"Nothing Else Matters" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica. A power ballad, it was released in 1992 as the third single from their self-titled fifth studio album, Metallica. "Nothing Else Matters" was featured as a playable track in the music video game Guitar Hero: Metallica. Recognized as one of Metallica's best known and most popular songs, it has become a staple in live performances.
Lead singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield wrote the song (credited to Hetfield/Ulrich) in 1990 while on tour, when Hetfield "was bumming out about being away from home. Initially, the song was not meant to be released, as Hetfield had written it for himself, but after drummer Lars Ulrich heard it, it was considered for the album. Hetfield initially had reservations about presenting the song to the band: "I thought that Metallica could only be the four of us. These are songs about destroying things, head banging, bleeding for the crowd, whatever it is, as long as it wasn't about chicks and fast cars, even though that's what we liked. The song was about a girlfriend at the time. It turned out to be a pretty big song."
Metallica (commonly known as The Black Album) is the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on August 12, 1991, by Elektra Records. Recording sessions took place at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles over an eight-month span that frequently found Metallica at odds with their new producer Bob Rock. The album marked a change in the band's music from the thrash metal style of their previous four albums to a slower, heavier, and more refined sound.
Metallica promoted Metallica with a series of tours. They also released five singles to promote the album: "Enter Sandman", "The Unforgiven", "Nothing Else Matters", "Wherever I May Roam", and "Sad but True", all of which have been considered to be among the band's best-known songs. The song "Don't Tread on Me" was also issued to rock radio shortly after the album's release but did not receive a commercial single release.

Loved that Metallica showed their range by demonstrating they could compose a piece like this. Not my favourite Metallica tune but it does speak to me! Another example of a band diverging big time, check out Led Zeppelin’s Dyer Mker - that’s Jamaican Sound Maaannnn!!

One of the things I like most about James's vocals in this song is his annunciation. He hits them hard and is very precise; one could argue that's part of the production in making sure he does that, and this was the first song of theirs where I genuinely noticed it. I think that's a high point, even over the lyrics. As a long time Metallica fan, I loved this album when it came out, which is not something I can say about any of their subsequent releases. On the topic of ballads; have you ever heard "Our Farewell" by Within Temptation? It's not a complex arrangement either, but the melody is beautiful and Sharon's voice is angelic. It's the only song I've ever listened to that gets me in the feels, every single time... a watery eye. Perhaps it's my connection to it through life experiences, but it's well worth checking out.

If you the reader of this comment haven’t checked out when Sir Elton John told Metallica that the song was one of the best things he’s ever heard you should check it out. The moment James hears this he chokes up. It’s very emotional.

You just got a new subscriber. Ive wtched a couple of your videos now and i love the work you guys put into it. I was always confused by the 'fans' reaction to this song back in the day. I remember when this song hit the air waves and there was so many metal bands who were doing goofy cringy ballads but this song never felt like those ones. I think 8.1 is a pretty high score... Great work guys

I am a multi-decades listener of Metallica & I have loved all their work, what I can say if this has scored an 8.1, please listen to their live version Metallica & San Francisco Symphony: Nothing Else Matters (Live) - it is amazing; outstanding. I love produced album releases, but there is always something special about the Live versions, Nothing Else Matters is no exception. :)

James wrote the intro as he talked to his girlfriend in telephone., holding the phone with one hand and casually playing the guitar with the other. Thats why you can play it with only one hand.

Can I recommend a reaction to Gojira. In my opinion, they are the best Metal band of the past 25yrs (for me, ever, even over Metallica, sorry chaps). They should be a household name, they're that good, and rate Metallica as one of their biggest inspirations (they've supported them too). They are French (sing in English), Grammy nominated prog-technical death metal band - although their style has certainly moved to more groove and possibly post-metal sub-genres - with themes and lyrics focused on environmentalism and philosophy. Fantastic live too. Very hard to pick the right first track. I'd say it comes down to Flying Whales (their signature track) and The Art of Dying (prob the fan favorite). Coin toss. The latter is probably better produced and may score higher for vocals...

Very nice breakdown and analysis of this iconic song. I am currently learning to play it on the bass guitar. Not my favourite from Metallica either, but it deserves its status. Apocalyptica's rendition of Nothing else matters is something I would recommend, if you don't know it yet. In my opinion playing the whole thing on those beautiful classical cellos really highlights the elegance of the composition. I am admittedly very biased there, so take this opinion with all the salt you need.

I think it's a great song for the Metalica cannon, but up against other rock or hard rock ballads, it's good but nothing extraordinary. Every metal band had to have one. Maybe it deserves the Unplugged treatment to land harder. Metalica did a concert with the San Fran symphony backing them. Love how they expand and challenge themselves.

For me, the lyrics have always been the weakest part of this song. There are only around 8 different lines in the entire song (I mean, To Live Is To Die has almost as many lyrics, and that's an instrumental!), and those few different lines aren't saying anything that hasn't been said a million times before. I much prefer the lyrics of their other songs that either tell a story or have an important message.

In terms of an ‘emotional’ Metallica song, Fade to Black’s lyrics are much better.

I started listening to Metallica with Master of Puppets and wasn't thrilled with this album when it came out. Still not a huge fan of it. Don't really care for this song, but don't hate it either. The solo, played by Hetfield, was really good, but the rest is just meh. Unforgiven, from the same album, was far superior as a ballad. The score was fair, as was everything you said about the song.

Did he really say "earlier Metallica when they weren't even that good"? 🤦‍♂️ He has no clue that their first 4 albums are all considered among the best in metal history. Also seems unaware that there was a pretty harsh decline after the 5th album. This guy is all over the place with his reactions.

I liked their 90's stuff. My feelings weren't hurt by them changing up their sound and look...... if any other band had made their other albums they would've been praised as amazing, but because 80's metallica worshippers couldn't handle the change, they were labelled as bad albums.
