An in-depth comparison between these two large Southern states. I examine a wide range of categories to determine which state is better overall. I look at the cities, natural scenery, beaches, economics, companies, taxes, agriculture, music, food and other categories to make the determination.

That was a bizarrely arbitrary and unnecessary comparison. North Carolina has the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which has the same number of visitors annually as Okefenokee (400k). The comparisons should have been Great Dismal Swamp vs. Okefenokee, and North Carolina mountains vs. Georgia mountains.

Add me in, especially on picking the swamp. What he completely undersold was the fact that western North Carolina is a whole universe of the most impressive mountains east of the Rockies. It's not just the Smokies. The tallest mountain in the East is Mt. Mitchell, which is in the Black Mountains northeast of Asheville. And against an entire third of North Carolina, he goes with one swampy area of Georgia. Guess the dude doesn't like mountains.

North Carolina is cute but Georgia is the superior state in my opinion. Neither one has especially remarkable food but Atlanta is the capital of the south and of Black America. I live in Georgia but I don't think I'm that biased. I was born in Birmingham and grew up in Chicago. I deliberately chose to move to Georgia over North Carolina because I felt it's a bit better. Charlotte has much lighter traffic than ATL though, which is a major benefit.

Marta in Atlanta while it needs MAJOR upgrades, expansion, and improvements (all coming BTW); is light years ahead of any public transportation system in Norrh Carolina. You are talking about one of the top ten transit systems in use in the U.S. with 4 heavy rail lines and the Atlanta streetcar light rail system. Charlotte Area Transit North Carolina's largest transit system has no heavy rail lines, and currently only one light rail line with the CATS Lynx Blue line running NE to SW through the city. There are ambitious plans for expansion for both systems. But Marta is working to expand both Heavy and Light rail throughout the metro area. While the ATL which is a regional transportation agency that Marta, Cobblinc (Cobb county's transit system), Gwinnett County Transit, and ATL Transit ( a regional commuter bus service) all are now organized under will provide solutions for transportation throughout the metro Atlanta area for expansion and improvements in rail and bus transportation like commuter rail and bus, along with alternative transportation solutions like bike trails and greenways. CATS Expansion while ambitious with the intention of not running into the same issues that Marta ran into through the 80's and early 90's will be roughly about the same size as the current Marta system with a proposed commuter rail line to Davidson. And CATS new lines outside of the Red line commuter line will all be light rail which means that they will carry less commuters per car, and can be built at grade and on surface streets. Not grade separated. Big difference than heavy rail.
@jackwier7327
@jackwier7327 3 жыл бұрын
XL XL dude I'm talking state wide, Georgia completely lacks any form of regional rail. Yes Atlanta has better transit than Charlotte buts it's also twice the size, in Georgia there are about 5 other transit agencies outside of Atlanta.
@xlxl9440
@xlxl9440 3 жыл бұрын
@@jackwier7327 yes, I know. The ATL is working on solutions for regional commuter rail solutions for the future. Thing is unfortunately is that Georgia has had a huge NIMBY problem. This has prevented the expansion of Marta, and the development of regional rail in the past. That is slowly changing now. What I do find fascinating and encouraging is that there is serious talks of high speed rail that will link Charlotte and Atlanta, and an Amtrak line that will link Atlanta to Nashville. There's also discussions about a possible high speed rail line that will run from Atlanta through Savannah, and into Florida. It would be nice to see these potential projects come to fruition.

North Georgia is in the Appalachian region and is very similar to the rest of southern Appalachia in terms of scenery. It has many of what we call “mountains” in the east as well as waterfalls. Mt. Mitchell in western North Carolina is the highest point in the Appalachian mountain range. It is about an hour away from north east Georgia. The middle part of North Ga is home to a section of the Blue Ridge mountains as well.

Brett Goss, you’re biased because you probably live in Georgia! NC’s Mount Mitchell is the tallest peak east of the Mississippi River, so we win in the mountain category ⛰. Beach wise, NC’s got a much longer coastline, and a good percentage of the barrier islands on the Outer Banks are undeveloped, so you’re bound to find private beach time. Also, NC is special. I’m not saying that just because I live here. Look up pictures of Biltmore - a magnificent mansion in the mountain region of NC. If u want to live in the country then there’s the coast plains or in the center of the state. While, and I’m not trying to sound rude, really I’m not, Atlanta is carrying the state and is the only city most people think of, and it looks like the rest is just woods and forests. While the triangle and some eastern cities like Greenville, Fayetteville, Asheville and Raleigh are growing in economy and population.

No comparison at all. The most visited national park in the U.S. is Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddling North Carolina and Tennessee. The highest peak in Georgia is only 4,784. North Carolina's highest peak, Mount Michell, is nearly 2,000 feet higher. It's the highest peak in the eastern U.S. There are literally many dozens of mountain peaks in N.C. that rise higher than Georgia's highest. Trying to compare the two states in terms of mountains is folly.

Awesome! I kind of predicted you would pick Georgia. Like you said Atlanta is just a world class cosmopolitan city that a wider range of career possibilities and amenities than NC can offer. And if you are a lover of all types of music (I am) then its better. And it seems on average even the smaller cities have more going on there average as well than the NC counterparts. And if you find swamps fascinating - then another additional pro there. Though if you have a career in finance or research and development, North Carolina is better, you love the hippy-artsy mountain towns similar to what you find out west like Boulder, CO or Eugene, OR then Asheville is better. Also if you are a foodie and have an interest in southern cuisine sounds like NC is better as well. And if you want to experience the most wild solitudinous beaches on the east coast as well. Can we even go a step further and say if you are bit more of a city person - go with Georgia, and if you see cities more as a base where your career is, and you prefer to spend weekends in the great outdoors - go with North Carolina.

