Non-Stop Fall Wiper and White Bass Fishing Below Two Different Spillways (Wiper Catch and Cook)

I visited two different urban spillways and found some wipers and white bass stacked up in a fall feeding frenzy. I kept a few for a wiper catch and cook.

Since the DNR stocked so many wipers it should good in the next year or two - should be seeing lots of close to DD fish - no doubt.

No, I see a lot of people put a montage like that in the middle of their videos (sometimes several) to break up the monotony or add a transition. I like Jay Siemens and he uses this style a lot. People tend to skip through something like this if I put it at the start but not if it is in the middle. Yes, I'm lucky to have a chance to fish this river a few mornings each week. It's crazy what is swimming around in there. Thanks!

Thanks, I think the drone gives a whole different perspective and shows how cool the train bridge is. It's interesting there is a lot of air traffic in this area - especially helicopters. I have to be very careful when flying and bring the drone down at the first sound of an aircraft. This spot has been on fire for the entire fall but now the water is getting cold so fishing has started to slow. Fish tacos are definitely one of my favorite ways to eat fish. It's a good mix of flavors. Thank you!

This is exactly how it was when I went that one day. They were just everywhere and biting the moment the bait hit the water. I wonder why the DNR decided to stock over 5 million wipers this year. Looks like you made the guac pretty good, a little surprised you used Corn Tortilla, most white friends I know use flour tortillas - A+ Taco Catch n Cook!

Ya, it was like this for about 2-3 weeks. They usually stock wipers at the fry stage so they are counting on a lot of mortality.

Those were some really nice white bass, especially that close to 3 pounder you had! Also, the wipers looked like a pretty decent meal. Great video!

Thanks, that was probably the biggest WB I caught this year. There have been a lot of 2+ in the river but close to 3 is more rare. The wipers seem like they were probably stocked last year. In 2 years there is going to be a lot of 7-10 lbers swimming around.

"Guac-ey" is a word. At least it is now. I appreciate the action and the catch and cook. White bass are good eaters if you remove the red meat like you demonstrated. Great content, as always.

Yes, guac-ey is a word. Don't ask google just take my word for it. I've been eating a lot of white bass lately and they are growing on me. Not walleye or crappie but still good. Thanks!

How can you tell white from wiper?

The only way to be 100% sure is to check their tongue. A wiper has 2 small tongue patches in the back of its mouth and a white bass has 1. That being said, I was IDing most of these fish by appearance. Wipers usually have very dark lines while white bass have weak faded lines. I've gotten used to identifying the fish this way so it is pretty reliable but I would never recommend this to someone who is not used to IDing them this way.

When the fish are very plentiful, and the sport fishing regulation permit, Keeping a reasonable number of fish should no longer be considered a “bad thing”. I come from the older generation of anglers and have lived in remote places, and a time when bag limits were a “suggestion”, and very generous. One example is, Speckled Trout 2 Dozen(24) in one day, and a two day possession. Even as a kid I disliked this because some of the better anglers could hit my local stream, and remove all the larger fish for that season, and probable kill as many “released” smaller fish. When I keep fish today, I take into consideration if the fish are plentiful. I keep fish that are injured. The fish I release are not handled, and will likely survive. I am so thankful to all the Anglers out there who don’t just “ Belly flop” fish back in the river after letting them bounce around in the bottom of the boat, or on the rocks. THANK YOU to all the real anglers who make sure the fish they release live. Thank you to the Anglers, that are capable of wiping out a Pool, but leave the pool the way they found it. It’s because of the new generation of sport anglers, that many kids and all people can go to a river and catch a fish and enjoy a sunrise. I don’t think the good guys get enough acknowledgement and respect for the fantastic sport angling we still have in North America. Videos like this , and others are good examples of why we still have fish in our rivers !

Well said. I think a lot of people are starting to realize that if they want to catch more and bigger fish then they need to be smart about when and what they harvest. Some of these areas get so much fishing pressure that the fishery can't survive without at least some catch and release.
