I heard this song a month after I got my first apartment following a bout of 6 1/2 months of homelessness resulting from finally deciding to leave an extremely toxic home life. It carried me through the following few years of residual trauma and struggles with addiction while trying to balance a full time job and graduate highschool. Anytime I found I was losing myself I would go for a walk until this tape was done and it was like I was starting fresh from that point. My worries for the week would almost be forgotten. Last summer she came to Ottawa and performed for a crowd that could mostly care less who she was (naughty by nature and Blue Rodeo were after her so it was a weird mix) aside from maybe 15 other people that I could see who were there for her and yet she brought this energy and love that you could tell she won most the crowd over by the end. (That is so rare, ESPECIALLY WITH OTTAWA CROWDS.) She walked off stage after finishing her set and I accepted that I wasn't going to hear one of the song that saved my life but still had one of my favorite concerts to enjoy (chance and Kanye came two years before, who are two other artists who have assisted in a lot of growth and that festival is low-key how they met so shoutout the 613 for that). 5 minutes later she comes back giggling realizing that her set wasn't done and had time for one more (she had smoked a blunt before the show and forgot lol) As soon as that first chord hit I screamed a noise I never thought I could make and she looked at me with the biggest smile and never took her eyes off me as I rapped her whole verse back to her. In that moment it felt like it was just me and her and I could feel the joy and astonishment she felt seeing this 6'3 lanky ass caucasian screaming her verses back to her like he was watching someone perform Bohemian Rhapsody at a karaoke bar (apparently that's a thing we do.). I have a lot to still figure out but progress is being made everyday I get out of bed, and the days it's a little harder to I put my earbuds in and close my eyes as this song plays and go back to that moment for 5 minutes and remember that feeling I had in he front row of that crowd. Thank you Fatimah for one of the most genuine unspoken interactions I've felt and for one of the best live concert experiences I'll ever have. I was there alone but it didn't feel like it - Dave

The day my bearded dragon died I kept singing the hook to him hoping to take his pain away even just for a bit. "Bless the nightingale, darkness keep you well", seemed so appropriate. His beard was usually black from all the pain he was in except for someone would sing to him or hold him; it would get all white, but only during those times. I didn't know I would lose him until we took him to the vet later that day and we realized he wasn't responding to the meds as much as we were hoping. A piece of my heart & soul left me and went with him that day. I believe strongly in a songs ability to send messages between this life and the next. When I hear this I know my buddy knows how much he is missed. I never thought I would grieve this hard for an animal but that little guy opened up my heart so much. May he rest in painless peace. We tried our hardest and I hope you know we didn't want you to go but you were in too much pain. Tell my brother I love him. Ill see you both when the time comes.

I’m convinced this is one of the best rap songs of all time. Everyone killed it. It’s so soulful, the instrumental, the acoustics at the end. It all sounds like it’s one big jam session / freestyle with friends. Its lively, sounds like a “first take” type thing. It’s so fun, but the lyrics have a sad tone to them about the death of people, shootings, etc. Its amazing.
