Noomi Rapace fell in love with the character of Lisbeth from the Millennium Series novels, so when she was offered the chance to play her in the film adaptation, Noomi made sure that she remained loyal in her portrayal, to the point that she held the script hostage.

She is absolutely right. The way she bottles up the hurt and doesn't let anyone in is exactly why Lisbeth would never "explain" herself in a monologue. So smart. She made the movie a gritty, badass gem!

Rare my ass. The vast majority of actors, if already famous, could care less about fame. Now treating films as business rather than art, that's a different matter. Many feel, as a matter of professionalism, that "everyone on the set has a job and it's simply mine to play the character as written on the page."

@@progressreggae Agreed. And I have no problem with an actor having strong feelings about believability of dialogue or character motivation, but flat out refusing to do a scene based on her own reading of the novels (not the script!!) is far beyond the pale. You're not filming the novel, you're filming the screenplay. Would imagine she lost some future work because of this idealistic silliness.

If that's all you've ever done then I can see why you feel this way. @My name is Steve Rogers I would more put it this way, if the person in charge asks you to do something you don't agree with, you either roll over and do it anyway, leave or speak up and risk being fired. All of these options is what she faced in the moment just like anyone else who would be put in that situation at work. Granted, most bosses would not be so lenient, but hers was.

Now THAT is an actor who understands her responsibility. She knew a one-page monologue chronicling Lisbeth Salander's history was inorganic to good storytelling and to her character, so she put her foot down. Even after filming was over and GQ was honoring her portrayal of the character, she didn't succumb to expectations. I'm so glad she and the director decided to rework the scene together...I think that made all the difference in the final version of the movie.

I quite liked both versions, although they are very different. The Swedish movies are totally faithful to the book, and I loved that, and Noomi was great as Lisbeth. The American version was more glam and slick, and perhaps worked better as a movie on it's own, if you were not familiar with the books. Rooney played a much more vulnerable Lisbeth, she was good too, but it's definitely not the way the character comes across in the book.

@jay Noomi wasn't being a harpy. She stayed true to the book and the character. Having recently rewatched the Millenium movies I was still so intrigued of Lisbeth's character. We didn't need to know her backstory during the first movie. It only became revelent in the sequels which delved into it. Spelling it out to the audience would have been unnecessary. Bjurman's treatment of Lisbeth tells us everything we need to know about how and why the character behaves the way she does in the first movie.

@Flim Flam not for me. I found her portrayal boring, completely stereotyped, weak and pedantic which was far from Lisbeth's character. I think the most telling part of how Lisbeth's character is revealed in the film is the scene where Blomkvist says "I want you to help me catch a killer of women". The change in her body language is so subtle it would be easy to miss but it shows so many things. She is immediately converted to Blomkvist's cause but at the same time it shows that he has read her and that hits her vulnerability. To me it showed a whole team in synch with what they wanted to achieve; actors, writer, producer and director. It filled in a huge part of the backstory, it was superbly set up with Blomkvist playing the "illegal" card as a threat and then backing off to gain her trust and then her acting absolutely nailed it.

I fell in love with her after watching that movie too! She was so badass and fragile at the same time you just wanted to protector in that movie and hearing her loyalty to the character is really impressive. Not many actors would put their jobs on the line to be truthful to a character like she did. Wow, love her even more now!

Wow, what a woman. At first the interviewer keeps interrupting her, but eventually she just blows him away lol. She's just as uncompromising as Lisbeth!

The fist time I saw her in the movie I felt that she created this strong character and took it on her own to made this character the focus of the story. And after listening to her story here today, I was not that far off. She is a lovely lady. Good luck on future films.

I'm really impressed by the commitment..... To have both the interviewer AND the actor to turn themselves into colorless humans is amazing!

She isnt overlooked because of a lack of acting talent. She is passed on because she refuses to do her job. Thats what this interview explains. She is a disagreeable narcissist.

Wow, I'm SO glad that she didn't explain that. The movie was so powerful BECAUSE of the sub-text, mystery and nuance of the character.

That was the very first movie I ever saw of Noomi Rapace & loved her as a actress since. None of the American version remake could ever even come close to her original character of Lisbeth Salander. She hit it right out of the ball park.

This is a good lesson. It takes a lot of courage to be right. When you stand up for ideals, people in power will try everything they can to make you back down.

This is something that most actors do NOT have; professional integrity. It doesn't even exist in Hollywood. Actors will do whatever they are told to do, no matter how established and successful they are. American cinema has given her nothing but schlock to work with. Interestingly, she once said she would never come to Hollywood and she, clearly, didn't keep that promise...but she should have. This film will always be her best role, sad to say. She is very talented...flamenco fire, flaring out of every pore.
