It was a beautiful time for me when served as Radio Officer, including onboard M/V California Pegasus/3EPB6, a Japanese Container Vessel who frequently calling European Ports from USA, Canada and The Far East in around 1988-1996. Thank you for Land Radio Stations who help our job, both in Telephony mode and CW. Love from Indonesian R/O.

Hi, thanks for the interesting post. Did you work at DAN around 1979/80 when the Dora Riparia/IMBW collided with an Argentine vessel and both set on fire? Although it occurred in the mouth of the Weser, the Italian vessel could not raise DAN on 500. Naturally, this was not DAN's fault but a problem on the vessel caused by moisture saturation of the aerial insulators in thick fog. I later served on her in 1981 and recall wondering how she came to have what were clearly brand new bows. Reading back through the radio logs revealed the details. A coincidence was that the RO was a native of Melbourne, which surprised me as I had assumed I was the first Anglo sparks to join her (I'm British, Marconi 1972 era, later worked VIS, VIM, VIP), however, I now live in Melbourne. Incidentally, the vessel in distress in the video is not German. The Philippines register was allocated the DZ series (hence the 'Santamaria' name). 73s OM

In commercial radiotelegraphy we used QRK (1-Scarcely perceptible, 2-Weak, 3-Fairly Good, 4-Good, 5-Very Good.), QSA (strength (1-Bad, 2-Poor, 3-Fair, 4-Good, 5-Excellent.)) and QRi (1-Good, 2-Variable, 3-Bad.). So the tone would be QRI2. In amateur usage, the T in RST was purity of note as in power regulation, T9 was like it was generated using pure direct current. A letter K for key clicks, C for chirp was added, and additionally X was given when the frequency stability was like a crystal controled transmitter. So you might say they were 589C or 588C, a T3 would be a rough poorly filtered AC supply. Raspy!

Don't forget the transmissions on 500khz were not CW, they were MCW, i.e. modulated A2, not A1. The chirpy stations were Spanish. Also, the distress message in this video is just a mock-up. The format was wrong (QTH should be first) and the morse too perfect for a Philippine ship in distress!

@@richardwakeley2192 transmissions on 500 kHz were permitted in both CW (A1) and MCW (A2), Most of the signals on the recording are CW (A1). The distress message is specified both in ITU treaty, International Radio Rules and in (1949) United States Statutes at Large , Volume 63, Part 2, 882 section 14 (1) The distress call must be followed as soon as possible by the distress message. This message comprises: the distress call; the name of the ship, aircraft, or vehicle in distress; the particulars of its position, the nature of the distress, and the kind of assistance desired; any other information which might facilitate the rescue. (Note no particular order is specified.) I have no idea if the SOS is a recreation, but at a major coast station such as Norddeich Radio, certainly logging tape recorders were in use just as they are in use by our USCG radio station. You will hear two of those actual SOS recordings. The quality of two actual SOS signals recorded on-air by USCG logging recorder, is unquestionable; in addition, I witnessed the SOS from PJTA / PRINSENDAM myself from the responding ship, TT WILLIAMSBURGH/WGOA where I was serving as Assistant Radio Officer, the Chief Radio Officer, J. N. Pfister, witnessed this as well. In the SOS from SS MARINE ELECTRIC/WOOH the SOS did not even include the name of the ship as the message was that urgent: the message was: (AUTO-ALARM) SOS SOS SOS DE WOOH WOOH WOOH BT VESSEL DOWN BY HEAD AT 0800GMT POSN 37-51.8N 74-45.5W BT MASTER AR HW. The remark about the Morse sending by the radio officer on the Philippine ship is undeserved. Listen to the exquisite professional sending of MARINE ELECTRIC''s RADIO OFFICER ia600605.us.archive.org/13/items/SsMarineElectricWoohSos/Marine_Electric_SOS.mp3 Please note that because of the urgency of the SOS the name of the ship was not sent (everyone had ITU books listing the name of the vessel). The ship rapidly sunk and when it sunk, it flipped over with the deck facing downward. Only three persons survived this SOS, the causalities included Albion F. Lane, the radio officer who sent this SOS. He is listed on the VWOA Memorial in Battery Park, NYC www.sowp.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/LR-2501211908-Wireless-Operators-Memorial.pdf Likewise listen to the exquisite professional Chief Radio Officer, Jack van der Zee sending the burning passenger ship MS PRINSENDAM/PJTA SOS. Although he falters when sending "passenger" he corrects himself. The ship is on fire, and the heat has reached the radio office. ia600604.us.archive.org/30/items/SosMsPrinsendamOctober41980/prinsendam_sos.mp3 You will find both recordings and other information on those SOS here: archive.org/search.php?query=uploader%3A%22n1ea%40arrl.net%22&sort=-downloads Other books and references consulted in my response are: "Marine Radiotelegraph Opertor License Handbook" by Edward M. @@troppo4872 I have my considerable doubts you know that for sure. If you had some videos on your page that were in German, I might be tempted to take you seriously, but no, you seem to be someone (like me) who just doesn't know, but unlike me, I don't say that something is so when I'm not sure, and you did that just now. Maybe one of the guys from Norddeich Radio can tell us. They've just replied on the Radio-Officers@googlegroups.com email list, it is indeed a reenactment! @Troppo my hat's tipped in awe at your discernment skills! Bravo!
