as you pointbout, also a superior way of navigating a fixed route.

Great tutorial Robert! There was a time, not thet far back, when our passionated ex Aussie Troy Safari Carpente arranged fun roadbook events like Coast to Coast in southern Sweden owing other events. As well together with SOE (Svenska Offroadentusiasterna) and the Dakar Princess Annie Seel, arranged a very sophisticated bake rally / race in mid Sweden. The first just to inspire to learn roadbook navigation and have fun. The latter very serious with seasoned contenders with ambitions to contend at international races, also an ambition to see if the Swedish Motorsport Association (Svenska Motorsportsförbundet) could be interested in supporting and arrange cross country bike races in Sweden. It seems very difficult to rise an interest for this from their officials though. With Your excellent influence the interest for roadbook rallys, at least for fun, could be raised again for advriders. Bukkerittet in Norway might be the last larger event and some in Finland may be the last of these events that have survived. For myself I've only tried this with paper rolls in a classic type of roadbook like 15 years ago 😂. Keep it up Robert, I will look in to a up to date solution 😁.

Nicely explained and you got me onto making and driving roadbooks as well now!! However i do find it a pity that drive mode dashboard 2 only works on the smartphone in landscape mode and the rally navigator app only works decently in portrait mode.. Until dmd2 can work in portrait mode or rallynavigator app in landscape..I now export the roadbooks in pdf and use the piste roadbook app on my android smartphone, which works on landscape mode launched from within dmd2. I love it.. and thanks again for the 👌 video

Dear Robert and friends, great video, lots of knowledge. But I'm not quote convinced from leaving Garmin Zumo. Just the right OSM map needed, much quicker to plan a tour from the PC at home. Of course, we all have to double-check in reality and ride the tour. Your Rally Navigator roadbook looks a lot like Dakar, that's ultraprofessional, and pimped-up compared to good old Garmin. So where's the real advantage except those nice tulips? Cheers, Günter
@NomadSweden
@NomadSweden 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Günther. Roadbooks are for rallies, as a challenge for navigating. A sport or a fun event. It is not to be compared with a Garmin which does not even do roadbooks. Still, it does has advantages since it contains detailed warnings and info about certain sections on a challenging track. Another commenter in this video does tours as a profession and use it for tracks that are re-used often, because of the detail. But, to make a route once and then ride it, you would never make a roadbook. Garmins are made to navigate with no effort. Roadbooks is the opposite.

@NomadSweden

Sorry for late answer. You have to scroll manually since most roadbook apps are using PDFs and don't know the distance for each instruction. There are other apps which could know distance, but they don't scroll auto either. Probably because it's set to imitate the paper roadbook.

As always, nice video! At minute 4:39 you say you record on your navigation app... what app is that? Thanks!

Pretty much any navigation app can record gpx-files. Guru Map, Locus Map, OSMand, DMD2 etc

Great video mate. Loads of good information. Did you explore possibility of connecting bluetooth media control? You said that there is a possibility but I'm not sure when it pair how it will actually work. Any idea?

Excellent videos, BTW! Also, could use a tutorial on how to connect a bluetooth music controller to Drive Mode for Android...and FYI, funny I have the exact same "extra" phone for my motorcycle-mounted roadbook...Thumbs Up!

@@Milwriter personally I have tested rallynavigator with player remote. I know rally blitz support it but not sure drivemode dashboard does.
