This is the last house that Frank Lloyd Wright ever designed and it's one of my favorite homes by him. Organic, futuristic and full of circular shapes, made in the colours of the desert. Very similar with the works by John Lautner. Based on my own drawings and photos found on the internet I made a complete walkthrough. To preserve the legacy by FLW and J. Lautner. And to enjoy the beauty of their work!

A part of FLW folklore is that his strong geometric sense resulted from playing with Froebel Blocks. His mother and aunts were into progressive educational ideas so these blocks and a set of colored engravings of landmarks of architecture were a part of Wright's early education.

I never really realized the Guggenheim was built at the same time as this house. This is the only kitchen of FLW's that I consider to match the beauty of the rest of the home. This house makes people look good simply because they're strolling through. I think more elderly people should receive respect, as this place is an amazing reflection of what a 91-year-old's mind can look like. Footnote: I absolutely adored those deep purple cushions on the long couch along the window. Thanks again for taking us on a beautiful vacation.

Sorry the first Fast and Furious (FnF) of the franchise movies. In the movie, the FBI headquarters was a circular house with a bridge over the pool. It had roof edge treatment similar to Silverback but on a smaller scale. I believe IRL it was called the "Ridgetop House" in LA and was built in 1963 designed by David Fowler, and was demolished some 10yrs plus ago for a 50k sqft macmansion monstrosity. Your video reminds us what a genius FLW was. We take so much for granted nowadays,, we forget what attention to detail means, not in the superficial sense but in the holistic view of what living requires; his designs are the proverbial _dwellings._ Of course this was for the elite few, but you see basic concepts in his thinking we should all apply when thinking about applying a home design to the needs of its inhabitants. He was a master at that, of course also being a great designer and architect. His furniture is breathtaking as well. A long time favorite and example, for many, and certainly for me! This was the start of our US tour. I would on occasion get remakes such as "You are with them, you have it so easy." "We know what you will turn out like." I've been to most countries. I could appreciate the scenery and the views and places I visited in these videos as they look scenic and I can now appreciate the art in them. I did not feel that at all when I was there. It was violence against me and others all the time. I was both tortured and relied on, trusted and untrusted to do things people requested me to do because of the types of talents I excelled at. There was not a time I didn't have some fucked up injury. I was medicated in my sleep, unfeed and most of the time they took away my shoes. I was not given an allowance at all and had no ids or money of any kind to do anything. Friends were asked to turn against me and often did and were scared of interacting with me at all even when they loved/liked me. People hated who I was connected with and hated me because they feared I would carry on that direction. When they saw my direction, and admit they liked it they would be attacked if they didnt act even within. It always seemed easy to fix at the time because a lot of the poeple I saw doing horrible things would get easily frazled and scared of others. A lot of them including finance are easily replaced as they are just inbetweens and a lot of the directors are not fit to be there because they are unskilled as the system has prevented a lot of growth and new thinking. Most of the problem makers are only focused on keeping those things and creating fear for that and have no other talents. I know more talented people for creating fear anyway.

His 'Falling [into the] Water' (a.k.a. 'Rising Damp') needed tens of millions of repairs. Prize for last place is a FLW house. His sketch of two converging lines, 'The Illinois' at "1 mile", was the tallest building 'design' (sic), until someone scrawled an extra zero making it "10 mile". He reportedly forget to leave room for elevators between his two converging lines, 'The Illinois', exposing it for what it is. I could go on...

Excellent choice by the (more recent) owners to switch the driveway and parking area to dirt and add the large shade trees. That's definitely an improvement. That's probably the nicest FLW kitchen I have seen. I've never liked FLW kitchens (and Lautner was never great at them either), as they tend to look like glorified closets. But this one is properly pretty. I love the media room. Obviously, FLW never realized TVs would be a fixture in homes until his last years, but it's to his credit that once he knew about them, he immediately started designing for them. (I remember a built-in TV storage cabinet in another FLW house, but never a "den" like this.) Strange, now that I think about it: I don't think I've ever seen a TV-focused room or area in a Lautner house. Finally, I wonder how much Lautner influenced FLW versus the other way around. I can see a lot of overlap between the two in this final era of FLW's career. It would make an interesting study of "who did it first?" for various architectural motifs between the two, to see if any of the influence went in the other direction. As always, great video Jop.

Hey nice to read your comment and interesting what you saw in the house: - yes it's a major improvement that they created a sandy driveway that integrated very well in the desert. - this house has one of the best kitchens of all Wright houses. Wright is indeed notorious for his small kitchens and bathrooms. - The den was originally intended as a space for small and intimate conversations. Wright could not for see the invention of TV back then. But the room is very suitable for watching TV , John Lautner did design a few houses with media rooms : The Garcia House has a small room for sitting and watching TV, the 2nd Harpel House in Alaska also has a TV room. But yes the number of house by Lautner who have a TV Room is indeed low.
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel Жыл бұрын
Frank Lloyd Wright influenced Lautner more than Lautner did Wright. Most inventions were did by Wright and than used by Lautner in a more daring and extreme way. The main difference between Wright and Lautner is that Lautner went further than Wright in being organic and futuristic.
@billwrinkle9662
@billwrinkle9662 Жыл бұрын
I think the only point I would contend is that "Wright could not foresee the invention of TV back then." Televisions were very common in American homes by the late 1950s when this particular house was designed. (I Love Lucy's first season was in 1951; Elvis was on Ed Sullivan in 1956.) I even found a quote by FLW calling television "chewing gum for the eyes." I am confident that FLW knew that house would have a television in it, and probably designed that room with a television in mind as a central feature. I don't know if the built-ins along the wall in the den are original FLW work, but they are what is driving my thinking. Also, I seem to remember one of his homes (one of the Usonian houses out in the Midwest, I think) had a television that rose up on hydraulics out of a wooden cabinet between the dining area and living room area. It wasn't a particularly pretty thing, but I have the image in my mind. I could be wrong.

