Sadly airlines have created part of this problem because of them loosing our luggage often. They have lost trust that our luggage not may get from point A to point B. Then offloading can be a bit slower. People just want to get off and get going.

Craziest bin fight was over 'artisan' bread. 3 ft bread took an entire bin, and the woman was adamant it could only be used for 'her' bread because it was artisan. $15. My husband got up, put the bread in her lap (yes she was squawking) he loaded the luggage and then put the bread above it. As she spooled up to start screaming, he gave her that look he has. Agreed! Honestly? This is the one thing that I don't like about this channel - I know most of the time, the tips are within the rules, but I do feel like it's taking the piss (to use a Kiwi term) a bit, when 'normal' travellers who check their luggage and just take *one bag* (and an actual appropriately-sized personal item, like a handbag) are disadvantaged because there's not enough storage space with the massive carryon luggage everyone seems to bring - I just feel like the advice to use carryon only is a bit irresponsible, and is perpetuating the problem. Carryon should be for things you need in-flight, and emergency items if there's a problem with your luggage. I would like to see less posts about how to fit everything into carryon, tbh 😕

Airline employee here. We crack down because the FAA fines airlines for not keeping passengers to their baggage policy. Each airline is different and the FAA holds us to it. It has to do with safety as it pertains to weight and balance. Each ticketed passenger is an assumed weight based on that airline’s policy. (Winter weights are heavier). Based on ticketed pax, the computer that is responsible for take off and landing creates the plan. If weights are off it can be bad news. So please stick to the sizes and please don’t sneak on more. I recall travelling from Kuala Lumpur for a 1 week trip recently, coming across a surprise luggage checkpoint just ahead of passport control. Showed my boarding pass, airport (not airline) staff made it clear "one carry on bag and one personal item bag only, max 15lbs weight for both". Anything above that weight, I'd be sent back to the check in desk to check the bag. My underseater and sling bags were weighed, which thankfully came in at 13lbs 😎🙂.

There are ways to not pay bag fees. I've flown for many years and rarely, if ever, pay for bag fees. 1) Fly an airline that doesn't charge for bags; yes, they exist. 2) Airline status or loyalty programs - some employers offer status as a perk for some airlines. Plus, if you fly often enough or earn status through credit cards, you can get free bags. 3) Airline credit cards - If you fly more than once a year on the same airline, the fee for the card more than covers the bag fees you'd pay. (Free bags are often a perk). Airline cards also help you earn the aforementioned airline status. 4) Buy a higher class of service 5) If the gate agent asks for volunteers to check bags, they will often waive fees. Learn to do some homework and become a more educated traveler. Use the system to your advantage.

I was even asked once to remove my little bag and put it under the seat, which I refused to do because I paid for my ticket just like everyone else did. I think there should be storage allocated for each seat so even if I am the last one on the plane, I know I still have a spot for my carry on. Baggage policies should be clearly posted by the airline and they should be enforced.

I carry a mesh bag for the few extra items that will fit under the seat, but I never buy huge souvenirs anymore anyway. I do remember way back in the early 70's when I flew coast to coast with a Wok, and had to jam it in the overhead between some softer items. I'll never do that again!!! I took plenty of flights lying across five seats and sleeping all the way from LA or the East Coast to London. And Charter flights from Stansted were a thing back then, long before RyanAir. Passengers were clean in the bathrooms back then no matter how drunk they got, and I never witnessed any altercations or belligerence. @@DoReMeaCulpa Do you think people would be doing it if the airlines charged the baggage fee as part of the ticket? Or do you think people would be doing it if baggage fees were reasonable? They're not, by the way. In many cases they are more than the ticket itself. For example, if a Ryanair flight that would cost €60 without luggage included (1 reasonably-sized carry-on that is adequate to store small clothing items, toiletries, etc. for a short trip to the sun + 1 small item purse/sling/shopping bag/pillow) now cost €100 but with the luggage included, and Ryanair were strict on the size and quantities of these bags, would people be complaining and trying to cheat the system? Or another example, if a Ryanair flight cost €60 without luggage fees but had an optional luggage fee of €10 for the aforementioned bag quantities/sizes, would people be complaining and trying to cheat the system? How many would risk it for €10 on a €60 flight? I know myself I would just pay the €10. But as I said, it's never just €10. From what I can tell, the reason for the frustration and adoption of 'cheating' and 'deception' is because airlines themselves are being 'deceptive' and are 'cheating' the customers. They advertise low fare airline tickets, but then squash you with needlessly difficult booking procedures and baggage limits. The whole process from these companies is a deliberate attempt to manipulate consumers. That's why consumers are rejecting it and finding loopholes, in my opinion. Not because they're selfish or dishonest but because they are being manipulated and won't stand for it. Change the system and the consumers might change with it.

