The circuit is 37 miles, and the major races are 6 laps. It's huge over here. For bike riders (from many countries), it's like the most important annual religious pilgrimage to go to the Isle of Man TT

If I am not mistaken, this event has tallied more deaths than any other race event out there. Primarily, since if you do crash, you are hitting non-movable objects like walls and buildings most of the time. HUGE guts required if you run this event. Glad you checked it out.

Current death toll at IOM since its inception in 1907 is over 260. This year Peter Hickman averaged just over 136mph for a 37 mile lap, Hicky has a couple of onboard videos with a helmet cam which gives you an idea as to just how accurate the top riders are and the physical toll it takes to ride at that speed on public roads. I don't have a link but I have watched a video on KZfaq about the history of the IoM TT.

That 132mph was an average lap time. One lap is 37 3/4 miles. Just think about that for a second. Averaging 132mph when some corners are taken at 20mph. So how fast...over220mph. With a rear tyre contact patch the size of the palm of your hand. These guys are gods.

I'm constantly amazed by how many people have absolutely no concept whatsoever of just what average speed even means, these same idiots use motorways with average speed cameras on them and think its ok to do a hundred - just as long as you stand all over the brakes before the camera and trundle through at the posted speed - then floor it again till you spy the next one, they have no idea whatsoever HOW they got caught, Ive tried to explain it to several people in the past and been met with blank looks of miscomprehension, average speed cameras take an image at your start point at camera one and then again at camera two, and if for example both cameras were exactly one mile apart then a speed limit of 60 means you will trip camera two in exactly one minute if you were doing sixty - if you were doing sixty for a quarter of a mile then up to eighty for half a mile - then back to sixty as you passed camera two....it will calculate and record your "average" speed as in excess of seventy MPH - and then YOU my freind are nicked.

There is a rather good "documentary" here on KZfaq, that combines a bit of the history, the racing itself, and a bit of the "insanity of why we do it" all into one, i think you'd enjoy that and get a whole lot more context on this particular (unique) race. The isle attracts a different kind of racer, the ones who are willing to live on the razors edge when racing, they are a class apart to say the least, and they know the dangers all too well. And they put that all on the line for 1 prize, the honor of winning and putting your name on the list of winners of the Manx TT.

I've been twice and your heart never stops racing. more people watch from the roadside just because of the rush you get from it. you'd be amazed at the number of lives that have been lost there. My now 88 year old Dad goes to the TT every year.. Since the early 1970s.. He has lost 6 close friends at the TT over the years… There are many classes of bikes and riders run the gamut from self financed to Factory supported.. It is epic and emotional when a rider dies mere moments after going past you at 200+ mph.. it seems so thrilling until that point.. and then if feels so ridiculously irresponsible only seconds later. I stopped going after a guy I really admired died on the course.

The Isle of Man TT is run on public roads, which are closed to regular traffic for the occasion. The circuit is approximately 37 miles in length, and pretty much covers the entire island from start to finish. The Senior TT, which is the race involving some of the most ferociously powerful motorcycles, covets 6 laps. Now, bear in mind that because this race isn't run on a racetrack, there are no runoff areas if a rider makes a mistake. Instead, get it wrong, and you will hit a high kerb, a tree, or a brick wall. On some parts of the course, you can pull off this feat at 210 mph if you put your mind to it, or more correctly, what will be left of your mind after you've suffered a 5,000g collision with a solid object. Riders take this course at virtually full tilt except for a few places with hairpin bends. That's while astride a motorcycle with over 250 horsepower to play with and 170 kg dry weight. These machines are, in effect, two wheeled Exocet missiles. The *average* speed along the entire lap is around 137 mph. On parts of the course, the riders are exceeding 200 mph, and will take sweeping bends at close to 180 mph. Just being able to hang on to the machine at that speed takes serious physical fitness, and the reaction times needed to race are up there with fighter pilot reaction times, or in some cases even better. There's over 200 corners to remember, and you have to take every one of them at speed with millimetre precision to win. On some corners, the lean angle is greater than 45°. If you want an idea what it's like from the rider's viewpoint, on board camera footage exists. The footage recorded when Michael Dunlop set a lap record is worth viewing, during which you can watch as he catches up with the helicopter filming the race. That footage is eye watering to watch if you're not used to seeing top motorcycle racers gunning the throttle while banked over at over 45°. Needless to say, some riders occasionally make mistakes. The consequences are not good. The TT has a dark history of fatalities. Look up Michael Dunlop's record lap and watch it. That's a roller coaster ride.

I first went to the Daytona 500 in 1998, and went 3 more times over the next ten years, plus dozens of other NASCAR races. When I first went, you could walk right up and stand at the concrete/chain link barrier then separating the track from the crowd. Less than a foot. If you watch any NASCAR racing, you see how close to the wall the cars get. Where the gate to the driveway to the infield is, it was only chain link. You could get so close to the cars doing almost 200mph down the final stretch, the tires hitting the cracks in the concrete…thwap, thwap, thwap…the roar and vibration of the engine, the wind, the flecks of tire rubber flying, the smell of oil. All just right there, so tangible. Literally, I guess. If you put your hand out, you’d lose it. 😆 Everything is different now, for safety. Distances and barriers have increased. It’s still cool to get ten feet away, but not nearly the same.

