In this Cities:Skylines [Campus DLC] video you can see a noob, pro and modder building a Downtown / City Center. The noob has no mods and isn't that good in building things in C:S. The pro is better and the hacker has a modded game with move it, road anarchy and Traffic Manager: President Edition.
Mods you can find here:

This video is honestly just confirmation bias. Shoving a whole bunch of tall buildings/uniques doesn't automatically make a better skyline. Nor does relatively small highrises equate to a bad skyline. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder which is clearly misunderstood in this video.

Why Tall Unique Buildings work great in Downtowns. The reason people like to use tall uniques is for two reasons. 1) The tall adjective makes them fit better in downtowns because those are almost always where the tallest buildings are. No one puts a 300 meter tall building in the suburbs, because it would be very out of place. 2) Tourists. Unique buildings are tourist/visitor magnets, and unique buildings mixed with zoned buildings, especially offices, creates the whole 'hustle and bustle' vibe that downtowns often give off. Also, more people will take public transit to clusters of unique buildings, which makes it more realistic. As far as roads go, I'd say it's about 85% realistic. I usually use two one-way four lane roads (found in the workshop) right nezt to each other going un opposing directions as a central concourse through downtown. Said usual concourse is great for handling traffic. And two lane roads are also literally all over downtowns, as some people don't realize.
@EnDSchultz1
@EnDSchultz1 5 жыл бұрын
True, grids of two-laners do get clogged quite easily though, especially with so many intersections to the arterials. I tend to prefer a sort of inverted flowering pattern of branching roads that get smaller as you go further in, resulting in minimizing the number of intersections on the arterials, and pockets of offshoot alleyways that terminate in dead ends. I will then link these dead ends to the main roads and each other with pedestrian walkways to still make it easy enough to move around the local area on foot. My cities would be nightmarish to navigate in the real world but thankfully Cims are omniscient when it comes to spatial awareness.

Ok let's investigate the last layout: - No cycle paths - No public transport or irrelevant (so it seems anyway) - Little road hierarchy (mixing and seperation of fast and slow roads) - Way to many intersections - No roundabouts - Would be extremely dangerous in real life - No pushing high traffic underground - No nice walkable downtown - Boring city center - No compact - Seems like a city without history - Traffic issues all over the place

The simple fact is a beautiful city takes some work, creativity, and compromise to get right. Also mods are pretty damn indispensable for me, although it is possible to make do without. Biggest thing I've discovered is to give up my obsession with min-maxing land usage. Stop feeling like it's a waste if every last tile doesn't have an oversized max level growable on it, or if a sensible and pleasing road doesn't have a bunch of perfect spots for 4x4 growables. If you let the game do its own thing without taking control and limiting building growth, then you'll end up with an overcrowded, hyper-dense Hong Kong like abomination every time because of how land value works in the game. My urban centers are mix of pretty much all the tools: ploppable RICO for oversized functional assets, landmarks, plopped and random growables for filler, and manually filling in the awkward janky bits with pedestrian paths and green space.

I'm a weird combination of Pro and Modder. I use modded assets, but I generally just zone and grow rather than ploping buildings directly. If I do plop buildings they're generally either custom services (generally landmarkafied versions of service buildings, like the Chicago Women's Hospital Rehab Center instead of the vanilla hospital) or landmarks. I don't like to plop growables since I tend to stick to the more management side of things rather than design.

especially with cities skylines it is hard to tell which build is "good" or bad, since it does not have a "right" or "wrong". in some cases e.g. traffic, or fresh water, the game itself punishes the player for being stupid, but especially in look and in the freedom the game gives to build whatever you like, the game is awesome. everyone should play it as he likes, and there is no right or wrong. And to be honest, "hackers" Skyline appearance is more "trololo" than "uuh lala" hacker, and even pro would have prop anarchy on and would be able to build also on buildings. btw, pro and hacker did a crucial mistake (noob also did but hey, he s noob): all of them forgot to rebuild the metro station, without one the downtown is definetly a no-go ;)

The modded looks good but it kinda takes away from seeing the buildings develop. It would be nice to see what kind of buildings you got after placing some of those high profile buildings. Just my opinion though

That road system is seriously cringy, and residential areas complain about noise when you put them right next to dense commercial buildings. I like that you put in paths, but I really don't like that music.

It's like a plague spread around all youtubers who do Cities Skylines. The taste in music they chose for the videos is just damn awful, but i guess there are licensing issues to consider so not many of them will take time to consider more than one royalty free music source :)

For me downtown is basically a business and entertainment hub with some high and expensive residential areas (green dlc area) for specialists and their families, offices (IT cause they're tall), hotels for business trips from outside the city and your other areas such as suburbs, "small towns" with industry, entertainment and "special" buildings and sort of transit hub. I never dezone a square for it. I usually grow my city first and industry in the area. Then i start growing transit hub and downtown around it (offices, entertainment, hotels and high rise landmark buildings in a place which can handle traffic. But i build around industries and people need to get to work somehow and they prefer to work somewhere not too far from their homes. And they need all services and other things. So i usually have several downtown areas. One is huge and other are smaller.

I like to spend less time thinking about it so I would just build around a Central Park like New York or big boulevard surrounding landmarks like Paris then generally zones them. Spacing out areas for small parks helped with land value and allow zones to grow into higher level buildings. My only issue is I have to find prettier services buildings to match the look of the area.

majority of modders are noobs with more tools at hand, nothing else! if you can build a functional, beautiful and realistic city in vanilla, that is impressive!
