Shearer absolutely deserved it. . It's a performance far ahead of it's time with a very more modern viewpoint of where women were moving in society as equals to men. goodness Garbo was and she was very good as Anna Christie, the part just isn't as exciting as Shearer's part was. That gave her the edge over Garbo.

It is because her last film is flopped and contains some scandal on it, George cukor-the director of Garbo last film is really makes so many Garbo fans disappointed to this day too, but despite of that all Garbo never really want to answer the reason of her retirement, if only Garbo still work with Clarence Brown until 1940s, perhaps that will never happen. Also in 1948 Garbo is almost back on screen, she signed a one movie deal with producer Walter Wanger. They decided to make a film version of H. Balzac's famous novel, La Duchess de Langelais. Sadly, due of many problems, post-ponings and finally loosing the all important financiers, the film was stopped. Wanger hoped to start a-new but in February 1950, Garbo lost interrest and returned to New York. After the failure of Duchess, Garbo got many new offerings for Comeback Films but the possibility of such a realization was never so close as it was in 1949 with La Duchess de Langelais.

Garbo should have won for Camille in 1937 against Luise Rainer's yellowface performance in The Good Earth, but Louis B. Mayer always had an axe to grind against the obstinate Garbo and chose instead to campaign harder for Rainer whom he was hoping would replace Garbo in the echelon of MGM stars. The joke was on him, though, as Rainer would basically retire by 1938 and Garbo would only churn out 3 more pictures before her retirement in the early 40s.

Two things about Garbo that I find most interesting: 1. She was a very talented investor. Her bread and butter were real estate and fine art, but also had money in stocks.and bonds to keep things diversified. 2. Her reclusiveness was not because she had social anxiety, but because she wisely did not trust the vast majority of people she knew. She likely learned that during her time in Hollywood; a LOT of sketchy peole in thay industry.

The only controversial race of the 30s I am aware of is the 1934 snub of Bette Davis's Of Human Bondage performance with no nomination. It caused such a furor that the Academy announced it would accept write-in for Davis in a one year change of rule. Claudette Colbert (It Happened One Night) was sure Davis would win and had already gone to the train station to leave town on the nite of the awards. She was notified she won and Bette did not. I seriously doubt that Garbo could have cared about earning an Oscar. The fact that she could walk away from a career that was extraordinary showed how little she regarded the business of making movies. With regard to Shearer if it weren't for TCM I don't think the name would conjure up strong emotions for the actress. Out of curiosity I have watched a number of her films (in part as they haven't held up and are at best passe) both silent and sound. You are very generous to refer to her as "legendary". Probably she will best be remembered for the Claire Booth Luce film adaption that TCM shows more often than any of the other of her film--or maybe it just seems that way.

However , the prior year, she didn’t deserve the award, in my opinion , for her relatively brief performance in the overlong ‘The Great Ziegfeld’. It should have gone to Carole Lombard for her zany role in ‘My Man Godfrey’. Best picture should’ve been ‘Mr. Deeds Goes to Town’ in lieu of ‘Ziegfeld’.