1:52 - The bottom of Barregarrow is an interesting place because there's a dip inside the corner and the bikes' rear shocks bottom out right when the riders are turning. As you can see at 8:12, that can potentially unsettle the bike. 5:27, 5:43 and 8:35 - These clips obviously aren't from the TT. Some youtubers think that they can insert clips that have nothing to do with the video title and hope no one will notice.

My wife had an aunt who was a nurse all her life, and had seen what a crash on a motorcycle could do (many times over the years) and often wondered why anyone would ride one, the wife and I rode many thousands of miles over the years- when I met her she was riding a Honda CB 900 of her own-we also at different times also rode BMWs, Harleys, etc. at one family picnic the aunt had consumed a bit of barley pop(not drunk, just a bit less uptight than usual) and opined that she might like to take a ride someday. Before she could think, her brother had the wife's helmet on her, and she was on the back of my Goldwing(large full-dress touring bike -think 2-wheeled Buick) and I took her for a nice long, sedate ride over some country roads and on return she said she finally understood why people loved it so much. I no longer ride due to physical issues, so a Corvette convertible is my stand-in for a bike.....

When I was young (teens to early twenties) my brother and I were Drag Racing (on the track not the street, street racing is not drag racing) We started with pure stock car (mom's car) then got something to modify to go faster. We went to a speed shop and asked an older gentleman how fast we could make it go, he asked us how much money we got cause speed cost money. He was so very right, each step up the ladder of speed cost more and more. When we got to the point where we could not afford to go any faster we got out of it. But it was a blast while it lasted.

Isle of Man riders are the most insane, courageous guys, Peter Hickman did a 136mph lap this year, on a bike you could basically buy from the shop. Each lap is 37.72 miles and has 300 corners. Top speed would be just over 200 mph. The senior TT is 6 laps. MotoGP is a whole other level, they ride closed circuits but the bikes are insane. Mugello this year the max speed was 363.6kmph, which is 226mph. Seeing these live is a must at some point because video just doesn't do it justice.

There are a couple of Documentaries on the Isle of Man TT that are really good, and put it into a little more perspective. There are I believe an average of 4 deaths per year at the Isle of Man TT. This includes racers as well as spectators. This is the oldest, and hence the longest running Motorcycle Race in existence. Yes they traverse most of the island during a lap going through open countryside as well as going through towns and villages along the way.

For spectators read mainly everyday bikers trying to emulate their heroes when the roads are open (Mad Sunday). Also total fatalities recorded also include the Manx GP and the Classic TT.

You are right about that little voice in the head of motorcycle riders telling us to go faster. The one problem I have that I never thought would ever become a problem is being completely desensitized speed. 130mph feels like 60mph to me and it’s a struggle to control myself every day going into work

Yep! The MotoGP riders talk about how they have to get readjusted to the speeds after a break (I think they're pushing 220+ mph now). When I got my bike up to 123mph on the front straight at Virginia International Raceway, I immediately started thinking about what I could do to go faster - it's never enough. It's a passion. I never try to talk someone into the sport, but I make sure to show them the skin grafts that cover the titanium rod in my leg.

I have been to that MotoGP race in Indianapolis that you said there doesn't look like many spectators. Many of the spectators are in the infield because the track goes through there. Attendance was around 80.000 if I remember correctly.

It is insanity but I'm still in awe of the people that seek that level of adrenaline rush. Had a neighbour who died racing at the age of 50.....I still can't fathom speeds up to 200mph on those roads

You should watch a history of the race. Oldest motorcycle race in the world, 1907. 37 mile laps on public roads, 267 deaths since it began. 5 this year. 207mph top speed, average 137mph.

This race has been going on annually for over 100 years. There was one year in I think 1982 where nobody died. Other than that, at least 1 death every year but usually more. Main reason being that it’s a street circuit, walls, buildings, trees. Almost everything is immovable. Also no run off areas; if your bike has a mechanical problem and you can’t slow it down, you’re history.

It’s not just Isle of Man TT . There is a lot of video footage from the Northern Ireland road racing scene which is why you are see 10/20 bikes instead of 1 or 2 on a time trial like the TT.

That feeling of something like a good bassline combined with excitement; motorsports has it's own special zing that it brings for those of us who are bitten by it. The TT is somewhat peerless, beyond even Le Mans for some of us - they aren't there for the prize money, fame (outside the superbike niche) or a World Championship. If they aren't humble when they arrive, they usually are by the time they leave the island. Anyone come to mind when thinking of a cocky TT rider? (genuine question..)

The video you watched presents IOM TT very mildly. The turns, corners, elevation, present a challenge to anyone. The over 25 mile course presents a challenge to anyone trying to anticipate the next turn/drop/wall. It is the most dangerous motorcycle race in the world. Backers of the event have walked away. It is not a sanctioned event. It is awesome for the few who choose to accept the challenge.

The reason why it is legendary is it is not done on a race track so all the safety mechanisms are absent. This is done on ordinary streets with buildings and other things and that’s what makes it dangerous so only the bravest of the brave attempts it

Maybe take a peek at one of the on-bike camera videos of a circuit? I enjoy cricket (used to play village level), but would not recommend anything other than a 'best of' compilation (best catches, etc.) as even a 'quick' game of T20 would be 4 or so hours long!

My dad was a biker and i love them too people say about the risks but there is a certain feeling of freedom you get from the air against your chest that you don't get in many other vehicles and you feel the power of a good 4 stroke it doesn't really compare the risks become worth it not met that many folk who don't show their inner child when they hear one or get the chance to rev it