I noticed there are two study spaces, even more if you count how bedrooms sometimes have a desk, so was thinking one of those spaces could be more recreational and communal - an arts-and-crafts nook maybe. @@BaharToktas-wv8sb Yes, I know the problems you face: I desperately wanted the drawings for these videos too but couln't find them anywhere, so I made my own drawings and did my owns research based on the photos. It's so sad there's so little information available about these beautiful houses. That's why I started this channel: to share information with other fans like you. Ufortunately I never made a vertical cross section drawing. I can help with other houses by J.Lautner and F.L Wright.

Your map Is wrong. That is Camelback mountain and is the wrong spot.The second map is correct but on a different mountain a few miles away. My friend use to live in this house when I was a kid. It was pretty cool.

Okay thank you for your feedback. I made a mistake then, other than that I hope and think everything is correctly. I've seen many other Wright house in reality: but I had never seen this one. Great that you had the privilege to actually visit the house. It's indeed a cool home.

@@SuperJobbel Sorry for the correction. I just know every square inch of that area. Would ride my bike to Arizona Biltmore, which is a fantastic Wright design a few miles below your featured house. Would also ride out to Taliesen West for the day to hang out. Great job on your videos. Really fun to learn about these projects.

I totally agree that kitchens are workspaces. Kitchens are way too big in more contemporary luxurious homes these days. They're completely useless. Everything has to be within reach, otherwise it's completely pointless. But we waste a lot of energy and resources more than ever these days. A complete waste and completely unsustainable.

Yes you're right in some points. But at the same time: you can cook with a large group of friends when you have a large kitchen.

All Frank Lloyd Wright houses are unique but unfortunately when somebody buys one of his houses like the Norman Lykes people start changing the interior originally there was no second floor that was added on after his death during the construction and so was the many other bedrooms there were supposed to be in bathrooms everything was altered to me it's not a Frank Lloyd Wright house anymore would somebody alter the frame or the painting of a Rembrandt or Picasso of course not so why would you do that to a house I can rest and updating the plumbing in the electrical work but changing the individual rooms now
@SuperJobbel
@SuperJobbel Жыл бұрын
I didn't knew that there was no 2nd floor originally. However I did knew there were originally 2 more bedrooms. They made the contemporary bedrooms larger by removing some walls. Aside from those changes this house isn't much changed: its still very close to Wright's original design, especially compared to some other house by Wright who are entirely ruined by the new owners.

@@SuperJobbel you are so cool and apparently if you want a Frank Lloyd Wright House you are allowed to alter the back-end but not the front changing electrical outlets or Plumbing this that's a no-brainer that has to be fixed in my house I still have the original plumbing and electrical lines that's only because I can't afford it to change them but thank you very much for getting back to me it's always a pleasure I've been in so many Frank Lloyd Wright homes and other buildings there just amazing and when people say that he had leaky roofs what's the say that the material that he had of the time to use can cause leaky roofs or the people who worked on them being care for his work and made them leak because they didn't like his architecture or him personally I always wanted to win the lottery and I would buy out every house that's in Riverside for the coonley estate and then turn it back to square one live there occasionally and turn it into a museum for all eternity unfortunately the beautiful gardens are gone in somebody built the house that's not a wright house on that lot. The man house has been divided into two residents then you have the Stables is another residence and the garden Cottage is another residence if I had the money they would all be as one the way it was meant to be originally here's a interesting story, I took my mom to Fallingwater in Pennsylvania because she's handicapped and whatnots we drove down the main driveway while everyone crosses the bridge. then we got inside they told her she could sit on the cantilever furniture so I said out loud to her I said boy I can't wait to get handicap myself so I can do the same thing so they heard that and said that's your mom I said yes well you can sit with her on the cantilever couch I felt like I was a king to be able to sit on a piece of original Frank Lloyd Wright furniture I loved it in fact down the road when I used to work for Butterfield Country Club I recreated falling water with the real working waterfall using a materials of two watermelons covered with pineapple rinds to give it the stone effect I use cinnamon sticks for steel the glass was just clear plastic and the concrete was jicama plus I had a working waterfall directly underneath the overhang balacany..I did it for Mother's Day in 1997 I believe it took me 12 hours but it was a piece of work in fact one of the members had me come out and talk to me cuz she used to work with Frank Lloyd Wright and told me that if he was here today he would have gave you two thumbs up and when I heard that from her I got Goose pimples running all over my body to know that she worked with Frank Lloyd Wright... so thank you very much for texting back you have a good rest of the day and maybe we'll have another chat on other architectural gems from other great architecture architects like House on the Rock in Spring Green Wisconsin

MR. FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'S last building was again altered, so it's quite a true 100% FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT house...so sad that people think its ok to alter a work of art and add to a original masterpiece..ao why don't these people alter their PABLO PICASSOS and other great works of art as well ..
