Martial arts can be a very healthy and exciting addition to your life but be sure to choose your martial arts school wisely.
You’ll want to do your research ahead of time and figure out exactly what you want to get out of your martial arts training. If you take the time to find the right school, you’ll be able to meet all of your martial arts goals.
If you’re choosing a martial arts school for your child, visit the school alone first. Take your time to observe a class, inspect the facilities, check the schedule, ask questions and meet with the instructor. Bring your child on a second visit to attend a trial class once you’ve decided the school is acceptable for your child’s needs. If your child comes on the initial visit, they may get excited by something like big trophies or watching a high level class and want to join the school before you have time to do the proper research.
At the end of the day, the instructor and their teaching style are a huge factor in choosing the right martial arts school. Ensure you’ve found an instructor who you are comfortable with and who helps you meet your goals.
Remember, if you are new to martial arts, it can be very hard to adjust to the pace of the entire class. Before you join, make sure you have flexibility and endurance.
Be wary of schools that guarantee you will reach a certain level or belt rank in a specified amount of time. Also be careful of schools that offer higher paying options to advance through the levels faster. These schools may be scams that are more focused on making money than teaching proper martial arts.
Remember that trophies, certificates and belt ranks do not mean that someone is a good teacher. It’s easy to get blinded by an instructor’s credentials and mastery of their martial arts style. But it’s much more important that you connect with them as an instructor. Take the time to experience a trial class with them and ask them questions about their style, regardless of how many martial arts competitions they may have won.

The tips you shared not only help find a good Taekwon-do school, they can also work on other schools. I had similar ideas when I was searching for a good martial arts school in my hometown, and luckily I found a good one. I also researched some of the other martial art schools in my town to check if any of them are proper schools or not, and it is a mixture of good ones and bad ones.

WT is exclusively the governing body for KKW Taekwondo as a sport. ITF or Kukkiwon (KKW) are the actual martial art. So some schools that are WT (formerly WTF) exclusively teach the sport and advertise it as martial sport and not a martial art.

I think TKD is a beautiful art, but I don't like how many schools have students sign contracts, and also the high prices for training. I believe in paying on a month-to-month basis, but at a price range that is reasonable. I feel asking students to pay upwards of $70/month makes me believe that the school is a McDojang/McDojo. Great channel and content! Pilsung!

True. Unfortunately and sadly why so many people have lost respect for TKD. There are so many McDojos just handing out belts or have little to no credentialing or just for money. Not to mention many see TKD as unpractical for a real fight or street fight where flashy kicks are ineffective or get you killed.

Not just TKD but Karate and Kung Fu and all owher martial arts can be a McDojo if the owner is not a real, trained professional. Sadly. This is why you have to recognise and distinguish the good ones from the bad.

As a TKD black belt from once upon a time, I can say the only way to avoid a McDojo is to NOT study TKD. I started in a real, old school TKD dojang. But, the focus became business instead of martial arts training. Schools kept watering down and watering down to the point that the curriculum was distilled down to nothing. My own included. No practical self-defense training, no practical training on HOW to fight. How to think strategically and couple that with effective tactics. I switched four times, and eventually I stopped completely because there was no longer quality of instruction or of students. Belts were just given away. Three years after everyone starts they get their black belt. They're happy customers but terrible martial artists unworthy of the rank. Just search KZfaq. There are countless videos of "black belt" tests and demos that are embarrassing to watch. Sadly, that's indicative of what you'll find in most any TKD school with VERY rare exception. Students of yellow or green belt skill level wearing black belts. Every few years I look again, and it's the same crap or worse. "Black belt" means nothing anymore. The people wearing them may as well have just bought a black belt online for $10 and skipped the lessons. They'd have just as much skill as they do now, but more money in their pockets. "Instructors" should be ashamed.

I am sorry to hear that you had such negative experiences! It is sad and ridiculous at the same time. Similar when they give black belts to children, it does not make sense. In Hungary, the black belt exams are very difficult and challenging! But I hope that you have managed to find a good martial artist school and keep on learning and practicing! when i started in 2006, brown belts had to squat walk everywhere for an entire month in the summer while being humiliated and shit tested during training to make sure black belt candidates (as we called them) really wanted to take the test. once ready, the test took almost the entire day for only 4 candidates, who were not allowed to speak of what they had to do during the test. my good friend told me only about one part where he had to be blindfolded and block attacks from all sides, finishing with sparring every master of our dojang.

Good video Nora! I love your channel. I was going to ask where you are from. Yes I’ve noticed TKD in other countries are more legit and real. Here in the US they’ve mostly become McDojo’s sadly. It’s great for kids or for fun but not to use in self defense. This is why so many have left to go to MMA, Muay Thai kickboxing, Boxing, or Kav Maga. Or even traditional karate 🥋 to obtain better tough training and experience and be more effective in a real fight.

