As much as I’ve always loved the Captains blog and they way they have evolved over the years by getting prettier and more professional looking I’ve got to admit that a “back to basics” definitely suits you. More humour, more chat and it’s great to see Shiela featured more (still giggling at her slip up) looking forward to the rest of your blog 😀

The fact is, each and every video in a series is very different to the last. You will note this time very little music, where others have featured more little 'set pieces' that have only existed because of a particular track I had wanted to include. What I have found over time is it is nice to 'take the foot off the pedal' and do things I want in the way I want because it is easy to pander to what people ask or wish for to try and please all the people all the time and when you've tried but still have a bunch that you did not please..Well best of pleasing the most important person of all (yourself) and sharing the day. These are more simplistic and yeah go back to the older days but there are a bunch of ideas I have to try in the future.

This is good until you get your left and right confused. Something both Shiela and indeed my Mum do rather a lot and I read is actually something women are more likely to have problems with than men.

what an excellent blog for the first day , we never laughed so much about Sheilas f**k*d radar brilliant she is such a star (infact your both stars as i know you do put a lot of work in behind the scenes Robin) A little concerned about the slight neglected look of the HW boats as you mention , We have for the first time got a HW boat booked this year so lets see how they compare to Rickos boats as we had 2 last year so we can have a little comparison . Great blog looking forward to the next one ..

I also looked at Richardsons and they have 240 v on their boats in the main.
@TheCaptainsBlog
@TheCaptainsBlog 6 жыл бұрын
Indeed, but they are supplied by an Inverter and not supplemented by a shore power connection - unless that is some of the latest builds have such or some bring their own cable to connect the boat to the electrical pedestal.

Crumbs that is not good enough in this day and age, surely a yard like HW could have updated the boats to all have shore power connections. Shame that otherwise nice boat.

I don't actually agree for a couple of reasons: 1) The electric pedestals were put in and originally they primary reason was for electric boat charging. The Broads Authority made an error in their original plans back in the lat 1990's of putting in standard marina type units with the usual '3 pin shore plug'. This meant anyone with the right cable could plug in. As time passed more and more private boaters got the cables to use (as have some hire yards) and now the default reason for plugging in has nothing to do with electric boats. It also has meant no motivation to have electric boats in any great numbers - why would you if so hard to find a charging point. The best solution would be to have electric car type plugs fitted, while you can stll buy them they cost almost £1,000 which would put most off buying such to plug in. 2) Most boats and boaters actually have nothing on them (other than a microwave) that warrens a shore pore connection. Sure some will say how handy they find it in winter time to use an electric heater, but Kwh cost for an hours use is more than a litre of Diesel - since a Diesel fired heater uses about 250ml to 500ml of fuel an hour, you get two hours of heat for the same cost as one hours electric.

Another way is have you got any port left.

Why did you not plug into the electric point.
@TheCaptainsBlog
@TheCaptainsBlog 6 жыл бұрын
Because the boat (as most from Herbert Woods and indeed Richardon's) have no shore power connection. There is no battery charger and 240v power comes from the 1,400w Inverter.

Hired Aqua light about ten years ago & again very recently, nothing has really changed inverter shore power microwave lcd TV. For the hire price they're asking for boats a lot of them should have had refits but they haven't so the pricing should be near the same of richos classic fleet which they are not very over priced. Money that the old fleet earns doesn't go back into the old fleet which is a massive off put. Hired a lot from woods when under pennant but will never return waste of money.

Indy is doing ok, but I have not been on her and she will have very little use now she in on the Broads. I am focused more on Trixie (24ft Sheerline 740) that has a bunch going on with her at Ludham Bridge Boatyard. Next move date for Indy is June which will see her taken maybe all the way to Reedham lol. I am looking now for a new boat - something small and very powerful like a Fletcher speed boat with a 90HP outboard - and because it is me, such would mainly be used as a humble day boat.

thx for your replies could you please please tell me if hire boat companies i.e richardsons loan you a shore to boat electric hook up cable or would i have to buy my own as i have got swan radiance in sept also if i have to top up with fuel do i pay for the petrol at the pump there and then or is that taken off the fuel deposit along with any other fuel charge that ive spent at the pump im only asking as all this is new to us
@TheCaptainsBlog
@TheCaptainsBlog 6 жыл бұрын
If the boat has the provisions for shore power (e.g. an outside connector) then yes, usually you would get a cable. With Richardson's however I am not sure so it would be them I would ask as the Swan Craft boats may well have the connector but Richardson's may well not supply cables. Your boat will have enough fuel to last in excess of two weeks - so there is never really any need to 'top up' the tank during your hire. But, if you did decide to top up then you will find almost all the boatyards charge the same as each other for fuel (£1.20 a litre currently) and if you decided to put in 50 litres, this is out of your pocket. When you take the hire boat back to base at the end of the holiday and they refuel it, such is taken from your £150.00 deposit. If you topped up mid-holiday of course you will get more deposit refunded, but as I say you would likely make no cost saving if the boatyard you topped up with charge the same price per litre as the yard you hired from. It is easy to use fuel and a lot of people feel hard done by because they do not understand that the engine alone will be using about 1.5 to 2 litres per hour of run time, and that for every hour the heater is run for can use up to half a litre. Over a week or two this adds up so when they return the boat and are asked to pay over and above their deposit they think something must be wrong, or the boat was not re-filed from the previous hire.

I have just copied this over from HW web site a moment ago:- All Herbert Woods cruisers come with the following as standard, for boat specific features please see the individual boat listings. 240v electricity Warm air or radiator heating Fully equipped galley click here for a full inventory Duvets, pillows and bed linen Boat hook, life belt, anchors, ropes Life jackets for all crew

@TheCaptainsBlog 6 жыл бұрын
Again as I said with the comment you left about Richardson's this is correct. Of note too is ALL Herbert Woods boats have 240v electric provision, though it is just a single double socket either in the galley or saloon (cabins will not have sockets). But as with Richardson's there is no shore power connection so you cannot 'plug the boat in' to an electrical pedestal like you find at Ranworth Staithe. The only way to get the 240v mains power is through the Inverter, which gets it's power from the 12v batteries and is incredibly inefficient way of getting 240v AC since you sue so many DC Amps and the Inverter is only 80% odd efficient. It is a shame boatyards are not as Barnes Brinkcraft where almost all their boats not only have an Inverter but also shore power connections and mains operated battery chargers. With these you plug in and can live like at home, run the microwave, use an electric kettle even with some heat the water through an Immersion tank.

Oh I see a bit like Silverline Simoom that we hired. Actually it did boast 2 sockets one behind the TV and inaccessible and one in the galley. You definitely need to take an extension lead with you.
@TheCaptainsBlog

Richardson's boats that say 240v usually have a socket in each cabin. Thing is it all about cost. If you take into account the labour and time and the extra cables and sockets to do it it is why hire yards don't. It also encourages the use of 240v from camera and phone chargers to hair dryers. All running off a couple of lead acid batteries and an inverter.
