I Have visted the broads for over 50 years I pay for
a fishing licence to the Envirionment Agency, I pay a
boating toll to the Broads Authority, I also pay for to fish
private banks on the broads, yet I seem to be
getting less and less for my money as my pastimes
are being continually spoilt by thoughtless boaters who
have no respect for anyone else. The stag party drunken
brigade seem to be on the increase. Speeding seems to be
the norm and not the exception and of course we have
the thoughtless couldn't care a less people moorers.
There is serious lack of any enforcement other than the
occasional slapped wrist which isn't good enough and
things are getting out of hand. Its all going down hill and fast as the Broads are being treated as a "Cash Cow" by many and not the beautiful tranquil environment it should be, how sad.

I would just like to mention my experience involving a group of anglers on our recent boating holiday. While trying to moor at the last spot along a free public 24 hour mooring stretch there happened to be 3 people fishing in this space. Signs clearly state that boats have priority and anglers should give way to boats trying to moor. I politely pointed this out to them and told them of my intention to moor there and they refused to budge. Having no alternative I proceeded to moor there anyway to which me, my wife and 10 year old daughter were subjected to some of the worst verbal abuse I've ever encountered, 1 of them even threw a handful of maggots on to the boat. These anglers were not holiday makers from another boat but locals who should know better. Just trying to say it works both ways mate. Those boats were not preventing anyone from fishing as not 1 person seemed to be fishing there so don't you think your making a big deal out of nothing?

In all the years Iv'e been going to the Broads on boating holidays, I have never seen anyone fishing from those platforms, but seen plenty of anglers fishing from the official moorings opposite the ferry inn preventing boats from mooring!

I pay my river licence for my boat so don't you dare tell me to move my boat, also I have a rod licence when in fishing season....just a thought 👍

The people you spoke to gave you no trouble, in fact they apologized and said they would move on - this is typical of the people of the Broads, who forget that the main source of revenue for people and businesses on the broads is boating related.... around £137 million per annum, this includes manufacture, boatyards, maintenance and engineering which employs several hundred local people. This also for the record pays for the maintenance on the broads, including the walkways your letting your s*it machine walk on - i wonder if like many locals you fail time and time again to clean up your dogs mess? ive stepped in tons of it. Interesting thing about fishermen, they are quite happy to leave tackle, bait and litter along the banks, as well as the odd brown suprise in a plastic bag and a bit of dirty toilet paper, and they are quite happy do defecate in the bushes and waterways, but moan because some people who arent locals are moored up somewhere which is quite clearly NOT marked as private. I wonder if the gentleman considers the damage to the wildlife caused by disguarded lines, hooks and the average 200 swans, ducks and moorhens killed by these every year. However thats probably acceptable though because this is done by locals. remember sir that although you do pay for this and pay for that, so do tourists, through the nose, for a few days away on a smelly, badly maintained diesel chugger - exploited by LOCAL BUSINESS they are told by the boatyards to crack on, and have a good time - drink your beer, enjoy a barbeque - ive been on well over 30 trips on the broads in the last 20 years and have never once had a lecture from a boatyard about the environment - if youre goiung to moan, moan at the landowners for the inadequate warning signs and the boatwards for not being thorough enough. , i once had words with a local about the same thing, i asked about signage, he stated it wasn't inkeeping with the scenery to bang signs up everywhere, so what do you want people? I know locals known the broads well, but general people dont. The world is bigger than Norfolk folks, there are other people in it from far away lands, and walk on two legs and everything. peak time you can pay as much a trip to Disney florida for 5 days on the broads. Where would you be without these "pesky" tourists? and lets not forget the broads were formed by industrial scale peat digging which destroyed the original landscape. come on whingers, just wrap it up.

I understand your frustration but maybe you should aim it at your angling club chairman. Your club could invest money in more signs stating that the area is private & no mooring is allowed. You did comment to one boater that "there is a sign up there" well "up there" isn't where he was moored! Can I just also add that there are quite often people fishing at BA moorings, & although the rules state that anglers should move to allow boats to moor a lot of them don't! I think the main problem is lack of moorings for hire boats. The amount of hire boats on the broads seems to be increasing but the moorings seem to be getting less, It also seems as though there are quite a few moorings now that you have to pay for, probably only £5 a night which isn't a lot but times that over 7 nights & well that's another 35 quid added to what is becoming an expensive holiday. I think your club & others along with the hire boat company's should start putting the pressure on the BA to increase the number of free moorings. it would benefit both boaters & anglers. I wholeheartedly agree with your comment on speeding boaters. I was on the broads last year & couldn't believe how many were blatantly speeding, what was more shocking about that was the majority of them were private boats, surely they should know better!

