It's been about thirty years since I've done this climb. It was about the only road bike climb I've ever struggled with rear wheel traction on, especially since the surface is often wet, and I had to zig zag the steepest parts. Fun video, thanks for posting.

I used to have that mindset too, but I actually think my fitness improved when I got an expensive bike because the gears go higher and also I'm now more stoked about riding on long bike paths, so I do it more often, whereas long distance riding used to be not nearly as fun on a budget bike. There's something really irritating about people passing you while giving way less effort than you just becausse they have better bikes than you. It made me feel really discouraged, and that feeling can ruin a workout.

Fun video, but I feel like I missed something. What was the point in having the climber on a 36 pound bike? Seems like everything that happened after that was, if not irrelevant, at least predictable. On a 7kg bike, the climber still wins handily, even with a dropped chain. I have clearly misunderstood something.

When you drop a vchain you don't have to stop. Overshoot in the opposite. Direction where the chain was dropped. Gently pedal until the chain ring picks up the train. You can practice this on your trainer.

Crazy power and fitness. I found a local 500m climb that looks like an exponential curve, maxing at 18%, on my ~32lb dual sus MTB with 32-46 gearing, and I almost had a heart attack by the end of it. I’m interested to try it on my ~19lb road bike with 34-34 gearing and see if the lighter weight but harder gearing can see me up it. I don’t like the thought of having to unclip on such a steep segment if I fail!!!
