North American B-25 Tour - Kermie Cam - Exterior Walk-Around
We tried our best to get Part 2 of the Waco Flight to FoF done for this week, but we need to add some more photos and video to get the edit just right.
I scrambled to come up with a replacement video that could be shot quickly, and thought now is the time to do a walk-around and interior tour of the B-25 bomber. I grabbed a GoPro and headed over to the Museum Hangar and shot this clip.
We were trying to have this done for Wednesday but, It also wound up taking longer than expected . . . again because we added some cool extra shots and info. Here it is . . . Hope you enjoy our efforts.
Either the Waco video of Part 2 of this B-25 Tour will come out next week. Depends on if we feel the Waco is ready or not.
Thanks for your understanding, and patience
Kermit

One thing I like about Kermit is he is very knowledgeable but still has the humility to be open about the fact that there's stuff he doesn't know. That's really endearing.

If memory serves correctly, ( I'm 85 ) I remember seeing these parked at end of runway at Grenier Field, Manchester, NH during the War. We lived in Litchfield, NH just down the road from the airbase at the time, and aircraft parked at or near end of runway closest to the road were often visible. A lot of ferry flights - especially B-17's - left this base during the War for overseas destinations.

I used to drive by this Aircraft every day in the 70's when it was parked at Metro field in Fairbanks, AK. At that time I was working at Gabe's Truck and Auto.. and I spend many the lunch hour walking around this sexy bird! Funny story, at that time we were building the "GFRA" race track, on permafrost ground.. It was so soupy during breakup that we "lost" a D6 Cat by leaving it running overnight.. in the morning only the top of the roll cage was showing above ground lol. So needless to say, we put tons of material on the track and we were "Gifted" about 150 barrels of "Waste Oil" (Oil, Antifreeze, DN-600, ATF and one unknown ingredient) from Alyeska Pipeline Co.. So we used that "oil" on the track and wacker-packed the heck out of it.. and on the first Sunday race day, the track looked great! The first qualifying race was ready to go and after a roaring start the cars blipped there throttles to "setup" for the corner.. Of course they backfired,, and WOOSH a 360 deg ring of fire around the track! (Turns out that waste oil's secret ingredient was Jet A😀 Over the years I lost the VHS tapes of the A Stock cars racing through the flames! That's how the Greater Fairbanks Racing Association's new race track was christened by fire! Small world Kermit that you ended up with her, Thank you for bring back great memories and a gorgeous Warbird!

I have no doubt they probably met. My Uncle was known for being a incredible tuner. Many a pilot would make an excuse to get diverted to his airbase. My grandmother would right to him and asked what he needed. He would write back more handkerchiefs please. Every time he worked on the carbys a hanki would be used to keep sand out of parts. Went on to develop diesel intercoolers for plant equipment after the 2nd war. Incredible man. Lest we forget.

Back in 1980 when I was doing cargo conversions on CV-240s, the owner of the conversion company told me he flew B-25s during the war and said that on takeoff he could rotate until the tail bumper scraped the ground, and the 25 would climb out no problem. Pretty cool. Wright Flyer, USAF (1968-1972).

I saw my first B-25 in July 1998. I was visiting Florida for the first time and was in my motel on Irlo Johnson Highway, Kissimmee, when loud racket went overhead. I jumped outside in time to see a B-25, with wheels and flaps down, clearly on final to some airfield. I went to the motel office and got a map of Kissimmee. I found the airport and put it on the To-Do List while I was in town - my main mission, on that trip, was to drive out to the Space Coast and watch STS-88 Endeavour launch the second module of the Space Station, but there was room in my schedule for extra activities. A couple of days later, I was able to get to the airport and spent a few hours at the Flying Tigers Warbirds Museum. Very interesting place. Don't worry, Kermit: next trip to Florida, you're on my To-Do List. Definitely! PS Space Shuttle Endeavour didn't launch. That happened to me two out of two trips.

Beautiful B-25. Yours should be the standard all are restored to. The red crank at the radio operators station is to lower the flaps in the event the hydraulics are lost. They only crank down, so once they're in, they're in. Our B-25 doesn't have it, but it was on the SIC test. The crank for the bomb bay is up by the navigator, but we don't have that either. Thank you for your videos.

So cool, AMAZING restoration! When I was a 7 or 8 year old kid back in the late 50's they had one of these as a static display at Friendship Intl (later BWI) my father a B-24 Bombardier took me aboard and I distinctly remember him picking me up to the tunnel over the bomb bay and we both crawled into the cockpit. Years later 1966 or so they had one parked on the far side of the field as an old relic. I would sneak under the fence and go aboard and play "Sky King". I loved old planes and still do.... jets, suck and the blow pretty much, at least from my experience in the Navy. I'll take props any day!

An old WW2 pilot I had the pleasure of speaking with while I'd service his car (over 20 years ago) told me he LOVED flying the B-25. He said it was super stable, easy to fly, resilient, and easier to take off and land with the nose gear versus the tail dragging B-17 that he said could get a little tricky landing. Great video Kermit! Too bad there aren't any flying B-26's. (My personal favorite.)

The actual pilot of the Apache Princess when she was shot down was my Father in Law, Ted Hart. I never knew him very well as he had Alzheimers by the time I came along. He passed away on 1 April 2000, and all of his children have now passed on. He'd never talk about the incident, but I read the story of his survival in a Japanese POW camp on Formosa which, of course is now Taiwan. It was quite a story. I believe he was the only crewmember who survived the POW camp. It is really nice that you chose that plane for the restoration. Thanks.

I was fortunate enough to fly in one of these beauties back in the late 80's out of a Youngstown Ohio base during an airshow. I was 30 something at the time. I still have the the pin that marks the privelaged occasion, but the photo's have been lost. I paid what was a small fortune for me at the time for the honor. I cannot remember which model or the name, but it was all polished aluminum. The internal configuration was much different. I had a jump seat mounted on the back of the bomb bay doors, what an experience when the doors opened! I got to crawl back into the tail gunners position in flight, and if small spaces bother you forget it! It was a tube about 12"' by 18" , barely enough room to allow you to move along it's length. Once I got situated the view forward was astounding! Not to mention the noise!. You could not hear yourself scream! Between the noise level and the round motor sound, I will never forget it, ever. If I had the chance I would spend all day in one in flight. THINK ABOUT THE MEN THAT SPENT WAR TIME IN THEM. A new level of respect for them is deserved.

The B-25 has been a personal fav since I was a little kid (way back when). I always enjoy getting a chance to see them up close and personal. There's one not far from me now in Delaware flying out of Georgetown airport I believe. On the rear, one of those holes could be a shell casing ejection? Stay well Kermie, we'll get back to something akin to normal soon.
