NORMAN FINKELSTEIN ON THE GENOCIDE IN GAZA | A Busboys and Poets Presentation

The Gaza Strip is among the most densely populated places in the world. More than two-thirds of its inhabitants are refugees, and more than half are under eighteen years of age. Since 2004, Israel has launched eight devastating “operations” against Gaza’s largely defenseless population. Thousands have perished, and tens of thousands have been left homeless. In the meantime, Israel has subjected Gaza to a merciless illegal blockade.
What has befallen Gaza is a man-made humanitarian disaster that has only grown in the years since. Since October 7th 2023 the world has been watching in horror as Israel tightens its blockades, starves the population, and destroys major civilian infrastructure.
Based on scores of human rights reports, Norman G. Finkelstein's book GAZA: AN INQUEST INTO ITS MARTYRDOM presents a meticulously researched inquest into Gaza’s martyrdom. Finkelstein is joining us on the Busboys stage to share his research into the ongoing genocide enacted by the Israeli state against Palestinians in Gaza with guest Krystal Marie Ball. Copies of the book GAZA: AN INQUEST INTO ITS MARTYRDOM will be available for purchase during and after the event, and Finkelstein will be signing after the program.

My heart goes out to Professor Norman Finkelstein for his marvelous education of the masses as well myself, on the topic of the thousands of wrongs and the decades of sufferings the Palestinian people have been through in their own nation. Appartheid is not democracy. There is a lot of evidence of Israel’s long-standing violations of international law. It has unilaterally annexed East Jerusalem, built illegal settlements in the occupied territory, and continued to build the separation wall in the occupied territory despite the International Court of Justice declaring it illegal in 2004. The UN Special Rapporteur and several human rights organisations (see Amnesty, Human Rights Watch, B’Tselem) have stated that Israel’s system of rule in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is actually apartheid. Restrictions of movement, forced displacement of Palestinian communities, demolition of houses, land grabbing and settler violence and other human rights violations that occur under the occupation are well documented.

@@sonyjoseph5426he said something very specific, actually A form of Orwellian doublespeak “Through {all of the events in Gaza we have parsed through since October 7th} (hyper specifying) {we have not found Israel to be in violation of IHL} (acquittable statement)” Another way of looking at it is “there may very well be an unspecified number of events that have taken place in Gaza alone, since October 7th alone which violate IHL, we just haven’t parsed through the reports” Still, ultimately a likely dishonest statement, but tells a much different story when you read it that way, especially when he proceeds that statement with defensive, passive aggressive, condescending statements about folks thinking the US State Department wasn’t taking things seriously…

Always great to hear Professor Finkelstein, and Crystal Ball is a great interviewer. I'm glad Finkelstein mentioned David Stannard's 1992 "American Holocaust," but the book wasn't just about the US genocide against their indigenous people; it was about European genocide against the indigenous throughout the Americas, and it is very good. Also, the "Something's Happening Here" song Finkelstein got the crowd to sing is entitled "For What It's Worth" and was by Buffalo Springfield, released in 1966. It was initially about police responses to young people violating curfew on the Sunset Strip in 1965 but was extrapolated to other situations of the era. And I loved Finkelstein's response to the audience member who told Finkelstein that he was showing his age by criticizing young people's obsession with viewer numbers and share numbers: "No, I'm not. I'm showing your stupidity." He is so right.

NORMAN FINKELSTEIN, quite literally makes a difference in my life. As a singer-songwriter myself, i find his voice asJohn the Baptist's was described, "the voice of one crying in the wilderness. " Oh how I love this man! I have TOTAL LOVE & RESPECT for his VOICE. For me, he is MUSIC to my ears, for i love the mournful sound of his VOICE reminding me of an oboe, a cello, a viola and my guitar. This room, reminds me of the small clubs & coffee houses in the Village , the N.Y.C. Subway System and the venues i performed my folk-music in. And of Krystal Ball, well i REALLY appreciated her expertise at interviewing when she invited Norman Finkelstein to be interviewed on her show. And I REALLY, appreciated her expertise when she interviewed RFK Jr. & put his pro-Israeli feet to the fire and went toe to toe with his arse. And YES, I grew up in the 60's to 80's,...Vintage MUSIC. And once again, Unlike our present CANCEL & GASLIGHT culture: in those days MUSIC had a MAJOR impact on our LIVES and WORDS were soaked in the REALITY of the days we were LIVING IN.

Hard to hear - the report of 6 yrs ago, though necessary. Certainly helps to understand the "structure of feeling" that Raymond Williams talks about inside Gaza before Oct 6th. I do understand Norman Finkelstein quite reasonably, giving up, but now, with the new context also helping us understand the dire situation before October 7th 2023 and what it meant to people of Gaza, which is to me, the most important factor in what we, humane peoples, of which people who are against colonisation are part of, should seek to understand.