Pretty much all WT dojangs teach sparring, poomsae, self defence, breaking, etc. Sparring isn't the only part of WT taekwondo, despite it being in the olympics. For example, I compete in poomsae.

ITF has several competitions around the world. Both local and international, like the world cup, but no, it is not part of the official summer Olympic games. Only WTF/WT Taekwondo is part of that and only sparring competitions. I am not sure how you qualify for the national team.

How to find a good school considering being a higher level belt? One school I have noticed focused exclusively on speed while another made up their own Poomsae. I recognize it may be hard to find dojo’s during the pandemic but post-pandemic time. If there is a good dojo then I would be willing to pay more but I am going to be pickier at finding the right one having done it before. WTF and ITF sparring and poomsae may be slightly different but the basics I.e. white- green belt still remain the same.

What are you saying? WTF taekwondo has become a sport for children and youngsters in all aspects , completely abandoning the martial aspect, especially from the inclusion in the Olympic Games. Of the martial aspect, only the poomsae remain. After the age of 35 you become completely useless if not as a referee or instructor. For this reason and not having traditional Taekwondo gyms nearby I switched to Kyokushinkai Karate

It's hard for me to tell if the dojo I go to is a mcdojo. The place I go to has a youtube channel it's call Rami Elite here's the link: kzfaq.infovideos the place looks real to me and is very very strict and classes are about 2 hours long. the reason I say very strict is because if the instructor notices anything wrong in your form he will make you restart from the top or just punish you. This place is pretty cool, and I like it and I hope it's not a mcdojo.

Does everyone take generally the same amount of time to get a black belt? For example, what if you are ablee to grasp things quickly or have prior martial arts experience--do you still have to wait a certain period of time to rise up in the ranks?
@NoraTKD
@NoraTKD 3 жыл бұрын
That is a very good question! If someone has prior experience in martial arts then that person might be able to grasp things quicker therefore learn faster and perform better. They still have to pass the exam with their current knowledge of that martial art. This generally applies if someone comes from a similar martial arts style. For example, if someone did Karate and is a black belt that person would not automatically get a black belt in Taekwon-do as the moves might be similar the techniques are not but that person could start at green or blue belt level and work up from there (so not from white belt). However if someone goest from Karate to Judo for example, they might not even get the color belt as the styles are totally different from each other. Again, this all depends on the master of the martial arts school but yes, generally people who practiced other martial arts can quickly learn the basics. Now the problem is to master them and not "go back to the old habits".

I'm about to become a black belt with only 4 years which feels weird because I thought it would take longer. But my teacher is a two times Korea national champion from when he was 19, now he's really old. Is this a McDojo? Because there are some people telling me it is.
@NoraTKD
@NoraTKD 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I hope it is not a McDojo, but unfortunately I cannot tell you that for sure. I think that the minimum is 6 years to receive the black belt in Taekwon-do depending on whether one goes to practice as often as possible (2-3 times a week) plus does extra practice and actually understands the martial art itself. Not only phisically but spiritually and the historic background is important as well as to know what technique is good for what and when and why. Check if your school is officially registered in your country and in the international Federation (if it is ITF Taekwon-do). Make sure that your achievement are officially recorded. For ITF TKD we have official diplomas and ID cards when we receive the black belt (and the dans after it). Anyway, the black belt is not the end of your martial arts training, it is just the beginning and the belt is just a symbol or more like something that helps to keep your dobok closed on you. What you know and practice are what matters. Mastery is the key.

Watch the difference in students in martial arts that practice sparring routinely compared to the student that knows all the forms but limited sparring. I will take the student with the sparring experience everytime. Be wary if the students act like their sensei is some living god or can kick everyone's ass in the world, that is a cult and walk out. Your club has to have sparring(I know I stress that alot) Martial arts is fighting, pure and simple. It is on the student outside of the gym to hold it back or know when to use these disciplined techniques when necessary. BJJ schools have the best mentality with this , so what you are a white belt but you can roll with the brown belts and black belts every night, you can roll as a white belt for ten years if you want. Once you learned all the elementary chokes you can test for a yellow. Spar, spar spar. It is the best martial experience and puts your technique to the best use.

What seems lost in all this is the ability to assist others to become martial artists. Knowing how defend one self is merely one facet, yet we don t hear about the wellspring of capability that is unearthed. A martial artist can heal just as readily and that is why martial art cannot grow here in U.S.A. This culture has a skewed conception of what constitutes a true complete martial artist. I see the same thing with Yoga. People are applying ancient principles within the model of the modern world and are accessorizing the true by this.

@@NoraTKD It's hard to share that what is within us needs to be perceived more directly; martial arts, yoga, meditation are distant things in this world today. Distanced by distractions looming every day, around us. Over time they become us. Mc Dojo is a new term for me and while it is humorous on the one hand, Began to question the scope of all the respective arts leading to similar ends, cos the practitioners are buying their way in. Kali Yuga, knowledge is scattered, not collected. This is difficult, personally to accept.