@@petek5523 That's exactly why I chose them. It's about consumer's perception, and that's the whole point of my comment. If a flier is paying €60 for the ticket and €10 for the baggage versus €30 for the ticket and €40 for the baggage, what consumer is not going to question the legitimacy of that and try to find a way around it by steadily increasing the size or quantities of their bags? It's common sense. The customer would pay the exact same amount, but in their mind it's completely reasonable and par for the course. The whole system is broken. It manipulates consumers into paying more than what they think is justifiable. But take away the ambiguity and the frustration of overpriced baggage fees while increasing the cost of the ticket to ensure airlines earn their wages, the issue might just disappear.

I wear hiking shorts with many zipper pockets and I carry an Igloo brand case that acts as a personal bag that goes under the seat and becomes a beach cooler when I get to my destination. This has worked out perfectly for me and I never put a bag in the overhead bin and it’s easier for me to board and deboard. I just brought home a lot of ceramic and glass from Mexico and I wrapped it in bubble wrap and put it in my checked bag and one special piece of glass art in my personal bag. I wear it cross body at the airport, take it off and bury deep in personal item going through security. After going through security, I put it on like a waist pack and pull my loose-fitting dark-coloured tee or sweater down over it. Bag is now invisible but still accessible. It stays there until trip is over. I use it as a daily carry while traveling, though my passport and spare credit cards will usually be in an under-clothing security pouch. Great tips…it really depends on the gate agent! We had a duffle bag filled with Garrett’s popcorn that clearly fit into the personal space bin. Las Vegas American Airlines. She refused and said it’s a duffle bag..therefore a carry on not personal item. If it was in a shopping bag it would have been fine! Told her we do this every year with the popcorn. She wasn’t hearing it and wanted us check it! So we gate checked our carry on luggage filled with worn clothes….no way was I going to check the popcorn.. It would have came up missing for sure! So we get on the airplane and the overhead bins were empty! WTH?

I recently purchased an expensive Briggs & Riley Carry on. I was debating between the domestic 22 inch and the International 21 inch. And even though i fly domestic 90% of the time, i chose the international size. Thinking for the price of this bag, i wanted to make sure i could carry on , on every airlines. Or even if the domestic airlines started getting stricter. I even have two different personal items. One intl size and one domestic size. They're less expensive than luggage, so i didn't feel bad about buying two. Another thing i bought was a SLIMMER style sling bag that fits closer to the body. It holds as must as a small crossbody purse, but i push it to my back and wear a jacket over it. So it's not visible.

Always a terrific and pertinent video. If they want to streamline and speed up boarding, they could just board from the last rows forward. My problem is in my carry on I need to carry a computer, bunch of batteries. None of this stuff is supposed to go in checked in bags. I think without my Nikon ~5 lbs (2 kg), my carry on has been 32 lbs (14.5 kg). As I approach check in or the gate my main carry on is a roll top dry bag, so I roll it down really tight. I also make sure the way I sling it makes it look easy, so the assumption is it's not that heavy, and keep it behind me. I was almost dinged on a ferry because out of curiosity while waiting for my clerk to come back to the counter I weighed my carry on. Another clerk spotted it, scolded me... I started to explain/complain. She gave up, let the other guy decide. A ferry. In Vietnam I was dinged by a truly malevolent clerk. She made me take everything that couldn't be checked out of my blue roll top bag, put it in my light weight day bag. The now checked but empty blue bag weighed 2 kg contained a book, some paper, almost nothing. My bulging Montbell bag was still overweight but allowed. What I take away from your video for my batteries is: be polite, but firm, explain that all the weight is batteries and electronics which can't be checked... and promise I'll be quick, stow it anywhere on board the attendants want, and mention that I always help other passengers with their bags. (I'll pull out the Montbell bag which has what I might need during the flight and leave my bigger carryon in first class at the front of the plane. )

Thanks for sharing, and for distilling it down to your personal takeaway! It sounds like for you it's more a matter of weight than size, as the batteries are compact enough that I assume your bag(s) fit in the sizers no prob. So indeed, I think your takeaway is sound :-)

In Australia we have a 7kg limit. Even with 2 bags it all must be 7kg. A couple airlines allow you to pay for more weight but with the recent flights I’ve been in I’ve seen so many bags that are way over weight. Then last flight I was at I saw a person going through their bag and they had so much unless stuff (they were doing to Sydney for 2 days and they had like 7 days worth of clothes!) People need to pack strategically and not “I might need it later.”

