How many radio frequency changes should be expected when flying out of a busy Class C airport? If you were thinking at least 3 or 4, this flight will probably surprise you as much as it did for me. Ride along as I depart Fort Myers, FL (KRSW) for Naples, FL (KAPF) and see what’s different about this departure.

The key to flying is being flexible, flexible with ATC, your aircraft, your instructor, and most of all the weather. If ever in doubt you can always ask ATC

This is one of the most unique thing about aviation is that no 2 flights are the same. You always experience something new in-flight. I was trying to keep myself "current" with your radio comms, but I had the same reaction as yours when you got your clearance haha! Great stuff!

I was taught to just get your clearance instructions before taxing, once I give the read back, call back with ATIS and ready to taxi. most guys ask are you ready to copy, I just reply with standby until I’m doing the Run Up if I started taxing. If they are busy with multiple freq I understand they’re trying to give out the information as quick as possible but I would just say standby until I got to the run up area. I heard DPEs are strict with trying to write down things while taxi ing.

Great video and this covers something you won’t read about in all the literature we read as pilots. In ATC we can combine and de-combine positions as needed. This is largely depended on traffic and staffing. Following a hurricane, traffic is generally slower than normal and many times staffing can be limited. When positions are combined, we generally prefer to have everyone on 1 frequency as much as we can. This is why you were told to call the tower for clearance and ground. Conversely, we will also be monitoring all the other published frequencies. With regards to not being switched to approach, after take off - atc has an option to “point out” traffic. Basically the RSW tower controller called the radar room and gave your information and the radar controller agreed to watch as you transition to APF tower’s airspace. Point outs are at the discretion of the controllers involved. I know this is long, but this was a great video. Safe travels

When you were listening to the (Computer Guy) ATIS clearance, delivery and ground control were all combined on tower frequency. somebody called in sick and he was the only ATC working.

This is very Australian class C departure. They sometimes have combined ground and tower at YMEN airport and I have had them give my clearance while on the run randomly so I was thinking Jason you better have that iPad scratch pad ready. I think it's due to them putting your flight plan into the system and a slight delay due to that.

I fly out of KLAN (Lansing, MI) which is also a Class C. The last two times I have flown they have combined clearance, ground, and tower on the same frequency. Surprisingly, KLAN is not a very busy airport so I am not sure if that is the reasoning. I am surprised that KRSW combined the frequencies though.

That's funny. When you say "Grape" it sounds like "Strawberry", but we knew what you meant! 😊 Question: Is that puff of smoke at 11:20 normal? I don't know that I've ever noticed visible smoke from a healthy engine after it has warmed up. Maybe I've just not been looking!

Couldn’t you have asked tower for departure freq on your 8,000 foot taxi instead of waiting? You talked about it but assumed you’d get it on departure

So is it always required to call clearance for a VFR departure from class C airport? I was never taught to do that and flew for a couple years and never heard of it. Then I noticed random airports would want you to (but wouldn’t note that in the ATIS or chart supplement). Just looking for a standard here
@xenimaging
@xenimaging Жыл бұрын
I regularly fly out of a class C (my main airport) and it’s always been required. They always have it in the ATIS and the chart supplement also mentions the clearance frequency. I think that he made it a little more difficult for himself in the video though. Even when my airport shares clearance with Ground, I was taught to always start by calling clearance and stating intent. They’ll come back with your CRAFT info. Then call ground and request taxi.
@jbreezy101
@jbreezy101 Жыл бұрын
You must have two-way radio communication and a transponder to operate in D & C (you must be cleared into a B). Atis usually tells you about contacting clearance/ ground or say direction of flight.
@dillonroberts6399
@dillonroberts6399 Жыл бұрын
@@jbreezy101 Understood, but you're gonna be talking to ground and tower before taking off in Class C regardless. The Class C's near me don't mention anything about it on ATIS or the supplement which is why I'm confused.
@dillonroberts6399
@dillonroberts6399 Жыл бұрын
@@xenimaging Interesting. My supplement of course includes the clearance info because IFR flights are there but there's no request to contact them nor is it mentioned on ATIS. Maybe it's a regional thing? Rochester, NY expects it but almost any Class C eastbound at least to Burlington, VT do not. Just seems inconsistent. I've also gotten some confused controllers when I talk to clearance for VFR lol

I have always found you to be an excellent detail oriented instructor and pilot. But, two things which I saw which I think you should be careful about teaching 1) I got yelled at by a DPE on a check ride about letting go of the yoke... it was his position that you always need to have ahold of it and be paying attention even in light winds. 2) I think that it is an error to taxi and look&write on your iPad... this can quickly lead to disaster... certainly is a bad habit
@firepilot109
@firepilot109 Жыл бұрын
When you are IFR and been doing it awhile you have to know how to multi task in the cockpit, so looking away and doing other stuff, that is what your scan is for and he does a great job of it. Also no one holds on to the yoke all the time, except that DPE, lol You should def let go when trimming the plane out to make sure you have it set pretty good. Great job Jason
