North Cliffs Failure - Amazing Cliff Collapse caught on Camera!

Active Coastal Erosion in Cornwall. See 'North Cliffs 3hrs Later' video on my channel also. Very lucky to witness 1000's of tonnes of rock falling into the Atlantic!
Thanks for all of your positive comments, sorry I can't reply to them all individually. Hopefully I can answer most of the FAQ's now....
The failure occurred at about 5pm on Friday 23rd September 2011. It took place on the North Coast of Cornwall. There were only a few people watching, with about the same number of inquisitive seals in the water! There were lots of 'small' failures just before the main event. This appears to be a progressive failure, the frequency and size of the smaller failures increased until the inevitable happened. The sound was incredible, those cliffs are about 150-200ft high. I'd been chatting to the couple mentioned in the clip only a few minutes before the footage was taken. They can just be seen walking away in the distance; the path had been fenced off and diverted, so they were quite safe. An amazing sight, and credit to R who took the video, I still can't stop revisiting it! Thanks again for all the comments, who says Geology isn't an exciting subject?!. Oh, & finally..... I'm happy to report that no seals or humans were hurt in the filming of this clip! ACSM(93)

Always amazes me that people walk along beaches close to the bottom of cliffs. If you grow up in such areas you never do that as you have seen these rockfalls so much. People are injured and killed quite regularly along coasts like North Yorkshire because they ignore this. The video is a reminder of how unstable eroded cliffs are.

About 4 decades ago I was on holiday in Cornwall. Every morning I walked my Irish Wolfhound on the cliff path. At the start of my second week about 50 yards of the cliff path vanished. It's a little unnerving that it collapsed on a clear sunny day, due to heat expansion of rocks I guess. You more often see rockfalls like this during heavy rainstorms. I live ne4ar collapsing cliffs here on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

I was on a ferry sailing to Cork in Ireland on the night when a hurricane was battering the British Isles. The ship was swaying from side to side so much we would have been thrown off our bunks so we sat on the floor with our feet braced against the opposite wall. My 'helpful' friend chose that moment to point out that we were on the same type of ferry as had sank at Zeebrugge!

A spate of freezing and thawing can lead to this kind of rockface cracking and sliding. And any vibrations, such as from a pump, generator or heavy traffic, will do a lot to get a nearby rockface or pit edge ready to crumble.

Loni Carr They scream because they're not women. They're still little girls inside their bodies. You see little girls, and boys, screaming at playgrounds, kindergartens, shopping places, etc. Their equally stupid parents, mostly mothers, never bothered about those unnecessary screaming in public places. They think it's okay to allow them to scream, much to the annoyance of other people around, and more annoying to people who wear hearing aids that suddenly amplify the scream sound 10 folds. I see such girls on such places screaming their heads off, brats that demand all the attention they want, turning strangers heads When I was a child I still remember my mum giving me a few whack on the bottom if I ever screamed for nothing. And, in shopping centers, no running around either, or touching the merchandise in shops. What do mothers (or parents) of today's kids do? Do I need to tell you when it's evident enough that brats are everywhere in such places and parents dont ever give a f**** where their children are or the possibility of being grabbed by predators, kidnappers or strangers, but they seem to be obsessed of the safety and whereabouts of their kids at other time, such as during school days that they are dropping and picking up their brats from schools when they have legs to walk, like when we were kids and had to find our way to go to school, come rain hail or shine. Women are so paranoid when it comes to kids and schools. They think someone will harm them, ha! In my school days parents told us never talk to strangers and never accept lollies from them, plus showing us what would have happened if we did talk, if we did take lollies, if we did give strangers street directions, in fact anything that predators and kidnappers would do to kids. But then, do mother do that to kids these days? Nah, theyre too busy distancing themselves from kids, allowing them out of sight, too busy worrying about when the next sex encounter will happen. Such distractions are the reasons why today's little girls are what they will become in their future, a ho-ha pathetic screamers who have no idea wtf are they screaming about because nobody ticked them off as a child, nobody told these kids the story about the boy who cried wolf, to scream only when in danger and never for the fun of things, never. But then, it's the pathetic society of these days, of having kids and not knowing how to raise them. So different to my days.
