How come bnr beads are 2x the price of Cleardrift beads when they’re the same thing ?

Bnr have a pre made hole in the middle of the bead unlike its clear drift counterparts and comes with an effective T-stop to keep the bead from sliding. essentially paying for convenience

@@ItsMikeLearnsim on the fence of doing this, might be fine for springs but i feel like coho can be really picky and can see the hook. And yes, when they do bite, its a better hookup when the bead is on the hook, just wondering if it will lower the amount of takes

The fish will not be startled by the sight of the hook. Having the bead on the hook is not an issue for bites. Losing the bead once the fish is on there, is an issue.

Your videos are giving me the itch. I’ve not fished this year due to my knees getting so bad 😢I just can’t walk the distances or manoeuvre the banks anymore it’s so frustrating being how much I enjoy the sport . Those fish are amazing though,congrats on a successful day out .

I was there as well, just further down. I got 5 coho and 1 spring on prime silver/chartreuse spoon. Two hatchery coho about 6 lbs. Very nice fish. It's been good fishing, not sure why everyone is grouped together down there. There's tons of spots not being fished.

Awesome video! Just out of interest why do most people in BC run mono line on their float setups? Down in the states we run braid and then a mono bumper.

Quite a few anglers would run braided as main for their float fishing setup in BC actually. I have tried it, but personally I didn't like it and using 15lb mono as my main is still the way I like it.

Hi Rod. I caught a fin clipped spring on the Vedder. Is the hatchery clipping some springs? I remember there used to be a head return protocol for fin clipped springs because they were tagged and they wanted the heads back for data. Is that still in place? Also any info the genetics of the fall return Vedder chinook "White" vs "marbled" vs "red" flesh? I caught all three but there seems to be a lot more reds and marbles around, at least when I caught my fish which is early in the run, last two weeks of September. I tend to get my limit and rarely take springs in October so I don't know if the reds and marbles are as plentiful later in the run. I definitely prefer the reds for flavor but white tastes good.

The hatchery clips about 10% of the chinook salmon, but that will go up in the coming years as the program is changing. Two hatchery stocks of chinook salmon exist in the Chilliwack River, and they both were introduced. The summer run is red, and the fall run is mainly white. In recently years we've seen more reds mixed in with the whites throughout September. The mechanism behind this shift is not really known, but I'm sure no one is complaining. :)

As always, I absolutely loved your video and will continue to enjoy them. However, could you possibly release this after peak season. The crowds on the Vedder are getting ridiculous, even mid-week. I see people,especially elderly people being squeezed out of their spots and few have the ability to hike through the trails to find quieter spots. It seems that some of these people have been fishing for 10 or 15 years and more. Anyway, just my thoughts. Good luck this coming weekend.😎😀

Rod don't care, he's in it for the money. He is part of the problem, the river is only gonna get worse and social media is a big part of that. There are way getter places to fish, long as we keep them off social media. Let Rod and his 15 million cousins have the vedder river.

@@Darryl58 Totally legit questions, no worries. The tide and how it influences the fish movement in the canal is something that I am still constantly learning too. Just when I think we got it figured out, the fish surprise us everytime.

I notice you didn't use tranx much lately, is that because of the weight? I have a curado as well and love it, but I am curious how that compares to tranx?

The Tranx 300 is a really powerful reel and I tend to only use it when I am targeting chinook and chum salmon only. It's bit of an overkill for coho and a bit on the heavier side too. If I am fishing for smaller fish, the Curado 200 is great, or even the 300 is a bit lighter than the Tranx 300.

That would make things too easy Carol. 🤣 I mainly use that net because it’s the easiest one to carry on my back. From my experience, we don’t really have extendable landing nets in our market that I’d consider good enough. These wooden ones float on the water too, which makes it easier to retrieve at times.

The canal turns on and off based on the tide, so you don't know until you try it.

I was with my nephew fishing a hole full of springs. We weren't catching anything, but a group of older fellas were constantly on them, mostly foul hooking with long leaders and too deep a set. One of the guys had the gall to try and explain to my nephew how to do it.. They clearly don't think they were doing anything wrong, unreal.

Yeah unfortunately, when the river gets a solid return of chinook salmon, combined with low water conditions, this type of behaviours becomes pretty common. Hopefully videos like this with an emphasis on how to do it correctly will help new comers.

Rod.... been looking at all sorts of chest waders and almost all have good comments and bad comments... and every one of them in the bad comments talks about leaks and failures fairly quickly. What chest waders do you use and do you recommend any?

Yeah unfortunately leaks will always happen regardless how much money you spend on a pair, but a lot of it comes down to how much you take care of or abuse them. I wear a pair of Simms G3 Guide waders which honestly are the best I've had. They are really comfortable, light and at the end of the day you won't feel tired. I've had this pair since January 2019 and so far no leaks here, but I also baby them a lot, by avoiding bushwacking, or taking my time to walk through the forest if I do have to etc, and cleaning them regularly after fishing.

The first salmon to come back in the spring are chinook in late April early may hence the colquial name springs or kings in USA all chinook salmon

For chinook salmon, there in fact aren’t any wild fish (for this time of the year anyway). This chinook salmon stock is entirely produced by the hatchery and unlike hatchery coho salmon, most of them are not adipose clipped. So the short answer is that yes you can keep unclipped chinook salmon.

That's correct, from the Vedder. Generally, only hatchery marked coho salmon can be kept, but every river system has its own regulations so best to double check.

It’s just a habit that has stuck with me for the past 40 years. I can also do left hand retrieves, but this is the routine that works for me.

Hello rod I have just started salmon fishing a large river. I already have an 8ft 6inch okuma celilo medium action 8-17lb line rating. Would that be sufficient for king salmon fishing.

Yep that setup is totally fine. It of course would also depend on the size of chinook salmon you are catching.

@@FishingwithRod I'm not sure how big they are but pretty big. Could I catch kings on a 12-20lb medium action spinning rod with 2500 size reel. I put 30lb braid on it with 17lb mono leader

2500 is a little small for chinook salmon, but it'll do the job once awhile. Over time it may be a problem. 3000 would be better. I use my 2500 reels for coho salmon and occasionally will bring in chinook salmon, no problem with that. Your spinning reel is good for what you want to do.

Shimano technium is a cheaper option? You have been really spoiled with gear because the Shimano clarus is a high end rod for most people 😂

Cheaper… not cheapest. 😉 Shimano Clarus has been discontinued and the remaining inventory at the local stores are now for sale at great prices if you can still find them. compre will be the new series to replace Clarus and IMO those are the rods to get for anyone who is just starting out and intends to try for a couple seasons. Technium would be one step up but IMO if you are upgrading, just jump up to a E6X, IMX. They are so much nicer for a bit more 💴.

Nobody should get spooled, it's the worst thing that could happen to our waterways when several hundred yards of line end up in them. Whenever I feel that I don't have control of a fish that's too big for my setup, I usually choose to break off instead of letting it take all my line until I might lose it all.

None of them are biting…. It’s a technique called lining or “ganking”. The fish are visible, almost dead and gilling hard….. in two feet of water. The egg is to float the hook some and make it visible so you can tell when you’re leader lays right in their gaping mouth…. Raise the rod and whamo….. you snagged one right in the mouth. Hope it spawned already…. Which it why it spent its life to get there. You guys are studs!

@@thomasszeman9663these fish are biting the soft beads. That's how it works. Obviously there is the random one that was accidentally flossed. But you don't floss with a short leader and a float.
