I will definitely have to purchase the DVD of the entire series. I remember the television mini-series when I was at the University of South Carolina. It was all I had time to watch between term papers and studying. I was born in the South (Virginia), but my family had only arrived in America in 1903. My wife, on the other hand, can trace her family to 1708 South Carolina. They were farmers and planters, had fought in the Revolution, War in Mexico, and the Civil War.

Dang, I used to love this show as a kid, and I still do. A bit cheesy at times but still excellent entertainment and a worthy classic.

In the book Billy never transferred to the Sharpshooters. He remains in the Engineering Corps through out the whole war.

The book was MUCH better, and closer to history, than the miniseries. The way the miniseries had members of each side constantly deserting and running into each other drove me nuts. At the end of the first miniseries George says to Orry, "If we had to meet like that [on opposite sides in battle] I'd rather we never met again". In the book, in fact, George and Orry never do meet again - Orry is killed shortly before the war ends. A tragedy the producers of the TV version sidestepped because they liked Swayze's Orry and wanted to use him in Book III. The irony there is that by the time they did Book III Swayze was a big star and too expensive so they got a double and killed Orry in the first two minutes. So they could have stuck with the book.

Was I the only one when this first aired to tune in and keep it on just for the Jimmy Stewart cameo? One of his final live-action appearances...and still in an era where if you missed a moment like that, it wouldn't come around again for another year (if ever without videotape). Producer David L. Wolper took his all-star cast from the first miniseries and somehow managed to out-do its scale here in Book II. Every epic should introduce its cast like this! (Incidentally, I just noticed the opening titles incorrectly insert an A into the spelling of "independence."

Just saying but I love the part with the bagpiper playing Scotland the brave and the reason I love that part is because I play the base drum in a pipe and drum band that is named after the famous famous brave black watch which is a British Canadian and Scottish infantry regiment and its currently the 3rd battalion of the royal regiment of Scotland 🏴 and my bands name is the Atlantic watch located in Red Bank New Jersey USA

The era of epic miniseries. Between both of these, Lonesome Dove, War and Remembrance, and Roots they didn’t make them any better. Look at all the great actors and up and coming ones who are now household names in the credits. Unreal casts in those movies.

bugsbunny, they were against slavery, but a lot of the north was still simple minded in their thinking when it came to people of different colors and even nationalities. The irish were not treated well either, as an example. just wanted to let you know.

The Northern blockade apoun southern supply ports was the primary instrument that began the capitulation of the Confedracy. Without proper supplies it contributed to men deserting in the thousands in the last stages of the War, notwithstanding the fall of the city of Atlanta, which as a distribution depot supplied the southern armies by Rail much needed supplies coming in through the ports by Rail. General Sherman's ruthless difinition of war as Hell killed thousands of cilvilians. Many believe had the South won Sherman would of been brought up on War Crimes as a result, but his actions played a primary thrust that changed the tide for the Consolidaters of federal power over State rights and the end of the 10th Amendment as we knew it. Watch..The real Lincoln on...U tube.

I have NO idea what Brett is wearing but that's nothing that existed in 1861 America. Nobody was wearing tons of petticoats and a bustle. She should have been in a cage crinoline (hoopskirt). And do NOT get me started on those sausage curls...

Sarah B just let you know her father was very rich her father only Rich Plantation so a lot of women from the south had clothes coming from Europe and back then they were so rich they could have Anything made back then they were not known as designers like they are now but back then they were called a different name a lot of these famous designers back then came from France England Germany a few places in New York Boston back then let's see if a dress was made for a woman that lived in a plantation that dress that would be made just for her they cost anywhere from $20 to $75 Dollars brand New but today's prices it'll be like Anywhere from $10,000 Dollars To Over $100,000 Dollars
@SarahB18632 жыл бұрын
@@connormacleod7010 That's great but you're missing my point - by 1861 petticoats had been replaced by the much lighter cage crinoline. In this scene Brett is actually wearing a fashion that's about 8 years out of date. And the bustle didn't come into being until about 1868, 7 years after this scene takes place.
