Well done. Could have used some more full size period photos. This campaign was one of the most interesting and the equipment some of the most unique.

Thanks mate. I was more interested on the overall strategy, and tactics and how that guided the battle. Especially considering the previous episode regarding the Italian armored doctrine and what material they did have, but used much less effective.

I'm sure even Rommel would've been impressed by Richard O Connor's tactical acumen here.

It was a brilliant offensive. Aggressive, reinforced success and used Italian mistakes to the maximum.

O'Connor v Rommel would have been a fascinating contest. Ritchie was over-promoted and out of his death but Auchinleck deserves more praise for stopping Rommel and preparing the ground for Montgomery. Also, the fact that German intelligence had broken the US 'Black Code' and could read US Col Fellers' secret reports to DC, meant that Rommel knew Richie's battle plans, strength, weakest points before the battle. Tends to colour Romme's reputation for being 'brilliant, having fox-like cunning' - no, he knew exactly what the British were planning (although he'd never admit it!).

It would have been, that both were able to concentrate, and use speed. Tactically Rommel was very good, strategically he did not do Germany any favours in North Africa. Forced them to use additional resources in an area that was not critical for Germany.

Thanks mate, appreciate it. I am finally getting the hang of creating a map and referencing old maps to it. Always hard when a small village or hill is important for an event but I am unable to find the place.

Devastating defeat indeed.

Almost flawless by the British forces. Impressive what they managed with the men and material at hand.

@jms ww2 are you making these videos or re uploading them? If you’re uploading original content then this channel is very underrated and you should have way more subscribers. Assuming it’s your work I see your channel blowing up (getting very popular) in the very near future. Good job man! Look forward to more content !

Glad you like the video mate! It is only original content made by me on the channel. I have a couple of videos I would like to do. The German invasion of Poland (1939) as seen from the Polish side is among them. It all depends on what sources I find what videos I can make. Anyway, thanks again, I take a bow.

Thanks mate. I use Qgis for making the maps, a bit of a steep learning curve, but well worth it. It is free so that might be a way to make your own map and get it as you want it.

I made the map myself so there is no link, sorry.

Operation Compass took 2 months to complete, it was not a 5 day raid as such.
@jmsww22 жыл бұрын
The operation started as a 5 day raid, so the actual Compass plan was a 5 day thing. The British did very well and reinforced success, so they destroyed the Italian 10th army in 2 months. Really a brilliant tactical victory on their part. Suppose now we call the whole 2 month camping "Operation Compass", but they really had no plan after the initial success. After the start it was a flexible ad-hoc thing. Suppose they could not believe that the Italian defenses would fall apart so quickly.

Oh no! Do we have to go to the German intervention - can we just skip that bit and move on to the second battle of El Alemein instead?
@jmsww22 жыл бұрын
So operation Compass, blank, blank, El Alemein, somewhat looses the "How" :). The German intervention really does explain what lead to the British Victory, so there will be some episodes before that. My videos are at the moment somewhat "chronological" so there are some hard times for the Allies. Did Malaya 1941-42, now working on the Burma campaign. Incredible hard fighting there and not given the attention it deserves I think.
