As a professional classical vocal performer, this was DELIGHTFUL to watch; seeing people hear different kinds of music for the first time is such a joy. If you want to really get into feels, I do love Eric Whitacre's setting of "hurt", and if you wanna go DEEP into the choral rabbit hole, there is a setting of this same text by Tomas Luis de Victoria that is beautiful. Also Spem in alium, as well as Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. Dissonances so beautiful they can make your heart hurt.

Respect to you both for being open to this probably a bit different from what you're used to and still feeling it as you should as beauty is not limited to a typical genre or art form, it's universally recognizable if we but are willing to open up to it. Thank you for doing so. I sang this piece like 20 years ago and it's as much giving me goosebumps listening to it as performing it so long ago. This was a treat, thx guys.

Do they do Christmas songs? This is actually one of the most profound Christmas songs! I’m glad you guys really liked it. O great mystery, and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the newborn Lord, lying in a manger! O blessed virgin, whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia!

Wow, that was something different from your usual reactions. Welcome to the world of contemporary classical choral music; it definitely is its own rabbit hole. Check out Lauridsen's Lux aeterna, especially the third movement " O nata lux." Lots of young people have gotten into composing choral music because of compositions by Lauridsen, Eric Whitacre, Stephen Paulus. A young American composer to watch out for is Caroline Shaw, who has won a Pulitzer and multiple Grammys. All of their music is worth checking into. Thanks for branching out and reacting to this gem of a piece and performance.

@David Arcus i almost put in a Stephen Paulus piece instead but went with Lauridsen. I may still put in a Paulus work eventually though.

This song is saying that isn’t it a wonderful mystery that when Christ was born, the ones to witness that miracle were the animals in the manger. Blessed virgin- you have birthed the son of god. Alleluia. That’s close. It’s really beautiful.
