Such a refreshing change from the many coffee snobs on KZfaq - great content Jack! Interesting comparison and would definitely be interesting to see if you used all the best practices to prep the coffee, does a different type of tamper change anything?

I think with your normal (WDT) prep or doing the test 3x on each might be better but I doubt there's really any difference. I think it more depends on your preferences. For some reason I like the ones that look like a more traditional tamper (better to pickup and grip maybe?). I had a Asso the Jack leveler (whatever it was called) that was super heavy and slippery easy to drop so maybe that's why.

I think the palm style tamper is great when it is used with a bottomless portafilters. However, when it is used with a double spouts portafilter. Our power from upper body is too much, and it would be difficult to balance the portafilter, unless there is station for the the portafilter

I prefer the puck-sized tamper. I got the Normcore distributor & tamper 2-in-1 puck, and also the WDT v3 tool (it's pretty new). I use these two tools every day. So while not cheap, I do get very good results, mainly very consistent. I am sure that there is better out there but this is just fine for what I need.

What a coincidence, I am receiving my DE1 today, and I'll test between the Normcore regular and palm tampers - by mistake as I unsuccessfully tried to cancel my palm tamper order when the regular went back in stock. Which tamper do you prefer for workflow and aesthetics? I imagine they do exactly the same thing, so it comes down to what you like. Thanks!

I got the flat one in puck size. I like the handling. But I wonder if there is a pro or con in the mechanics. The puck-size-one works that you push the silver metal into the coffee until the black metal hits the top the filter. The other one (V4) works in the opposite way. The black metal is at the top of the filter and then you push the the tamper into the coffee.

What version of the Normcore do you have, version 3 or 4? How is the fit on the pavoni? I was thinking of getting one for my Europiccola. My even cheaper self leveling one I have is maybe a touch too small.