How is this only just happening in the US? Airlines have been strict about carry-on baggage in Europe for decades, including one carry-on bag only (no personal item, unless you're travelling business class). Some carriers even have a stricter size limit than standard for carry-on items. When I was travelling a lot, I used a lightweight backpack within the dimensions for carry-on luggage. No wheels and telescopic handle means more weight for clothes etc. A backpack is better than a shoulder bag because it distributes the weight across both shoulders, so there's less possibility of back trouble (from personal experience). And if you're at the gate with a backpack and it looks within the allowed size and doesn't look overstuffed, it is less likely to get weighed.
@NoraDunn
@NoraDunn 3 ай бұрын
Great points about the backpack Jerry! That said I do find it hard on the back to lug travel backpacks around on travel days. Schlepping through too many airports, connections, public transportation, etc is a pain - literally! But if I'm going ultralight or traveling for a short time (ie: less then 2 weeks), then I will often bring a backpack.

I flew with my mother 2 years ago. We paid little for Spirit Airline. The normal carry-on I used to travel now an inch taller than required. My mother carry a bag of knitting stuffs and her carry-on. We ended up have to pay extra $$ for the both carry-on. Later, we paid another $150 to extend our trip. When we rode the bus to the airport, we missed our flight. So we have to pay to get the return tickets. We also paid one extra for carry-on on the way home. That trip cost me original $350 to $2000 for 2 of us. I just came home from 2 month trip to China. On the way home, I was worry my luggage might be overweight. So I put on 4 heavier pants, 5 long shirts, and wrap the big jacket around my waist at the Check in gate. After got into the airplane, I took them off and put into my expandable carry-on bag, which I purchased from TEMU. I do wish we can ride bullet trains or subway like in China. You can carry as much as you can into the train and only take few second. The trains in China always earlier or on time and fast.

They pulled luggage from the overhead bins and 5 people in the back of plane had to come retrieve their carry ons…idiots. Then the crew checked each overhead bin asking who owns this on, and so on….more people came from the back of plane. Getting off a plane is so tricky when people have to go towards the back to retrieve luggage that did not have room near their seat…this was the smoothest de boarding ever.

Personally I would be a bit worried about investing in a max sized- carry-on case, because if the allowable sizes change even a little bit, it will be considered too large. Also if I'm not mistaken, the Monos carry-on Plus is sized for US domestic airlines but not always international regulations. You might want to take a peek at possible destinations you might fly to in the years to come and glance at their allowable sizes.

As someone who needs to carry medication, and this medication often uses a whole bag. I cant put it in a checked bag because the medication needs to stay cool, and if the checked bag gets lost (which they often do), that leaves my life literally at risk. So im already limited to 1 free carryon bag due to this. Even if i could pack my medication into a checked bag, inherently i am unable to pack just as much as everyone else. If they change it to just one carryon, i think there needs to be mandatory (not “hopeful”) allowances for people that have medical bags. Its already inherently unfair that everyone else can have two completely empty carry on bags to fill up, and I often can’t. If it becomes only one bag I may as well not take anything with me.

The most annoying thing about carry baggage for me is when someone else has stuffed their bag into my bin causing me to have to go use another bin. Ultimately these penny pinching tactics are only going to make cranky travels even more irate. Considering how common it is for people to become whiny babies on a plane anymore, I really don't see the point in adding extra obstacles that are going to instigate these actions. Your carry on should fit in the over head space allotted to you that's it. The weight factor really bugs me because why should I be limited to say 20 lbs when many passengers' body weight alone is more than my body weight and carry on combined!
@NoraDunn

So very common. I have sat frequently in rows 1-10 early boarding watching entitled passengers bring enormous oversized suitcases and trying to stuff them into the overhead compartments above my head! When asked where their seat is, it’s invariably Row 36. How is this permitted? Then a family of five arrives to sit behind us and have nowhere to put the baby’s diaper bag or the kids personal items or Moms backpack, forcing them to place their possessions down in Row 20’s overhead compartment. Twenty minutes later, the parents are still clogging up the aisle as the kids clamor for their toys and Mom needs to change the baby. Time is money and the AIRLINE is losing big time. All because nobody checked the idiot in Row 36’s bag.

The problem is that a lot of people do not want to pay for baggage. They get on board with two huge items and never place one under the seat. Checked baggage rarely (I mean very rarely) is lost. I have been a frequent flier for many years and never had one thing lost. When I first began flying, they actually had me place my carry-on in a sizing container to be sure it qualified.