The angling club has a very limited budget and much of the work is done by volunteers, there were more signs but unfortunately they have been vandalised but that said the broads is covered with a plethora of signs now, because people are mooring all over the place and it's all beginning to look damned ugly.
@JOFFO23
@JOFFO23 7 жыл бұрын
People are mooring all over the place due to lack of proper moorings, & this is down to the BA. The hire boat company's increase their fleet knowing there are a lack of moorings but as long as you don't damage their boat they don't seem to care where you moor up. True story this, last year we were on our way down to Acle , had a problem with the boat engine over heating & had to stop quickly, there was a long grass bank which had about 3 signs saying private no mooring, I had to stop there, had no choice. Whilst waiting for the engineer to come out a BA boat came past us, he couldn't of known we were broken down, it looked as though we were just moored up enjoying the sunshine! thought he might of come & told us to move as it was a private mooring, but no he just went on his merry way. So doesn't seem as though they are interested in enforcement. Sadly I don't think your problem of people mooring at your fishing spots is going to be solved soon, the enforcement of the rules should be down to the BA or even Broads beat, isn't that what they are paid to do?

I've been going for holidays on the Norfolk Broads, since 1968 and also lived in Burgh Castle for a few years in the late 70's. Believe me, some aspects of 'The Broads' have improved immeasurably, take water quality for example. In the late sixties water lilies were never seen in the 'pea soup' that were the rivers and broads in those days and the fishing was pretty dire too. Prymnesium was a yearly occurrence, killing many thousands of fish on the upper Thurne... What you must realise, is that many of the holiday makers to the Norfolk Broads are 'first timers' and none of us are born with boat handling skills, they are learned by experience. As for mooring where perhaps you shouldn't. In the 'old days' there were many more hire yards to moor in (at least a dozen in Horning alone) and no where near the number of 'no mooring' signs, which seem to proliferate around the broads these days. It's little wonder that 'inexperienced' boat crews are having problems finding mooring places. A more friendly approach, rather than the brusque "you can't moor here, it's private" might be better received by visitors... Put yourself in their shoes and be a little more welcoming and understanding in your attitude. Everyone learns 'the ropes' as they go along, on boating holidays. Friendly voiced, help and advice can mean the difference as to whether holiday makers return again, and as I'm sure you know, the 'tourist trade' keeps many Norfolk Broads villages alive...

It would be useful if the fishing jetties were painted along the riverside edge with 'say' yellow or green (environmental), that way boaters would be more aware. I've passed many empty jetties and eventually tied up to a tree.

I've been coming on holiday on the broads for over 20years I've only ever had one problem with some one fishing and he went swimming after he called my 5 year old son a little twat all Because he was chucking bread in the water feeding ducks while he was fishing. Even tho we was there first. The rest of the anglers all wave say hello are really friendly. Its all about having respect for each other the broads are there for everyone to use If it says give way to boats give way. If says private don't Moore your boat there simple don't Moore your boat there. Ask for you NEV You approached them all with the wrong attitude. Over the past ten years I come twice a year with my son and misses. that's £3.000 plus spends that's £5.000 a year over ten years thats £50.000. I'm not the only person who spends that sort of money. Just think how much comes into your area from people like me and private boat owners.

I agree, there is something very wrong. mooring is getting more difficult and people are cashing in like parking charges. Ok if its private that is it, but there is less and less space and its a topic being increasingly complained about

While I have some sympathy, the number of fishermen who take residence at demasting locations can be equally frustrating. Moorings too... I'm not sure one side is any better - just a general lack of respect for fellow users of the Broads.

You've got several negative comments, but I boat every year on The Broads; and I remember (before our first time) reading into info around mooring, the tides, and general boat handling stuff. It's not a valid excuse hiding behind being a novice boater. Well done for pointing out and explaining to these boat folk what is what.

Please read this as it's a recent letter from a visitor from North Yorkshire> The broads can be hit and miss. I love the area, mainly through camping and kayaking. On the right day, at the right time, they can be magical. And a kayak means you can explore parts not accessible or allowable to boats. But it is a scramble to get moorings. Most people seem to tie up quite early, not wanting to be left without one later. Moorings with a pub often attract quite loud parties who are very determined to enjoy themselves. It seems hedged about with rules and regs, but more are needed to curb the excesses of those not capable of regulating themselves or behaving responsibly. In high season it's crowded, for sure and not a place you really want to be. Pretty accurate I would say.

Not like their isn't enough farmland to use for fishing such a shame nice place to moor. If it has gone private & you're paying maybe they couldn't invest in the banking. But I'm guessing they won't they will just look at the profit margin.

Mind you complain to the BA for not enough moorings. If you can't moor & the sun is setting you have to moor. Yeah cockshoot is just up there yet I will state not enough mooring sun setting no mooring complain to the BA not the boater.... We could state you the angling club are taking up moorings. Come to a deal with a farmer to use his frontage that isn't moor able. If I had to do this I would ask will you be fishing here highly unlikely complain to the BA about not enough moorings...
