As a native Nevadan, when i first visited Salisbury and saw the statue in 2000 i was shocked. The statue itself is quite beautiful until one reads the inscription. At that time I was not aware that it was even legal to have Confederate propaganda like that in a public space. Those people don't care about losing history. They care about losing their power symbol.

How do you decide who "deserves" to be looked at? Who get to decide? Every human has flaws. There must be room to celebrate people who have done extraordinary things. Or people who have contributed greatly to history. Thomas Jefferson is a good example. He did extraordinary things and wrote the constitution. But he also owned slaves. So what? At a certain point in history everyone who had enough wealth and power owned slaves, including black people. That does not mean that every historical person from that time should be censored. History should teach, enlighten, inspire and not least, put our lives and times in perspective.

You seem to confuse the phrase "refuse to listen" with "refuse to obey". They listen, but disagree - which is allowed in a free society. They want to keep the statue, not out of logic, but due to feelings, emotions, identity. And the other side wants to tear down the statue because of feelings, emotions and identity. You see - the reason why the (neither of the two) sides don't "listen" is that they are on opposite sides of a conflict based on emotions, not "facts".

I'm an American descendant of slaves. I found ancestors on both sides of the Civil War. Black ones as slaves that went with their white slave owner into the Confederate Army. This particular white slave owner was an ancestor of mine too. (His brother was my direct ancestor) I see people like the group trying to keep the statue and I wonder what are they trying to hold up? What does history like mine tell them? Is it the part they ignored? Digging around in my family tree I also found a black ancestor that enrolled in the Union Army at the White House on the first day black people could join the Union Army in 1863. That particular ancestor was from Arkansas. That's a long way even on today's standards. I wonder what that history says to them? Thanks for sharing your story. I think when people like you speak up and tell your family history it sheds a positive light on what happened back then and how it shaped your views now. I don't think it's anything to be ashamed of, but if we are going go get past this as a country we do need to talk about it.

@Anthony Rubio Exactly! They want to wipe it from the schools in a factual context, yet they want to keep the symbols that honour and memorialize the people that fought for slavery.

Or they have a valid opinion that differs from yours. Or are you so self-righteous and brain-washed that you can't accept that (a) other people can have valid opinions that differ from yours--or that you could (gulp) actually maybe possibly ever be... wrong? Your comment exhibits the exact behavior that you are condemning. Congrats! :)

In war, losers don't get to put up monuments. The government should tear down all Confederate monuments and put up monuments celebrating the U.S. victory over the states that wanted to own human beings. That's the real history, if these people truly want history to be preserved and remembered with monuments, then they should have no problem with monuments that celebrate the U.S. victory and the freedom from slavery, and the loss by the Confederates.

no what should have happened at the end of the civil war, just like atlanta was burned that should have happened to any of the state capitols that support the south, and on top of that they should have been banned from any national election for 200 years, would have sent a real message to them that they are now no longer real americans just traitors and should be treated as traitors

the same history that empowers them is the same history that bring others down. the thing i like about genuine people who cares for one another is they're not trying to be better than anyone and truly wants everyone to be happy.