While true, NC college basketball championships do beat GA football championships, I believe it’s worth noting the claimed football national titles held by four different colleges. UGA has two 1942 & 1980. GT has four 1917, 1928, 1952, 1990. Then two lower division schools Valdosta State has four Division II championships 2004, 2007, 2012, 2018 and Georgia Southern has six FCS championships 1985, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1999, 2000.

@XDrang93 3 жыл бұрын
NC's basketball championships carries more weight than the other sports NC has to offer. He didn't count the lesser conferences. If he did, then we would see some more NC-based schools on the list. Appalachian State (for example) had a three-peat in FCS football in the mid-aughts. As for GA, the 1942 championship is disputed with Ohio State because they ended up number 1 on the AP poll, but UGA has a more solid claim. Granted they both lost one game during the season, but UGA actually went to play in a bowl game and OSU didn't. UGA player Frank Sinkwich ended up winning the Heisman that year. Speaking of Heisman, he was coaching GT back in 1917, but people best remember his tenure for the insanely lopsided victory over Cumberland from the year before.

I'm not surprised by the disrespect for Macon. But things have and are changing. Here is my response to one post: Why would you be surprised about picking Macon over the Triad? When was the last time you actually stopped (instead of driving through) and explored all that Macon has to offer? Beautiful downtown (restaurants, museums, art galleries, festivals)...great architecture...history around every corner (American Indian, War of 1812, Civil War, Civil Rights)...music everywhere (Otis Redding, Little Richard, Allman Brothers, Lena Horne, Jason Aldean...and live music all the time downtown)...totally surrounded by nature (Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park is about to become Georgia's first actual National Park)...and all in a much more compact area. Macon has been featured in many national and international travel magazines lately...and there's a reason for that.

Coming from someone who moved to NC, the 2 Carolinas almost feel and act like one big state, a lot of people from other places think we have a huge serious rivalry which is only partly true, but it’s more like a sibling rivalry. We show much respect for one another. We always go back and forth across the border for many things, I can go down to SC for buying fireworks, and SC comes to us for the college sports and bigger city life. It’s tough to tell if the Carolinas “hate” any states, it depends. We all have our ups and downs with different places. Their definitely up there with my favorite states!

I lived in Augusta GA for about two years back in the late 80s. I hope for its sake that it has made strides since then, but at the time it seemed to combine the worst elements of a small town and a big city, including small-town views and outlooks of the people (coupled with pretentious golf snobbery) and a fair amount of crime and urban blight. I got out of there as soon as I could, and I have never been back.

I love Asheville and its music scene and its breweries, but Athens, GA has a bigger and better overall alternative rock music scene and brewery scene. Athens was "hipster" before other cities in the South. Heck, the indie culture coming out of Athens inspired a whole generation of musicians including Nirvana. There's even a book called "Cool Town: How Athens, Georgia, Launched Alternative Music and Changed American Culture". The university is much bigger in Athens so a much bigger student population and a lot more activities going on. Having said that, the proximity to mountains alone gives Asheville a lot of extra points.

I stopped at the beginning of the Atlanta part. There is no traffic at 3 AM. Ever. The traffic is horrendous for sure, but it's quite predictable. It's during rush hour, when people travel to and from work. I drove up to Gwinnett from Buckhead today at 7 PM, and it was fine, Also, you start talking about Midtown, and you show pictures of Little Five Points, in East Atlanta. Just to add a little something for the sports of each state, not that anyone cares of this one apparently. But, Both North Carolina and Georgia, each have a NASCAR track, that the NASCAR Cup series (the top tier series, along with the second and third tier series). One being "Charlotte Motor Speedway" in North Carolina, an 1.5 mile asphalt quad oval, where is also the same city that the hall of fame of NASCAR is located and is considered to be the "home track" for NASCAR itself, considering most to a vast majority of race team headquarters are based around or near the Charlotte area, or at least in the state of North Carolina. Which also hosts a crown jewel of the "Coca Cola 600", which is the longest race of the NASCAR season. Not to mention in North Carolina gave NASCAR some great notable names, many hall of famers, a lot of them legends, such as: Seven time series champion; Dale Earnhardt, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Harry Gant, "The King" Richard Petty and his Petty family, Buck and Buddy Baker, Ned Jarrett, Junior Johnson, Richard Childress, and many many others. While Georgia has "Atlanta Motor Speedway", another 1.5 mile asphalt oval. Which currently is notably known for it's abrasive surface (meaning tires wear much quicker than on most other tracks) , due to aging asphalt. The track was once held as a championship race, before a much newer track called "Homestead-Miami Speedway" down in... well Homestead, Florida. But the track also has memorable moments, such as Dale Earnhardt, edging a bumper past Bobby Labonte for the win, and for it to be repeated a week after Dale's tragic death in Daytona, where Dale's car and team, which now is the 29 drove by rookie Kevin Harvick edged a bumper past Jeff Gordon for the win. Georgia has also gave a fair share of most notable names, both active drivers, hall famers, and legends such as; Bill Elliot, 2020 NASCAR Cup champion; Chase Elliot, Tim Flock, Ken Ragan, Jack Smith, Fonty Flock, Frank Mundy, and several more names! If NASCAR would've been included in the sports category, the scoring wouldn't change, considering North Carolina is the home, and birthed out many upon many great NASCAR drivers, both active, hall of fame, legends. Not to mention North Carolina is literally NASCAR's "Home state", with more drivers from that state having at least one title under their belt, than Georgia.
