Wanted to add my recommendation to watch Internet Historian's video on the Costa Concordia disaster. It is incredibly well researched , informative and highly entertaining. Just his ads ( yes I said ads) alone are hilarious. It is a great example of edutainment.

They are very long videos compared to your usual content, but I think you would REALLY enjoy Internet Historian's content. Specifically "Man in Hole" and "Cost of Concordia"

I dropped a whole footlong subway sandwich on the floor once. Didn't even manage a nibble. Still reeling from that 10 years later.

My most expensive mistake was writing a single sentence to my mother in an argument back when i was 17. This sentence would send her over the edge to where she would take her life in the following hours. She never got to see my 18th birthday just 2 months later, she never got to see the 2 grandchildren that she would have now, she will miss the weddings of her three children, she would miss guiding her daughters through motherhood and miss out on the 30+ years her clock still had to run. My nephew who’s 8 pointed at a photo on my wall just last month (10 years later) and said “Who’s that woman holding mummy?” Yes this was by far my most expensive mistake

The Costa Concordia ship disaster was a event that defiantly could have been avoided. I wont go into it because The Internet Historian does a video on the whole scenario which I found to be one of the most entertaining videos I've ever watched on KZfaq and I highly recommend anyone curious about why it was off course to view that video. It's almost like a novel or movie purposely written with such a deep rabbit hole that it will blow your mind lol.

I have only been watching reactions for a couple of months, in this time i have come across Tom McDonald and really enjoy seeing what people have to say, there are a few that sink their teeth into it a little but mostly superficial - this morning I came across your "The System" reaction... I must say, You are a breath of fresh air, not to make a dig, but... I have gotten so used to empty and shallow statements and conversations over the last several years that I had given up hope with the younger gens of being able to correctly articulate and convey meanings of any significance or relevance to issues of importance or, even some simple topics. When I was 15 I was allowed into the adult section of the public libraries in the UK. I loved the collected editions of American Short Stories, about 8 volumes I think. It was there that one writer always stood out even amongst the most famous names, and that was Joyce Carol Oates. A master of the genre.

First of all, Im loving your content and your chill demeanor. My short stories recommendations would be 1) Isaac Asimov's Nine Tomorrows (especially that first story "Profession"), 2) J.D. Salinger's Nine Stories, and 3) several of Philip K. Dick's short stories are thought provoking.

Aww, you're super sweet. I'd forgive my spouse too. 50 years is a long time. That's already a blessed life. The lottery one also reminds me of when I was a kid. I collected Pepsi bottle caps and cutouts from boxes. If you collected the words "As" and "If" you would win a Jeep Wrangler. I had won several things already but I was storing my "If" bottle cap and repeat words in a closet. I finally got "As" and I rushed home after football practice to tell my mom that I'd won her a Jeep. She was so happy, we were freaking out and getting ready to call in. I went to the closet to grab "If" and everything was gone. Turns out my dad thought it was trash and had tossed it all before work that morning. I've obviously never forgotten that. I bought her one later but... damn. Dad didn't know though, he worked 12 to 16 hours a day. It was easy to forgive him.

My mistake didn't cost me money, but was surely a cost of an interesting experience. A friend of my fathers was an archaeologist. He and his family had came to or house for dinner during a visit (they were from overseas) , and while at dinning he offered to take me on a dig with his team. I was 17 at the time, and I decline the offer ... DOH!

I'm always playing the "trying to be the first one to comment only to disrupt others who for some reason want to comment first" game and thought I'd switch things up this time and actually say something appreciative about your content. #4 hits home (literally and metaphorically) for me as I grew up in the bay area and even worked in nob hill @ a coffee shop named Saint Frank. I remember the new portion of the bridge and how long it took to build. I ride motorcycles and it's a major way I experience the world. Riding over that bridge held special place in my heart as it is quite beautiful, memories to go visit my girlfriend at the time. Unfortunately she was killed by a distracted driver while riding her motorcycle to work early one morning in late 2018. Ever since then I refer to SF as the city who ate my fiancé and now reside in Santa Barbara. I enjoy your intellect and pursuit for more perspective. It reminds me of one of my favorite activities; getting lost. I get to see things I wouldn't normally when I get lost just like watching your content in how I get to see things I wouldn't normally.

I love how the coast guard in charge bawled the costa concordia screamed at the captain who had evacuated already, calling him a coward, a scumbag, all sorts of things and ordering him onto the boat until everyone else was safely off.

the problem with controlled burns is that they have to occur regularly, at least once every few years, and they have to occur under perfect conditions, low wind, high ambient moisture, but the underbrush still has to be dry enough to burn off. it's hard to get that sweet spot, and you definitely should not do them in high wind during drought years.

That Rogan Podcast you mentioned is one of my favorites he's done. David has been on several times and man, that dude has lived a crazy life. He's so chill and humble too. Great dude.

The Justice League Snyder Cut was MUCH better than the 2017 theatrical version. I didn't notice the mustache; will look closer the next time I watch the blu-ray. I agree on the choice of Chernobyl being the worst. That was a true disaster in every possible way I can think of.

While I don't like short stories myself I have a lot of friends liking them. One suggestion would be Spider Robinson. It might be a bit difficult to get hold of his books but they are definitely worth it.

7:10 I was stationed in Guam when this happened. I had gotten back from deployment and was on two week R&R, so I wasn't at work when it occurred. Instead, I got a call on my phone as I was about to do a hash run that I was not allow to talk on the phone about what happened. Of course my response was, "what happened?" Dispatcher replied with, "um...I can't say over the phone, but don't talk to anyone about it." 😂

The reason for the explosion at Chernobyl was not due to the reactor being run at full power it was a result of a design flaw in the RMBK reactors which caused a power excursion when the safety control rods were lowered. This is known as a 'positive void coefficient' where the very thing that is supposed to reduce power causes a brief but massive INCREASE in power which in this case was catastrophic. This flaw was known about but not conveyed to the operators or well documented, had it been, the accident would have never happened.

The tsunami was not avoidable, but the meltdown of the nuclear power plant was - all they needed to do during design was to set the emergency generators supplying the cooling system at a higher elevation, a relatively very low cost item, the tsunami would not have knocked out the emergency generators, the cooling system would have kept working, and the meltdown would not have occurred.

The Ron Wayne one is not worth thinking about, it assumes jobs wouldn't have found a way to take the shares away from him. Considering Wozniak was out of the company 10 years after starting, with no shares, I highly doubt Ron could have kept his shares to this day

The bomber doesn't really feel like a disaster to me. The video makes it sound like the technicians weren't communicating properly, but remember this is the military. They can't do anything without permission. This was an issue of someone further up the command chain deciding not to report an issue higher. If the sensors can get gummed up by humidity, what about pollen, ash, or snow? This disaster had no fatalities but brought to light a serious issue that led to massive design improvements to newer models. Sure it cost $1.4 billion, but it probably led to tens of billions of improvements long term.

For Superman I think they purposely did a bad job to try to set the audience against the actor and use that as an excuse for the atrocious script and directing.

I recomend you Isaac Asimov short stories, "The last question" is a good starting point.

The captain of that cruise ship, not only deviated from the route and putting the ship and passengers in danger, that is not what landed him with 16 years in prison, no.. he did something even worse, not only did he ignore all safety precautions, he also was one of the first people to jump into one of the life rafts, and lied about leaving the passengers behind. His first priority was not to save the passengers, it was to safe himself. A true piece of.... you know what.

if you haven't read Luis Borges do so, he has plenty short stories, mostly magic realism. If you have read him and liked it maybe Alejo Carpentier's the kingdom of this world, which is also magic realism about Haití and pretty good.

Most expensive mistake? Spending years investing my time and energy with criminals and performing criminal activities at a very young age in order to fit in. In some ways I'm still paying for it decades later. I guess one of the most taxing parts is the realization that you're not the only one that it has and will effect.

My literary recommendation is “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” by Mitch Albom. It’s a short book so I guess that makes it a short story lol.

The entire Littoral Combat Ship program. It cost the Navy BILLIONS, the ships ended up being nearly useless as combat vessels, cost WAY more than projected to operate & maintain, and, started falling apart due to some serious construction flaws. 17 of the 35 ordered hulls have been delivered, and, the Navy has already started decommisioning them.

Part about claw that was found in Pripyat and how it could kill you with a single touch is a heap of nonsense. Depending on the spot measured inside of the claw emits anywhere from few hundred µSv/h to 1-1.5 mSv/h. Not even remotely enough to get you sick even if you stood by it's side for a few hours let alone kill you in a single touch.

Cruises freak me out as well, couldn't do it. I even worked with a marine biologist who is quite famous and a family friend from middle school through college. I took the helm on ships and zodiacs many times, went through rough seas and storms, but something about being not in control and just a number on a cruise ship really freaks me out. For an on-sight update RE Australian NBN Internet...
